i absolutely abhor the remake, all the stupid cheesy music where there was none before, totally ruined what WAS an awesome cult classic....your ending is fine...really really disappointed in the remake
I know that the original ending of them riding into the sun might be kinda corny, but it works... And I fell in love with Tangerine Dream because of this movie. That song MADE the end absolutely amazing, just no reason to change that.
I just don't know how I feel about this ending. I go back and forth in my mind.
Jack...the man of the forest. Living away from society.
Lilly... the high lady of the kingdom, destined to live a life at the center of society.
How could it ever truly work out between them? How would their young love survive the ultimate reality? This ending is more bitter sweet, but also far more sad then the US theatrical ending where it's implied they run off and get married. It's mature but leaves me low.
This version is horrific! I actually feel quite ill! I am so heartbroken that I live in the UK and can only get the european version on dvd. I'm lucky enough to have a vhs of the american version, but one day it will break :'( When that day comes, I'm moving state side!
What happened to tangerine dream? I went to see this film when it was first released. The music was by tangerine dream (and Brian Ferry). I saw legend a few months ago on DVD and the music was orchestral.
Ridley Scott truly is a visionary. His films have a distinctive look and feel about them. Legend is one of his best. I even prefer the orchestral score to the theatrical Tangerine Dream score. The orchestral one was commissioned first but at the last minute TO's was substituted.
at half of the movie when robert has his flashback of his family being picked up by the chopper, his son says by to him by to him by shaping a butterfly with his hands through the glass windows of the chopper. rather interesting.
This is the ONLY ending I want to see what's up with the one on the DVD???? I bought several different editions trying to get this ending. Can anyone help me find it?!!
The ending here is a (rather amateur) custom edit I did in 2006, combining elements from the director's cut and the US theatrical version. So you won't find *this* ending on any DVD release, sorry!
always loved this film ,i remember as a child it was on bbc 2 every couple of years .and i would force my mum to watch it with me,and it was on much longer than the dvd cut i've just brought
I doubt it I'm afraid. It's a good film for it's time, but has dated a LOT and is only really good because of the effort that went into creating the world - the dialogue and plot aren't that great and the characters are one-dimensional. I think most of the major fans of the film like it for nostalgic reasons.
Tom Cruise has done better films...Interview with a Vampire is incredible. Tropic Thunder he played well, Collateral, Vanilla Sky, Minority Report, A Few Good men etc
The only thing that rubs me wrong about this ending well, 2 things...the forced dialog....and the fact she gave him the ring and basically the wedding wont take place. All that he went thru. Just me being analytical.
just watched the theatrical version last night, and I so like this ending of yours much better.....makes more sense than the movie ending, to my mind.
I must look out for a copy of the directors cut.....obviously has some wicked extras.
both scores are great, but the jerry goldsmith score feels much more like a natural fairy tale story type feel. the tangerine dream score was great too, but it has a darker appeal to it
If you ask me, the supposed "alternative" ending isn't really all that different. It's just the happy ending portrayed a little differently. Instead of both of them running toward the sun, Jack is by himself.
I always loved this movie sooo much.. when I was a kid.. I was afraid of the creepy darkness-guy haha :P And always have to cry when the unicorn died and became happy when they stood up again at the end! :D
Wish it could have been both endings combined. Both unicorns come back to life when Lily wakes and the horn is replaced. They don't run off together but do as this alternate ending did. They may marry later. Wonder if it could be made into a fun book?
I have seen the Tangerine dream version a number of times and it was the first version I had seen. Afer many years and seeing many fantasy films, I can say that the TD version completely takes my breath away. I have seen the other version and it just lack the open-minded fantasy that the TD version supplies. Personally I find the non-TD version to be too much like a half assed Disney film. many ppl will disagree, but that is how I feel about it and this message is mostly for TD version fans.
I liked this ending but i'm still partial to the original. I like the magical scene with the unicorns and I like Tangerine Dream's song better. Jack and Lily need to run off together that is the way it was meant to be. If you are going to change the music then leave the ending as is.
Nice job! I like that you inserted the shots of the alicorn restoration into the scene without much extension of the music... cuz really, who needs to see Jack swimming that much? I think your timing & lengths of some of the Unicorn shots could have been a bit tighter, & I don't think you need the shot of it getting it... leave it at the horn being restored and the sun rising, & let the audience not get full satisfaction from that little sequence until both Unicorns appear towards the very end.

