@JGVETTGUY Oh no...just watch SRV play this live. He's not even in Setzer's zip code. SRV is a thing, but Setzer is the greatest all-around guitar player ever. It's no contest.
Love SRV, Love Brian Setzer. Fabulous!! Brian is one of those guys that can cover anything and make it his, and make it rock! He has no musical snobbery, and a huge musical knowledge. Have you checked out the "classical" BSO album "Wolfgangs Big Night Out"?
I salute Setzer for growing as a musician, but sometimes jazzing something up can sound a little self-indulgent and schmaltzy. There's no right or wrong here, it's just about personal taste.
Overall, Brian's done a whole lot of good by painlessly re-educating lots of people to great Americana Music, from low-rent, raw, Stray Cats all the way up to the big band. I respect and dig the guy's work - this particular tune just seems a bit loaded-down and too glitzy with all the bling .
@pyannaguy this is not the best sounding recording, perhaps it's my PC but,Brian Setzer can play this song as good as SRV(steveie ray vaughn) who I love and saw in concert one month b4 his death
@Syzygy60 I think SRV and Brian are like emeralds and rubies - both brilliant. But, SRV was first and foremost a blazing Texas Blues guy. Setzer, though, can go deep into sophisticated Jazz territory; he WRITES the horn charts for his big band (I've been told). In other words, they're both excellent artists, but Setzer goes wider, musically.
I'm not claiming expert status, but I know the nuts-and-bolts of music - I was a pro for 30 years (all good players don't get rich and famous). Peace...
@Syzygy60 Thanks for "explaining" why we play - to a lifelong, working musician. I've done nothing but praise Brian Setzer, here. I simply expressed my opinion (not the only one of its kind, here), that THIS particular arrangement didn't work so well for me. Opinions aren't right or wrong - only facts can be true or not.
Now, why don't you write to Brian and see if he'll send you a used rectal thermometer that you can treasure forever?
@pyannaguy Briuan Setzer is an artist in the true sense of the word, by rejuvianting rockabilly at time when it was unpopular, to big band. I have nothing but respect for him as an artist and educator
@cowboybear40 Couldn't agree more! I think the guy's terrific for the reasons you mention (I've said pretty much the same, above, in this thread). It's just that this particular arrangement wasn't my favorite.
@pyannaguy to glitzy? too much bling? no way you're wrong....but anyways it seems to work for him as he's won a grammy ! .....and if you ever meet him be sure to insult him with that stray cats are "low rent" comment. He'll love that. Don't quit your day job to become a music critic!
@SM038 I have nothing but praise for Brian Setzer but for Christ's sake: Have you never really liked an artist but had one or two songs or arrangements that you didn't care for? By the way, the 'low rent' description isn't a putdown. Have you ever seen Tom Waits and his approach, look, and sensibilities? His music isn't from the penthouse...like Charles Bukowski's - it's from the dives and low rent, skid row neighborhoods of the world and the mind...and...it's brilliant!
Wow! i thought it was pretty good, ive see other covers and this one sounds better than most ive heard. i dont know but i dont think stevie would have not liked it!
I'm a big Setzer fan, but not too crazy about this cover. At least he made the song his own & didn't just do a SRV rip off like everyone else would have done. Worth watching this vid just to hear him tear it up from 2:44 on. Go man go!!
Setzer and his orchestra were on a PBS special back around 1996 called "Swing Alive!" They performed this song plus "Stray Cat Strut" and "Hoodoo Voodoo Doll" - all big band style! They were the final group to perform on the special and the orchestra brings down the house. Pick it up if you don't have it.
Setzer rocks harder than most metal bores.
