This Barbie-blond bombshell of Scandanavian descent was born in 1920, making her around 50 years at the time of this number. If the guy wasn't so young looking, the song would seem much less sick and pathetic. I find it depressing. It makes her look like a cougar with four facelifts. They at least should have had a man her age with salt and pepper hair. Note: Ms. Lee always sang her TV songs within a sort of skit in it if possible.
She certainly doesn't break into a sweat. It's very reflective and wistful. Without a mic she'd be rather lost but her voice has a lovely velvety quality and she does the song proud with her interpretation. Impossible to compare the Streisand, Springfield or Bassey treatment. They are all tremendous - just different
She was heaven. I don't know if this is from the Petula Clarke show in the U.K. where she sang a song lying on a brass bed, after the director yelled cut! Peggy Lee delved down her cleavage and pulled out a bundle of(fake) pound notes and thrust them at the young man and everyone went into hysterics. Peggy Lee was heaven.
What a wonderful era, the great Peggy Lee. As a youg fellow I was working as a banquet waiter at the Sheraton Park in DC and in this banquet for a big convention. We were about to serve dinner and when I enter the dinning room, there she was, with a full orquestra singing:"Is That all there is", it knock me right off my feet.
Love the music -- she has a wonderfully subtle jazzy voice and this is a great song. Don't love the visuals, though -- I'm a little creeped out by her lying in bed next to that comatose-seeming younger man. So I'll listen to the music and not look! She was awesome; I saw her perform in New York three times.
Like a spoonful of sugar, there are no substitutes for class. Yep, peggy had a limited range, a little stiff and those eyes lashes.. but she had class from Calfornia to the Dakotas... very unique performer and a talented American composer.
Couldn't agree more. Peggy's voice was of extraordinary purity and her time (in the technical, rhythmic sense of the word), and timing (a more subjective measure) were both sublime. By the way, her range wasn't as limited as that; I've worked it out to be at least an octave and a half...more than acceptable for perfection. All best to you. Robert
This is an outstanding version....Can someone wake up lover boy and tell him that one of the most sensually-voiced women in the world is singing him a love song....and that time is of the essence !!!!!
@htuomnom It's a case of apples vs. oranges. DIfferent styles, different eras, different voices, these two are as different as 2 singers can be, but there's room for both, and many more. There's no point comparing.
I think it's a really creative presentation of a song ...acting it , as she sings .Other than opera, I don't remember any other singer presenting a song in quite such an innovative way.
I don't see what is so odd about the set up. It's pretty obvious, and a clever take on the song's message. Late on a rainy night, the character she plays is restless and afraid of what the future will bring. Will this man that she loves so much, but who is much younger than she, stay with her for the rest of her life? Meanwhile, her young and fresh beau sleeps comfortably next to her, with not a worry in his pretty head.
It was an odd set-up, this fellow in bed next to our Peg, as part of the decor. I was sort of hoping he turned out to be Arnold Stang or Rip Taylor, a comedy ending.
Sexy. Peggy looking like a blonde Mona Lisa, sleepless on a rainy night, wondering if the younger man sharing her bed is going to spend the rest of his life with her. Meanwhile, he shows no worries through it all, sleeping like the baby he is!
I would suggets you really spread it all out over a good period of time. When it is all put up close together it disappears onto high numbered pages all together - she becomes invisible and all the low numbered pages get fille dup with people "doing" PL !!!!!
If you spread it out it will tak emuch longer for this to happen.
Interesting Dusty did a version around the same period and they have such silky smooth Dusty is also angelic

If I had not already heard Dame Shirley I would have thought Peggy Lee, or Barabara Streisand or Vaughan were wonderful.

I like the setting and the interpretation, and the way she uses space between phrases (without getting too technical). Beautiful.

I love Peggy's late '60s - early '70s recordings. She had lived a lot of life and it came through in her beautiful, weary voice.