I have to disagree. The Tangerine Dreams song "loved by the sun" still haunts my childhood dreams and I love its originality. It doesnt sound like any other OST. While I agree Jerry Goldsmith's score is lovely, I feel it would have been more fitting in another movie. Between the 2 scores the mood changes dramatically!

If you ask me Riddley Scott should remake the movie. I think he can get away with making a new cause first off he didn't kill off the goblins: Pox, Blix, and Blunder they just disappeared except for Blunder. I would love to watch this movies sequel with more battles and more special affect with CG or something for more magic. Spread the word so that Riddley can think of the Idea. Although its obvious that the original cast can't be again.
I liked this ending a lot more... probably because it didn't have that awful song in it. Even though I don't much care for the bit where she goes home... it's like the end of PeterPan when Wendy leaves... though she took all his friends with her.
...Okay, my Wendy hate was entirely off topic. But the overall Legend is a delightful movie.
Jerry Goldsmith got (and continues) to get kudos from reviewers and fans, to this day, about his score for Legend. It's a beautiful score. But, we are all entitiled to our own opinions. Cheers.
I agree with you: I always remeber the score by Tangerine Dream because that was the version I saw as a kid. I also more liked the ending on the UK release, with Tim Curry laughing, which means ther's no good without evil. light without darkness...
I so like the other ending better! This score sounds like it belongs with a Spielberg movie and the ending is just "sweet." The TD score and Jon Anderson's voice and the lyrics fit this movie so much better. It's full of passion and fills the audience with wonder and awe. It's true to the fantasy/fairytale that the movie represents. This one is just okay. The other is fabulous and will fill me with wonder and hope forever.
I just watched Legend Director's cut and I thought it was just awful. You are truly right. The movie seems like a non-animated disney movie. The other version is much better; I can't believe movie professionals would actually think the Director's cut is superior.
This ending sort of disappoints me. They talk on and on, and get so sentimental with one another, and then they just go back off in their own little worlds again. Practically nothing changes, they don't learn anything, and Lily passes the whole thing off as a nightmare.
In the other, it's so pure and sweet, just like their youthful selves. They just run off together, with hardly any words needing to be said at all.
Good effort, but I wouldn't have Legend any other way than the original. Tangerine Dream more fully expresses the mood of the film. I'll take them over any orchestra anyday.
did you know that Miyamoto, creator of Mario bros and donkey kong get ispiration from this movie in order to made the legend of zelda, on of the best videogames ever made?
the thearer release can be found at your local movie rental or on the web. the music (score) is much better, is more mystic. I have the sound track, and love it.
no effin way!!! the other ending with the song loved by the sun is soooo beautiful! its so enchabting and really captures the true love of jack and lily!!!:)
I understand the Director wanted this orchestra sound track and it sounds good, but the original music was very moving in some places also, I wish he would have grafted the two styles together.
i enjoy the director's cut ending better, because leaving the one unicorn dead is cooler than having the story come too full circle with the resuscitation of the first unicorn, also, the dialog between lily and jack in this ending drags. but overall thanks for sharing this alternate version
They showed the alternate Director's Cut or The Ultimate Collector's DVD version on Startz one day i was watching it, and never knew that I was looking at the original version of Legend. The cut version is great, but not as great as the extended versions.
There are way more than two versions of this movie. The american movie was my fav but when i wanted the one that has tangerine dream do the soundtrack i was fantasically impressed even more and it became another new fav movie to me.
It's interesting psychology; some thing one is lame and some think the other is lame. I think the, "make it an 80's rock video and edit the heck out of it cause American movie goers are retarded" one is a tad lame. When I saw Scott's original, it blew me away and I was no longer able to even just like the electronica version. Didn't have a fraction of the magic or the musical intelligence. And she only sings a little bit... nothing approaching a musical. Anyhoodlydoodle...
Oh my goodness I've never seen this ending before.. thank gawd cause I probably wouldn't be such a big fan if I had seen this ending.. Your all right the music of Tangerine Dreams was way better
i grew up with this movie and the one i saw wasnt musical, lilly didnt sing in it and the end had tangerine dream's "loved by the sun" playing at the end. i loved it. i rented it last year and it was a different movie...a freaking musical. i hated it. anyone know how to get the other version?
Yea, there's two versions. The one you're talking about is the one I grew up on. It's the U.S. version where Lilly and Jack actually stay together at the end. Sounds like you found the European version where they sing a lot and she leaves him at the end (what the heck?!). Anyway, if you have a Video Warehouse nearby that's where I found it. They rent both the American and European version in one case so you can choose which one you want to watch.
this ending was not a good one. i'm glad they didnt go with it. it changes the whole relationship they had to just friends. More like siblings than anything else. that sux. i liked the other ending. it made it seem they had a more intimate relationship. more than friendship love.
Since when do "just friends" or "siblings" french kiss that much????
I don't like this ending, it makes Lily look like an idiot. And the whole flow of the movie is upset at the end by menial conversation?? BORING. I prefer the Loved by the Sun ending!!!!
Sioko: I think all that French Kissing was just a bit of self-indulgent ad-libbing by Tom and Mia.....which Ridley impishly decided to let slide, ho ho ho.
This is the ending I remember seeing and loving as a child. When I purchased Legend years later and saw the "Loved by the Sun" ending I thought that I just remembered it wrong! Thanks! Now I know! LOL
i actually prefer this ending to the other one..i despise all things that end in 'it was all a dream' but they made up for it here...i like it :P thanks for posting XD
tom cruise was 16 when he made this movie. Resource: silver springs florida tour, the scenes where he dives in for princess Lily's wring were shot in the spring and on the boat tours they stated he was 16 when the film was shot :c)

