  • this is the first time i heard this and this is so fucking hot!

  • Hey SWA2011......r u a player ??? Let's come up w/ our own "Maggot Brain" chords....... Just fooling round w/ the guitar the other nite i came across some pretty good chords now i can't remember them....LOL it was a Dm to F to something but i'm gonna jamm again and they'll come back........Hopefully LOL

  • REST IN PEACE MY BROTHER.

  • When they asked Hendrix who do u think is the best player in the world, jimmy responds "Ask Manolis Hiotis". Hiotis was one of the best bouzouki players. Although different era and organ its unbelievable how clear were the notes. He added strings and convert bouzouki to electric. If u want, check modern bouzouki players e.g.Karantinis:

    watch?NR=1&v=DDpcuGT7jsc

    watch?v=5NjXgQ0SlMc

Please be patient and try to listen the whole solo performances

  • @dimogeo

The first link is one of the most famous instrumentals of the modern greek music. It's called "To zeimpekiko tis Evdokias" . Try to listen a remix of this song especially after 1'.30''. and feel the passion of our greek music. If you don't know how to dance it doesn't matter. I know it's different music style but i hope you would like this music as well. I post this video to check some strings players around the world. This is greek music

  • @dimogeo Greek Van Halen. especially the last part of the song you can light a cigar on the strings watch?NR=1&v=DDpcuGT7jsc

  • @dimogeo the way I have heard this story told was the following: Jimi Hendrix was asked by a reporter how it feels to be the greatest guitarist in the world. Jimi responded with "I don't know, ask Phil Keaggy" not saying you're wrong but that's just the way i've heard the story.

  • damn man I love this, does anyone know any more like his and maggot brain, slow with guitar

  • @chaosstarr Check out "Good thoughts bad thoughts" and "From the bottom of my soul"

  • @MaggotBrain123 thanks brother, i checked em out

  • Swimming not only downstream, but ahead of the current. We were lucky to have him share his tallents for as long as we did. RIP, Mr. Hazel.

  • Eddie Hazel for ever...

    Rest in peace Eddie...

  • Play this at my funeral~

It's a pity that he is unknown and so underrated guitarist to the most of us. To play good music doesn't mean play quick or loud like VanHalen. Here the music "speaks" directly to our hearts. Especially the part between 3:10-4:10 is so dark, spooky and touching...

  • @dimogeo the whole disc is also marvelous. Although it s not under the label of P-Funk, all these artists have given their best on this disc. I think that this album was released on a wrong era. If it wasn't 90s and were late sixties now everyone would rank this together with maggot brain and other hits. In my opinion this track is the best song in this album.

  • I cant believe that there isn't any covers of this song! Can someone tab this. I'm new at guitar and i have tried already!

  • @TheSWA2011 its a problem with this type of songs because hes playing from his heart and there are so many little detalis so tabbing this will be diffecult, but I can try tabbing the melody or to get the chords for the melody.

  • @Amkies that would be awesome! thank you!!!

  • @TheSWA2011 I will try to and if ill make it I will contect you

  • @Amkies Thnak You!!!!!!!

  • @TheSWA2011 So i got something try it and let me know if its right.

the Intro wich is actually the main riff is:Em,Bm,D,Am.

    and this brake is:Fm#,G Major.

You will notice by ear wich part belongs to where.

Thats it my friend I hope its good for enough for you! if it does have some fun playing!

  • @Amkies Thanks man! Can't wait to try it out!!

  • Can anyone post the version with the Last Poets doing spoken word to this track? I had the cd but unfortunately, when I sent it home with hundreds of others on my way back to the states from Japan, it never showed up. And like a fool, i didn't get it insured. If anyone can do that, really would be cool. Thanks...

  • @psykomystro

With the lyrics it is called "Sacred to the pain". You'll find it easily on YT.

  • Eddie Hazel was a sideman, an ensemble player. He didn't need the attention that a Superstar needs...and he was world famous, having played with the P-Funk mob for 25 years plus was over at Motown as a studio musician. Hendrix was an expatriate, Hazel played strictly for Black audiences in those years. Most whites, Euros included, weren,t ready for the Funk.

