@tab289:I can make you famous my dad work for animal planet, and he wanted me to look for dog trainers and you were the best one so far.I love your dog and you too!!!
you are teaching the dog to get the toy, but not to actually give it to you. Throwing the toy for the dog then the dogs bring it to you then dropping is something all dogs can do without training...its called playing....im sure this work if you do it a couple of times and the dog actually drop the toy in your hand, but you should really show a real "fetch" if you are going to make a clip about training fetch....
@tab289 yea im sure its easy to build on, but if you use this tactics on most dogs, its more likely that the dog wants to play with the toy instead of bring it to you. If your lucky you have a dog that thinks that candy is more important than a toy, but if you use this on a breed like a malinois, it wont bring it to you, it will play instead. Im sure this works on your dog, but in generall, in dont think this is the best way to teach a dog to fetch
@Celiica Wrong. I've tried to learn that to my dog for years. She still doesn't bring anything back (she preferes me to chase her with the toy in her mouth :P that might very well be our problem, it's just too much fun for her). If a dog offers that or not depends much on the breed, and of course on its individual character.
@testorki yea it always depends on the breed :P if the dog thinks its much more fun to play with the toy, it wont bring it to you for a pieace of candy :) i have 2 dog, 1 shepherd mix and 1 shiba, both of them know how to fetch, its just the right tactic for the right dog, some are more difficult, but im just saying if you do as he does in this video, its more likely that the dog will play with the toy instead of bring it to you

hi i have a 3 year old cockerspaniel called cookie andim really desprate to train her but if i throw a ball or anything to play fetch she gets it and doesnt give it back. please respond!
Thanks! This was great... I've tried to play fetch with my dog 1000 times. he runs after the toy but never brings it back...now i know where to start...
Just a question. When you have trained the dog.Do you still have to use the clicker or the food for reward every time???Or it comes anyway and a hug is enough??
But how do you train a dog to fetch if they're lazy and don't often engage in play or are fearful and are afraid or don't know how to engage in play with you?
Thank you so much for posting this video! Your technique is very simple for me to follow, unlike the expensive training class I put him in. My 3 year old doberman has never been interested in fetching, so it's harder for me to give him a good workout. We're doing the basics of the clicker and reward system and its working great! Hopefully he'll be fetching in no time. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
dude im having problem with my dog. i did what u did step by step but the problem is my dog gets the toy or the ball and sits and keeps chewing it and doesnt care about treats or anything can u plz help
step one took us weeks - i guess we can be proud we did it in the end (she didn't like to mouth anything). now she takes it sometimes only to drop it again. no chance of increasing the time she holds it. any tips?
Now you lost me. Using a clicker means giving the dog LOTS of treats to get used to the clicker. I NEVER use food to get my dog to do anything. He brings in the paper (he's too dangerous to go out alone). I tell him to 'get it' with his toys. Then I tell him 'get it' with the newspaper. Get excited and tell him he's my big boy when he does it. He's smart, do it daily. He does it because he likes the congrats. No food or treats needed.