I like this version X3 I'll probably get shot for saying it, but I don't care XD

I love this ending. I can't abide those Jon Anderson lyrics in the American Cut, for one thing.

Exelent a work of art indeed.

Good effort, but I wouldn't have Legend any other way than the original. Tangerine Dream more fully expresses the mood of the film. I'll take them over any orchestra anyday.

the thearer release can be found at your local movie rental or on the web. the music (score) is much better, is more mystic. I have the sound track, and love it.

Very nice. As good as the original ending. Thank you very much for sharing it.

Wer do u get the one with the Tangerine Dream song on at the end? I LOVED that one so much
;[ But my IDIOTIC bro taped over it. ;[

I found it on the internet. lol never even knew it existed until I found it. Was greatly impressed.

Anyhoodlydoodle...
prayfertrey 4 years ago
Oh my goodness I've never seen this ending before.. thank gawd cause I probably wouldn't be such a big fan if I had seen this ending.. Your all right the music of Tangerine Dreams was way better

i grew up with this movie and the one i saw wasnt musical, lilly didnt sing in it and the end had tangerine dream's "loved by the sun" playing at the end. i loved it. i rented it last year and it was a different movie...a freaking musical. i hated it. anyone know how to get the other version?
amatrineprincess77 4 years ago
Yea, there's two versions. The one you're talking about is the one I grew up on. It's the U.S. version where Lilly and Jack actually stay together at the end. Sounds like you found the European version where they sing a lot and she leaves him at the end (what the heck?!). Anyway, if you have a Video Warehouse nearby that's where I found it. They rent both the American and European version in one case so you can choose which one you want to watch.
MilanaMarara 4 years ago
thanks i'll steer clear from the other one. i told a friend who hadnt watched it to rent it and she got the lame version too then called me a liar!

this ending was not a good one. i'm glad they didnt go with it. it changes the whole relationship they had to just friends. More like siblings than anything else. that sux. i liked the other ending. it made it seem they had a more intimate relationship. more than friendship love.
zeroashly 4 years ago
Since when do "just friends" or "siblings" french kiss that much????
I don't like this ending, it makes Lily look like an idiot. And the whole flow of the movie is upset at the end by menial conversation?? BORING. I prefer the Loved by the Sun ending!!!!
Sioko 4 years ago
Sioko: I think all that French Kissing was just a bit of self-indulgent ad-libbing by Tom and Mia.....which Ridley impishly decided to let slide, ho ho ho.
RODERICKMOLASAR 4 years ago
This is the better ending. The pop song at the end of the other one was out of place.
redrabbitjohnson 4 years ago
Syntlara 4 years ago

TY Escapay, great job :}