  • @TheToocold I'm sorry I have to correct you. When I saw Funkadelic in 1968, they played mostly to white audiences, lots of college gigs. If Eddie heard you say this about him, he'd laugh in your face. Race was never an issue with him. Ever. Black audiences didn't come around until late 1969. This was "the Devil's music" and wasn't accepted in the Black communities. I was with him a lot in the beginning. I'm white, and female, too.

  • @funkedbyinjection Devil"s music applied to the Blues, among Holy Sanctified people in the south; particularly the augmented ninth chord. Also banned by cappelmiesters in Europe in the 14th century. I was referring to the fact that funk was Black music in those days I was on the road with a funk band in 1968 and also played Cream and Vanilla Fudge covers. Race ai'nt an issue with me , either. I am Black and male. I don't recall seeing whites at the Apollo or the Capital in'69 at The Shows.

  • @TheToocold I'm speaking of the Great Lakes area; Detroit, Cleveland, etc. I have never been to NYC, nor have I ever wanted to go there, so I cannot answer to your remark about not seeing whites at the Apollo or the Capital in '69. I only know what I know. I lived in a city that would have been known as part of the Chitlin' Circuit and we saw lots of Black entertainers before the rest of the world saw them. As in Funkadelic.

  • Damn people, don't underestimate Mr. Hendrix! In my eyes, he and Eddie were on the same level.

  • I am soooo stoned right now, and just listened to maggot brain for the umteenth time, and now this!!! It is like i am able to see Eddie's soul though the sound of his music. So no matter if his body is no longer here, all you have to do is listen to him play, and there you will find him...

  • R.I.P legend

  • Stop arguing about who's better. Hendrix, Hazel, Page, Gilmour ... They are all exquisit and incredible. Start enjoying music.

  • Jimi, received attention because he left the US, for the UK, if he had stayed ,he would have remain unknown. I firmly believe, if Eddie had left too a SUPERSTAR, he would be. Europe appreciates talented people from the US, RIP Jimi and Eddie, SUPERSTARS !

  • Not to talk shit about Mr. Hendrix but I wanna know why he got so much attention, when Eddie is clearly more talented than him and barely no body knows about him.

  • Listening to Eddie Hazel convinces me I was born too late. He was beautiful. Just so beautiful.

  • EVERYTIME I HEAR EDDIE HAZEL,P WISH I HAD 3 EARS.

  • If you want irrefutable truth, find and blast "Super Stupid."

  • edited parts of this solo also feature on 1994's Axiom Ambient album...

  • sounds like a blend between "Atmosphere" (Let's Take it to the Stage, 1975, Funkadelic) and "Maggot Brain" (Maggot Brain, 1971, Funkadelic) damn- where was I when this came out in '95? wow

  • Eddie was my neighbor and my friend, truly a kind and gifted soul.

  • Eddie was one of the greatest guitarists to ever walk on this sweet swingin' sphere! this is a song I want played at my funeral/memorial/whatever they decide to do w/ me!

  • That is SOULFUL electric guitar playing - Not showing off technique -which a lot of metal guys do.The thing that kills good music every single time regardless of genre is when musicians (almost always blokes) make music to impress other musicians(almost always other blokes!).

  • I am now a FAN!! Sure I have heard and listened to a little Parliment and Funkadelic but never really listened. Eddie Hazel is great..

  • this has so much soul.eddie will always be ridin wit me.

  • gushing soul

  • this shit is haunting because its soulful;its black its deep its gut and grime and struggle...thats why its soo dayum soulful that why if feel this though your soul..and if you dont feel it there--then you cant feel,,,music-you simply listen to it..

  • I REALLY TRY NOT TO COMPARE-BUT EDDIE WAS A GREAT PLAYER(HAZEL)..AND WAS AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER THAN THE OTHER EDDIE..MEANING-THERE WERE BLACK GUITAR PLAYERS OUT THERE KICKING AZZ BUT DIDNT GET THE "ROCK" RECOGNITION THEY DESERVED...IF YOU KNOW MUSIC YOU KNOW WHY---WE DIDNT MAKE 'RACE RECORDS' BROTHER MADE MUSIC AND IT WAS SOULFUL AND ROCK..it was not always fuck or funk soul it was rock -but the word rock referred to 'white' at times...mainly if this aitn rock what is it...:O)

  • @TheTayedrums--Yes!

