  • Not a fan of the Phil version of Genesis but this VERY COOL..never heard these two songs together and Phil is sticking to Pete's vocals...though he actually struggles at the end of Dancing...odd considering Phil has the higher voice. Love it...great find!

  • It's amazing how much Collins sounds like Gabriel on this track.

  • yeap, No Gabriel --- No Genesis; No magic......

  • two of my favourite Genesis songs put together and Phil doing an excellent job on vocals! TERRIFIC!

  • No Hackett no Genesis.

  • @corum428 True but "No Gabriel, No Genesis" sounds more like it

  • AWESOME!!! Never heard that one before!!! Could you please send it to me by e-mail so i'll be able to put it on my MP3?? Big thanks!!!

  • phil can outsing pete anyday

  • "Citizens of hope and glory ,the time goes by.

It's the time OF YOUR LIFE!"

At 52 , never stopped fighting back on idiocy and injustice , I do really start realizing that Time-thing INDEEP! It's running. And only til it will be RUNNED-UP!

    40 years a tru fan.

    Bernard

  • phil is the better singer pete ie good but phil rules

  • @onetomanyish

How can you say that? They both know how to sing but Phil's voice is only a fraction of Peter's vocal range.

  • great tune

  • AMAZING BAND!!!!!!!

  • 4:00 EPIC MELLOTRON KICKS IN!!!!!!

  • Touch me now now now now now... Sounds like Peter is singing that Section. Thats nice

I Like the Daryl Solo, more energitc. I think if there are any Video Recordings from this Show, maybe just Audience. But that would be better than nothing :D

  • First time I've ever heard Phil Collins sing the whole of 'Dancing with the Moonlit Knight) - and he does a much better job than I expected. Steurmer acquits himself well with his slight variations on Hackett's original solo. Good stuff!

  • Thanks for posting this, Laserkev. Don't you just LOVE the bootleggers for capturing one-night-onlies like this, or Lilywhite Lilith / The Waiting Room / Wot Gorilla from the 1977 tour's opening night?

  • Oh my God, I've never heard this sung by Phil. Thank you very much!!!

  • I like this version with Daryl, sounds modern. Hackett is more "romantic style" and melancholy.

  • I like this version with Daryl, sounds modern. Hackett is more "romantic style" and melancholy.

  • daryl stuermer GOD!!!!

  • Phil has a good go at this and doesn't do a bad job, but he can't quite belt it out the way PG does.

  • phil has a nice voice he just fucked it up by selling out

  • @thegarmentroom

Actually untill Duke and Abacab, Phil didn't write very much, Blame Tony.

  • "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" should be a song to add on "Guitar Hero"!

  • @Yourmomisnthere Or In Rock Band

  • That's Phil. And I like his voice better. Don't kill me for saying that. I LOVE Peter and am an avid fan of his, go to all his concerts, and have all his recordings. I just think Phil has a clearer voice.

  • @MiKriya I agree he has a clearer voice, but i think peter is better and parts of songs like the end of suppers ready, were it gets more intense, Peter was also better at songs like get em out by friday

  • both perform it wonderfully

  • The whole concert is great and this is the only known recording of Moonlit in its entity with Phil. Nice to listen to, aber it lacks the subtlety the original version had. The bass sounds strong.

    Great picture show.

  • Good try but This is def nailed better by the master gabriel.

  • A beautiful recording, found on the CD "Masters In Chicago" or the disc "In the Mouth of the Monster." An incredible rendition, bravely put forth by Genesis, with Collins at the helm. I have to hand it to them, bringing "Selling England" out to a beloved crowd.....was more than I could ask for in 1978.

  • I love Peter Gabriel and all, but I still laughed at his squeak/voice crack at 4:46

    Magnificent song though!

  • this solo tour de force is one of hacketts ultimate genius strokes! i always used to believe it is all synth solo!!

    what a sound wizard!!!

  • @MoveOverCasanova He's Daryl Stuermer

  • @etemtatar

As far as I know they didnt do a full version of TMB after Phil took over!

