I've seen a squirrel eating a snake before (but it was already dead from being run over in the street).

i have a squirrel that lives in my neighbourhood that launches itself out of trees to catch and kill birds.. I thought that was the only one!!.. I saw it eat a black bird... not a crow.. but the smaller version of a crow.. was pretty messed up.. the bird was still alive while it was eating it :O

I wasn't aware squirrels could eat meat, but I am not really too surprised. They are rodents after all, and they are known to pretty generalized eaters. I guess a bit of carrion or small prey once in a blue moon might help them replenish certain nutrients that their vegan diets are otherwise low on. Yes, I saw this when I was living and working at the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite. One day I was walking around the Ahwahnee cabins and I saw a Blue Jays nest in a tree not far from the ground. The next thing I saw were several squirrels attacking the nest and dragging the newborn jays down into the ground into their nest.

If I had to guess, I think maybe the squirrels resort to eating other animals in order to get their complete proteins. Eating nuts and seeds alone will not supply your body with the essential amino acids it needs. I would presume that squirrels would probably try to go for things like insects, lizards, or frogs before attacking birds - not because of kindness (natural selection doesn't work that way) - but because they'd probably be easier to catch.

They are opportunistic and theres a very good chance that bird was sick and easy to catch. Most squirrels stick a vegetarian staple, but they have to supplement from time to time. Its evolution at work. Just like Great white pelicans turned to eat Cape gannet chicks when their food supply started disappearing. They even puke up half digested chick for their own chicks.

I really had no idea they did this! My mother used to leave nuts for them out on the back stoop, but she would also toss bread to the birds in the back yard, and there was never an incident. I saw a hippo on a nature program chow down on the carcass of a drowned zebra. Just tonight I watched a national geographic program. @hispano33 Actually, squirrels are rodents, which are naturally omnivorous. Rats will eat anything and everything that crosses their path, and squirrels are very closely related to them.

It's not necessarily common, but it's natural. It's really no different than eating insects, which is something that occurs commonly among species in tropical climates.