  • yea thoses dudes make playing easy, i like how paul and guthrie play. its hard for me to play a Gadd9 chord. lol so i have lots of respect for them. any song suggestions?

  • i just started to play guitar and all i knew was jimi hendrix, slash, jeff beck, jimmy page as the best guitarist ever. till i heard funkadilc maggot brain by accident. i just fell in love with da song. man it blew my mind. now i heard this song and from 'the bottom of my soul" eddie instantly became my fav guitarist but im not gonna say he is da best cuz like eddie i never heard of him till today. makes me wonder who else is out there. i wish i can sound like eddie when i play tho.

  • @DaBallinOne

You should check out.. Buckethead, Shawn Lane, Paul Gilbert & Guthrie Govan... In my opiion these 4 and of course Eddie and Jimi are the best guitarist ever.

  • @LolliTeam On a much lower technical level John Frusciante is one of the most prolific, creative and soulful guitarrists and musicians of all times, both in RHCP and ofc solo.

  • @000theUnforgiven000

    Try Buckethead ;)

  • I would only dare compare this man to Hendrix and no other.

  • maggot brains a great song,, unique sound, i love it, but get real,, it's one song..how can it compare to a cataloge like jimmy pages,, lets see eddie hazel play white summer, or five finger pick "'babe im gonna leave you'" onna 12 string. what about les paul,, or chet atkins,,or eddie van halen in his hey-daythe BEST is a mighty big word

  • @mrmikegibbons Don't confuse art with technical abilities. Let's see Eddie Van Halen Portray and emotion like Hazel does in this song!! Wouldn't ever happen

  • @rocknrollhoochiekoo1 Damn straight. Hazel's ability to convey his heart through his songs completely blows Van Halen out of the water.

  • @mrmikegibbons

I love Led Zep but I now have the opinion that Jimmy Page is a total plagiarist. White summer is a note for note rip off from Davy Graham "She moves through the fair" & Bert Jansch "Blackwaterside". Babe I'm gonna leave you rip off from Joan Baez and written by Ann Bredon. Dazed and confused - Jake Holmes. Since I've been loving you - Moby Grape "Never". He is a great guitarist but these are not his songs. There are many more.Stairway to Heaven - intro to "Taurus" by Spirit.

  • Man if i had enough tears to cry for Eddie i would ! That was just to deep PRAY FOR MY SOUL! Next level guitarist!

  • Man Eddie was a god!

  • Rest in peace Eddie.

  • YES!!!

    A Funky Space Reincarnation.

  • aside from his great playing, the fact that he used his mums name so she got just skyrocketedmy opinion of him as a human being. thats beautiful.

  • This man was literally ignored by white radio. I'm just now discovering him because of YOUTUBE. I grew up on Jimi and bands like Deep Purple, Carlos Santana and the like. Jimi said he wanted to get between the notes, sounds like Eddie and Jimi were on the same planet together. This is really excellent music.

  • my grandmother played the blues for me when i was a kid. she would say " sing your soul!" this man right here, is playing his soul and exposing it for all of us. i want a time machine so i can listen to him live soak in his spirit. i am 38 years old and i rediscovered love of music listening to a brother who passed play guitar. i know there is a guy or gal somewhere playing their axe who will never be understood in this time. i hope i find them!

  • Eddie Hazel was such a God !

  • I know this might sound blasphemous to loyal Parliament/Funkadelic disciples but I like Hazel's playing and tone better here than the monumental Maggot Brain. The edge of the tone is more abrasive (does anyone know where to look for FX pedals he used!?) and his improvisational attack is really focused and aggressive.

,... well, maybe not 'blasphemous' ,...more like "blisphemous" !!!!!!!LOL

    GREAT SOLO.

thanx for posting this historic recording.

  • @1Delta not blasphemous because they are both played by divine fingers, like two emotional revelations from the demi-god that is hazel

    REST IN P

  • @1Delta Eddie first did Maggot Brain when he was 19. It was first recorded when he was 20. This song was done just before he died. He will always be my favorite, from beginning to end. An amazing guitarist and an amazing man.