  • @squonkynut

And this is the fullest version I've heard of DWTMK from the Phil years.

  • I saw Steve do the Firth solo on the Trick , WandW, and his last solo electric tour of the states. In my opinion Steve's version is moody, intense, complex and full of emotion. Brilliant really.

DS-I saw his version on the last tour. It was weak in my opinion. No comparison.

Althought the trio made lots of great music after his departure, Genesis was never the same after STeve left in 1977. Steve Hacket's contributions to the band are significant and unfortunately often overlooked.

  • Fantastic version! This is actually the most I have heard of 'The Musical Box' with Phil Collins as frontman. Did they ever perfom the whole of the musical box with Phil? And if they did, could someone send me a link? Thnx :)

  • Last time the instrumental section was played live. Great version!! Though Stuermer plays far too many notes...

  • Excellent sound quality and wonderful versions.

  • @vanXerxe Seconds Out is my favourite Genesis Album. I'd be curious to know which tracks Steve played guitar and which tracks Daryl played

  • Seconds Out is entirely Hackett.

  • I actually do not miss hearing Peter singing on this. Phil does it justice. The band was so tight back during this era.

  • You can already hear Stuermer's tendency to make the guitar parts more twiddly. Fair enough that's his style, and he's a good musician, but I always prefer Hackett's more economical approach.

  • @Reckoner65

right, in hacketts play there was never one thoughtless tone--. everything was in it´s place, even when he only played one whiny high note in the background

  • oh i didnt know well i like this guitar better then lol. Well look at other songs live like firth of fifth in the early years and prior to his leaving and how much he improved thats what i was getting at. Too bad genesis had to go and fuck themselves up in the 80s and beyond. Sigh....good bands always die young.

  • You're right! It's the reason why the live album of the Wind tour was called Seconds Out !

  • steve hackett improved so much in such a short time. Watch the 1974 then this one amazing wow....

  • grandiose

  • Many years ago most of the show from Chicago 1978 was broadcast on American radio. I chanced upon a copy on a C90 cassette tape some years later. Top quality, probably the bese Genesis you will ever hear. 1 day when I retire I will put it on CD. Atroundthe same time 1980 I got a Dire Straits tape- Most excellent

  • We shouldn't ever forget that it was Gabriel who LEFT! He wasn't sacked by Collins.

  • this is fantastic! Very impressed with this post gabriel rendition

  • i hate the fact that collins' genesis take a lot of gabriel's genesis long songs and cut them to put among with other long songs.. playing only the end of musical box without it's beginning is senseless, just like playing the end floyd's Saucerful of Secrets without the whole exciting begininng

  • I have very similar opinion.Peter Gabriel more convincing in singing, more beautiful voice and more

    sensitive and

touching .For me Genesis was much better when he's singing. But the most important thing is to enjoj the music whatever who perform ..The rest is only the difference of opinion .

  • Great!

  • Guys, WTF? This stupid discussion of who is better phil or peter, daryll or steve. All daryll is doing is to improvising and playing the guitar his style, instead of copying hackett, and thats ok! he is a musician!

  • If he wants to do something other than copy Hackett, he should play a song Hackett didn't play first. Let him improvise on the songs post Hackett because God knows Rutherford's guitar licks leave much to be desired.

  • but one thing is clear..old dear daryl stuermer is good to play, but NOT GENESIS SONGS....

  • agree but c'm on, the poor collins can sing, can't he?

yes, those songs belongs to Peter's era and he's the one who should sing 'em...but other songs like Entangled or Mad Man Moon by Trick of the Tail are not bad with collin's voice...

  • this, my frieind.......is genesis at their very best.just listen and enjoy.

  • the guy singing is Phil Collins.

  • The drummer ?!?

    Why, Peter Gabriel got sick?

  • so, you're from the past, huh? it must be shocking for you the way things change. there's a time travel support group out there for you. with a little time, therapy and drugs i think you'll be able to adjust. :)

  • He'd left by 1975.

    LURKMOAR.