Dude your dogs amazing.. ok so I have a lazy pug who dosent play with toys is there a way to get him interested we believe he's about two not completely sure cuz I rescued him but thanks for any help I really wanna teach him fetch
what treats do you reccomend? i have a yorkie and i use ceaser treats (the nickel sized one) but if i give him more than 5 treats a day he gets sick and poops a lot. What do you reccommend?
what do u do when the dog doesnt listen to u and doesnt bring the item back to u?? im hving trouble telling my dog to bring back the item i play fetch with...
Sorry for this odd request, but do you know how to teach a dog to "fetch" another dog? We have a puppy a little bit younger than a year in his prime, full of energy and eager to please; His brother is 12 years old and his hearing is going, It is extremely difficult to tell him to come back inside. We would like to teach our pup to get his old brother, know any ideas? thanks
I am trying to get my boeder collie to bring me a water, she wont even pick the water up,so my question is how can i get her to pick the object up so i can move on to the next step??She is very smart, she can lay, roll over, turn around, limp, craw, give paw,set pretty, but she cant fetch,It dont make sense..She wont pick up anything,I tryed a bone, nothing works..
Okay so I need a help... my german shepard... he kind of can fetch different things but the problem is he doesnt want to give it back even he know he will get food as reward(he is crazy for food).... he is putting in front of me what ever he is caring but when I try to pick it up from the ground he is just not letting me doing it and I have to fight with him in order to get the thing :(
if i want to teach my dog to play fetch and he doesn't get excited that much and he doesn't play with any toy also there is none toys that he like to play o.o
i wanna playwit my dog but i dunno what to play with him ..... :/
my dog runs after his ball when thrown, then when the ball hits the ground he'll pick it up and then put it back down., WTF? iv tried alot of shit,. nothing works
I am starting to train my dog with a clicker and it is very effective but I'd like to know if my dog will be able to obbey my commands if I stop using the clicker. Is there any point in this training method when you stop using the clicker?
@valtramen Definately worth it...the clicker is only to mark the EXACT moment when your dog is doing what you want. For example, if youre teaching sit, you click as soon as your dogs butt hits the ground. Once your dog knows what sit means and is able to do it easily, you don't need the clicker for that behavior anymore.
It would be nice if you would reply to these questions in line so we could ALL read the answers. I would like to know two of them, myself. Are you not replying to requests for clarification or assistance?
@jcrply Hello, and all in his Facebook page he said he prefer to use dog food, as myself does, so do it when the dog is hungry :), it is safer for the dog, less preservatives, however it is good that sometimes you use a higher value treat (real meat) specially when the difficulty of the training raises.. have a nice day :)
i don't really understand the clickers. if you click it the dog lets the toy go. do you have to teach the dog that if he hears the click he must let go of the toy, or is it a natural respons
@GoldenGhost42 it's a natural response, because the dog knows that he will get a treat when he hears the click, so he drops the toy so he can eat the treat.
This is such a clear instructional video. I started on this with my 10yo bitsa and I thought it would take me much longer as there is no way she is as smart as a German Sheppard. But she did really well in this first session!
Click training does work!!! Now. Jasper needs to learn how to beg or sit pretty or. Yeah...I call it sit up cause I'm teaching a different kind of beg.
ur dog is awesome!! im having trouble with my dobermann pup. shes very stubborn and gets bored easily, shes 4 months now. she barks at every noise she hears, idk how to stop it! i get mad and yell at her,i kno that isnt the best way,but i only can get her attention that way. also, does the Clicker work with all dogs?
what if my dog will not let go of the ball and snaps at the ball everytime i have the ball she snaps at my hand to get the ball she is also 2 we just got her so i dont know if age has anything to do with learning
Our labrador seemed to know how to fetch without being trained. Except that once she has the object and returns to me, instead of dropping the object, she wants to be chased. How can I get her to drop the object for another round instead of playing chase?
i got a problem with my dog: he always get sick of the treats i give him, and he refuse to eat any sort of dog treats!! i had to train him with cheese strings or cracker barrel cheese! and it is driving me crazy!!!
@EatCoffee I am a Las Vegas Chef. I know most smart dogs have good taste. I bake human quality "Whiff-Licks", all meat training treats. Many professional trainers and working dogs love them. when do you know when to stop using ur clicker...essentialy what i'm asking is how do you know the dog has fully grasped the concept and nolonger needs reward?
To all who don't understand why their dog has no interest in a toy or retrieving it: this is the first obstacle professional trainers overcome, watch a few videos to see what I mean. Many use excitement "noises" or sounds, run playfully around the pup, make eye contact, and try to find a food the dog can't resist. Some dogs will learn just for affection, others need a favorite variety of food for motivation. Just learn how to motivate your dog, and you're halfway done with any trick!
@the123kaylad This video explains the answer to this question very well, but to reiterate: Before you can even begin to train a dog to do anything you need 2 things. His/her attention, and a mild to high excitement level. Both can be challenging if you've done no prior training, but you can build excitement by frolicking, rapidly twirling the toy, and acting excited yourself. Before you EVER throw the toy, you need to convince your dog he/she wants the toy, or it isn't going to work.
@the123kaylad Continued... "Get it" will be totally 100% gibberish to your dog until you "train" him/her to understand. First, get him to want the toy. Second, once she's picking it up, get her to want to drop it for a treat. Only now can you throw the toy, but be sure to build excitement first. Now, when he naturally wants to run for it, say "get it", and teach a permanent cue. Finally, once she's running for it, back pedal excitedly, tell her to come, and give a treat for dropping it. Done!
@Dhesi24 Simply find something he likes more as a reward. This might sound a little silly, but think about it: While I prefer to use simple dog food as a reward, for the super hard stuff, why would dog food motivate my pup? What kind of trade is my fun toy for a piece of dog food? Personally, I would find a food he likes much better. A small piece of hot dog or ham is not going to kill him. Neither are 10 of them one after another, especially if it teaches him a new way to exercise. Good luck!
These are very helpful tips. Thanks!

This is such a clear instructional video. I started on this with my 10yo bitsa and I thought it would take me much longer as there is no way she is as smart as a German Sheppard. But she did really well in this first session!

i like the guide. And I'm glad I don't have a problem dog, but, this would be more helpful with an untrained dog.

Our labrador seemed to know how to fetch without being trained. Except that once she has the object and returns to me, instead of dropping the object, she wants to be chased. How can I get her to drop the object for another round instead of playing chase?

To all who don't understand why their dog has no interest in a toy or retrieving it: this is the first obstacle professional trainers overcome, watch a few videos to see what I mean. Many use excitement "noises" or sounds, run playfully around the pup, make eye contact, and try to find a food the dog can't resist. Some dogs will learn just for affection, others need a favorite variety of food for motivation. Just learn how to motivate your dog, and you're halfway done with any trick!

whenever i tell my dog to "get it" she lies down. any tips?
the123kaylad 8 months ago
@the123kaylad This video explains the answer to this question very well, but to reiterate: Before you can even begin to train a dog to do anything you need 2 things. His/her attention, and a mild to high excitement level. Both can be challenging if you've done no prior training, but you can build excitement by frolicking, rapidly twirling the toy, and acting excited yourself. Before you EVER throw the toy, you need to convince your dog he/she wants the toy, or it isn't going to work.
mikeyk57 8 months ago
@the123kaylad Continued... "Get it" will be totally 100% gibberish to your dog until you "train" him/her to understand. First, get him to want the toy. Second, once she's picking it up, get her to want to drop it for a treat. Only now can you throw the toy, but be sure to build excitement first. Now, when he naturally wants to run for it, say "get it", and teach a permanent cue. Finally, once she's running for it, back pedal excitedly, tell her to come, and give a treat for dropping it. Done!

@the123kaylad
probably because you're pointing downwards at the toy, and lots of people use the point to the ground technique as the symbol for lay down. Post

my dog grabs the ball and runs away plus he likes the ball more than the food
HELP
Dhesi24 9 months ago
@Dhesi24 Simply find something he likes more as a reward. This might sound a little silly, but think about it: While I prefer to use simple dog food as a reward, for the super hard stuff, why would dog food motivate my pup? What kind of trade is my fun toy for a piece of dog food? Personally, I would find a food he likes much better. A small piece of hot dog or ham is not going to kill him. Neither are 10 of them one after another, especially if it teaches him a new way to exercise. Good luck!