  • @1Delta--No blasphemy, this has a cleaner sound, may I add a bit more technical, very Souldriven, mad Funky, and as you say "his improvisational attack is really focused and aggressive". Pray my Soul & Sacred to the Heart aka Pray my Soul pt 2, just 2 great songs. May the man known as Eddie "Maggot Brain" Hazel rest in P

  • To me this is perfect rival to Maggot Brain.

  • @kuowintak not rival but complimentary

  • @kuowintak not a rival but more like an encore

  • Uncle Fuzzy { Black Mist } miss you

  • I cried listening to this. It's beautiful for me to handle...

  • my face just got teared apart.

  • Eddie Hazel hace hablar a las guitarras...

  • BRILLIANT!!!!! Heaven must sound like this.

  • Right on.

  • What an absolutely elegiac piece. I'm an absolute dyed-in-the-wool Hendrix/Radiohead freak, but this leaves me in awe... such tristesse and majesty in one performance.

  • Eddie Hazel came over to one of our session, I was on drums,

I heard and watched him play, he played like a miracle.

RIP Eddie Hazel one of the best.

  • @michaelustanford when did he die?

  • @snuffying Dec.1992

  • @snuffying Dec.1992

  • I think Eddie Hazel had his own style but was compared to jimi.Eddie was great in his own way.R.I.P Eddie and Jimi.

  • The sweet sound of analog pure and sweet..Digital sucks

  • @pypower Amen to that!!

  • @pypower You know he was plugged into a Zoom pedal.. digital haha. It is all in the fingers

  • nice ! ですね.

  • shit makes me cry

  • The sad fact is blk folks never give their own people the love and respect they deserve. To many times it takes others to appreciate what great talent we have.

  • @Screamingdk--(Part 1) I agree. We have Been typecast into this pidgeonhole, that we can only do "rap" music. OK, Blues(called "ugly"), Ragtime(called "unmusical"), Jazz and all its branches(called "jungle music"), R&B(called "race music" before Sam Philips of Sun Records said he wanted to find a white man "with a negro sound, & a negro feel" to his music. He found Elvis), Rock 'n' Roll(called "a fad"), Soul(called "a fad"), Funk(called "greasy, unwanted black music"), Hip Hop(called "a fad")

  • @Screamingdk-- (Part 2) Sure, I love Clapton & Beck, etc. they tried to fuse this new Rock n Roll with Blues sensibilities, plus the guitar craze of the '60's in the U.K., yes great guitarists. Funkadelic didn't have to try, they came from the pain, the injustice, the poverty, it was a natural thing to pick up those instruments & produce those sounds.

  • @JaimeOctober Really? you think a man plays guitar like this because he experienced poverty and pain? Actually, it's not "natural" to play this brilliantly. It's is incredibly rare, and uncommon. Eddie Hazel was a genius, child. Poverty does not produce this. I wish I knew what did. Shoot, if all it too was suffering, the whole dang world would play like this-- and uh -they don't. Stop romanticizing things you don't know anything about, please. Respect great artists Be humble, not dumb.

  • @elsaturnresearch Nicely Put - Eddie was from what I have read Middle Class

  • @elsaturnresearch I'm glad some people think the same as me about Eddie Hazel

  • thank you for posting!!

  • eddie hazel the most underrated guitarist ever !

  • @frankiman Fuck that !, we know. this music is too real for the mainstream , their brains can't figure this out. they just hear noise we hear notes. and i think eddie must be watching us all and see that he reached the audience he wanted. they who can't hear the calling are tonedeaf and prefer simple music as gaga bieber spears madonna and so on : who never played an instrument or sang a song live without false notes. they even can't kiss the feet of eddie , but that's oke , because we know !!!

  • @Reezer83 Testify my Brother!!! As a musician, I wouldn't want most people to be into my stuff because that means they don't get it. I'd much rather have people who know what they are listening to dig it. Eddie is one of my all time heros and I don't even deserve to kiss his feet.

  • @frankiman YOU SAID IT.....Every time I heard Eddie, I imagine that this is what heaven sounds like.

  • @frankiman UBETTABELIEVEIT !!!

  • @frankiman That's maybe because he died so young...damn shame!

  • I feel ashamed that I've never heard Eddie Hazel before. All those wasted hours learning Hendrix and Page.

  • @vikingjarl hazel, hendrix, kessel, reinhardt, marc ribot, paco pena...true guitar masters

  • @vikingjarl You don't waste hours learning Hendrix. The dude is the master.

  • @vikingjarl Me too, when I discoverd Funkadelic and Hazel, Page seemed like a beginner!

  • @vikingjarl those Jimi(mys) are just as good.

  • @vikingjarl Hendrix is still better than Hazel. However, Hazel completely owns Page. There's no such thing as wasted hours learning Hendrix.

  • @metalliczombie dude no. how can you say one is better than the other. like in your opinion yes i guess hazel owns page but seriously page hendrix and hazel they really cant be compared even if they are in the same general are of music. theyre still way different and have theyre own quirks about them.

  • @St0n3rTurd Hendrix and Hazel are comparable but Page is terrible. He's even worse live. At least Hendrix and Hazel didn't have to steal old blues musicians originals and say they were their own songs.

  • @metalliczombie seriously. Hendrix and Hazel cant even be compared to each other. and as for page doing that. yeah that wasn't right. still doesn't take away from how talented the man is.

  • @St0n3rTurd It certainly takes away from his songwriting abilities. Great artists don't plagiarize. And I hope you're not suggesting that Hazel is better than Hendrix because that would be ridiculous.

  • @metalliczombie--He or she doesnt have to, but I will. The reasons why I believe Hazel is better than Hendrix is 2 simple reasons: 1) Everything Jimi Tried to do (from using the feedback distortion as part of the music, the efeects, etc.) Hazel Did it. 2) Jimi died early in his career, leaving Hazel to be able to surpass Hendrix by time "Game, Dames & Guitar Thangs" came out in '77. Yet, Hazel has stated Hendrix was an influence to how he played.

  • @JaimeOctober He didn't "try" to do it, he did do it. He also did it first. I don't know what you mean by "he was able to surpass Hendrix" in '77. I have about 750 Hendrix songs, and that was in about 3.5 years time. I only have a grand total of like 50 songs that Hazel actually wrote.

  • @metalliczombie--Yes, I mean Try, it Isn't the best, but If you were actually there listening, or at the very least, envision yourself in that time frame, all of the political turmoil, the new movement of the youth, the dogma of the past, getting past the cold war, but now going to war with Vietnam, Jimi, at first, not being Commercially accepted, etc. etc. His stuff sounded amazing, groundbreaking. It Was the best. By the '70's, using the distortion feedback as music was commonplace.. (cont).

  • @JaimeOctober That's why he basically invented funk rock with the Band of Gypsys album. Then he was moving into jazz before he died. He was getting bored with all of the theatrics people wanted him to do and playing the same old songs. He was changing and then in the middle of it, he died. He did all of that in about 4 years which is incredible.

  • @metalliczombie--He didn't do it first either. An earlier account is Johnny "Guitar" Watson. He did it since the late '50's, early '60's. At one point in his life, he had stated that Jimi and everyone should be citing him as the first guitarist to ever "properly" use distortion feedback as part of the music, not just undesirable background noise. Still, in the end, its all Just my opinion.

  • @metalliczombie Eddie wrote over 70 songs. some of the best are in his mother's name, Grace Cook.

  • @JaimeOctober watch Buddy Guy - Money live at Festival express 1970 you will see why Jimi cancelled a show to follow Buddy around with a tape recorder. There are a lot of Jimi's (stevie ray , Santana Clapton) there's one Buddy end of discussion. lol

  • @vikingjarl those hours were most definitely not wasted! cmon man hendrix and page will never be a waste. not saying hazel isnt important but idk theres always time for more no matter how little time you have left.

  • @vikingjarl i have to differ..... those wernt wasted hours. im not saying eddie hazel isnt brilliant of course!

  • @vikingjarl true this this chap is good but saying you wasted hours learning hendrix and page?!!!!why don't you buy a rope and hang yourself

  • Love Eddie's fluid guitar tone......great find!

  • I JUST LOVE EDDIE HAZEL.... IF YOU HAVE PLAYED ONE NOTE ON THE GUITAR YOU KNOW HOW SPECIAL HE IS

  • He was my daddy's bestfriend. We were close and yes I referred to him as uncle. Great memories!!

  • @asistaatpeace you are truly blessed! I just don't understand how people could overlook this man with so much emotion that pour out of his playing. Pray My Soul is starting to effect me like "Maggot Brain" and I love his beautiful voice in "California Dreamin". Eddie was in a class all by himself and will always be "King Funkadelic".

  • Im in tesrs.........I love this man so much. Uncle Eddie, I miss you.

  • @asistaatpeace Sorry I meant tears......sorry everyone.

  • @asistaatpeace was he really your uncle? Wow!

  • This is tha killer bad azz stuff ..

  • something special !! thanx productionztimeless for sending me this video. Special things dont grow on trees , this share was a gift . Also thanx flailbot for such an amazing upload!!

  • this man should be way more given credit 4

    all the stuff he did

how come all these great people are dead?

eddie hazel, jimi hendrix, gary shider, 2pac, etc

  • @zonwuka yeah much similliar to roy buchanan , an under rated heaven sent talent!! 2pac was my first lyrical love , stoneroses my first musical/lyrical love , stevie vaughan my first guitar playing love , closely followed by roy buchanan and rory gallagher , the raw type , fucking love it!! why have all my favourite artists died young , thats the pits aint it???? peace to you n yours

  • Buckethead,Hazel,Hendrix:in that order for me.

  • why compare guitarist, each is an individual, just appreciate the music they make and spread the love

  • id have to agree!!!!

  • So beautiful

  • listen to little wing. then tell me hazel is better

  • @Kradoz I never ever heard of Eddie Hazel up untill yesterday (thanks to Santana and Buddy Guy who did Maggot Brain). I must admit, this cat is great! He reminds me so much of my man Jimi Hendrix, for real. Only one day of checking him out and I'm already a fan of his. That being said.. I don't think anyone, not anyone tops Jimi Hendrix. What Jimi did on guitar is miles ahead of any other guitarist!

  • That's just beautiful!

  • its tracks like this that make eddie my favorite guitarist of all time

  • hazel and hendrix had a lot in common

    hazel born 1950 died 1992

    hendrix born 1942 died 1970

hendrix dead at 27 hazel dead at 42

hazel released gdagt 7 years after hendrix's death hazel was 27

hendrix was born 7 years before hazel

if hendrix would have lived til 1992 he would have been 50 the year hazel died

  • eddie i love u so much and miss u more. your the reason i still try 2 play music. i know your listening . r.i.p. love kookie and aladocious

  • aahhhhh yeahh!!!

  • Where Can I buy this?

  • @redwinethegreat axiom funk you can find a cheap copy on amazon.

  • how many p-funk song references did i make in my last comment?

  • Hi im Mustang1834 and im addicted to Maggot Brain and Eddie Hazel. Ive been zapped with a bob gun by Dr Funkinstien. I was counselled by Sir Nose DeVoid of Funk , but even he cannot help me. They say the bigger the pill the bigger the headache. mine musta been a placebo.

  • thank you for sharing this video

  • proof that you need soul not speed to be a guitar god

  • I love the effect Eddie Hazel's playing has on people. I discovered him through Funkadelic when I was in high school and cant imagine music without him now, his influence is everywhere. Viva Hazel!

  • eddie and billy bass played on the first 2 commodores albums plus they played on 1990 by the temps, love machine by the miracles, I love you by lenny williams, plus billy bass played on car wash on the whole soundtrack .

  • link to download?

  • He definately taped into to the collective conscious. The same place Steve Vai, Eddy Van Helen, and Jimi Hendrix have been.

  • i guess im 1 of the 50. love this !!!

  • At the right momkent this is song can bring tears to ya eyes. Any artist that can provoke such a powerful feelin in their audience is truely an artist and worth paying money to see.

  • My God, that TONE!!! He wasn't plugged into an amplifier, he was plugged directly into his heart...

  • Im reading that maggot brain was on th tv show HOUSE. how can us HAZEL fans finally get him the attention he deserved so long ago? I say get a major company to use something of his in a TV ad. then people will be forced to hear him. comment ???