  • INB4 possible troll detected

  • @Phobero the guy played the guitar is the same gave his cock to you mom ass

and her pussy realy stayed an atrocious......XD XD

  • Well as I said before, Phil did a very good job, He made quite an effort trying to reach Gabriel peaks like for instance at 2:19, and Daryl made it too, quite different from the original version, and then again, that's why Genesis doesn't exist anymore, playing these old masterpieces the commercial way is quite an insult to us, the fans that made this unique band grow, but anyway, for me, there is only one guy that remains faithful to this classic philosophy and still great, Steve Hackett...

  • Steurmer utterly ruins this magical piece, totally inappropriate playing as he did on every single Genesis track. Widdly widdly merchant. No feel for the song at all. The Hacket parts are INTEGRAL to the song, not improv opportunities.

  • wow i never heard the Phil version of this before; it's an interesting version. I'm so used to Peter singing it though. Sounds pretty great.

  • thanks for posting this! i got this whole bootleg show on CD probably 12 years ago, but i haven't been able to find it for a long time now. :(

  • great audio, good pics, thanks for posting.

  • daryls kicked ass !!!!! ....the begining of great guitar player and he still turns to metal sound the genesis old song

    thank you daryl

  • i generally like what daryl brings to the band, but in this song he's completely butchering it.

  • No Mames ...

    V-a-y-a-n-s-e a-l-a-m-a-d-r-e q-u-e-l-o-s c-a-g-o -p-u-t-o-s

  • Perhaps you've got a point, but , there is no need to insult, and use bad language, no hay necesidad de insultar, éste es un foro para gente con educación y se expresan pensamientos fundados en algo sólido y con congruencia meramente basados en el buen gusto y conocimiento de éstas piezas, Cheers !

  • 2 of 2: ...as to honoring the original parts that people expect and where you have a little space to do your own thing. It was simply a bad decision to not play the guitar parts that are such an integral part of the song. The rest of the band is setting up these classic moments but the opportunity to nail it goes unanswered. After the awesome 1977 tour with Steve, 1978 could be considering a re-building year for the band. Rewards would continue but they would be fewer and shorter in duration.

  • While obviously having sung the Musical Box closing section many times, the Dancing With the Moonlit Knight section seems to be under-rehearsed and comes up short on vocals and lead guitar. It's a demanding song for the singer and it has certain expectations attached to it. The same could be said for the classic guitar work of the original version. Darryl is a fine musician on his 1st tour with the band; many decisions have to be made..... 1 of 2 parts continued

  • "Photos" not "Photo's"

Sorry, but I hate apostrophes being used to make a word plural.

    Still, great audio.

  • Peter Gabriel >>>> Phil Collins

  • say what you will about pc's singing generally; that's a matter of taste.

but let's be fair: this is a 1978 clip of genesis trying out a medley of 2 old songs, linked in a way that would test the endurance of ANY voice.

i'm as big a pg fan as anyone: but if you honestly think pg would have had an EASIER time getting through this sequence, you're kidding yourself. pg's brilliance = atmosphere, phrasing, affect, etc., NOT technical consistency.

it's not just about hitting notes.

  • I'm not sure that linking the two songs would make it much harder to sing for either of the two vocalists. Also, in 1978, Phil's voice was in a pretty good shape. What he shoud've done here, in my opinion, was to use the phalsetto, which he did very well in the 1970'ies - especially in the studio, where many of his vocals were sung in octaves. Pete would've done that, securing cleaner intervals and a much less stressed voice.

That being said, I like this perfomance.

  • "I'm not sure that linking the two songs would make it much harder to sing for either of the two vocalists."

I'm not arguing that simply linking the songs is what makes it harder: I'm saying the precise segue here amounts to a great deal of vocal acrobatics without pause. agree that pc (esp. in the late 70's-early 80s) was as good at doing that as anyone; I'm just responding to people who are giving pc a hard time for missing 1-2 notes in this ONE performance that we happen to have on tape.

  • And anybody who's heard tapes of Genesis live gigs 70-75 has to admit that pg's not the most consistent or technical singer. I'm saying that's true, but so what? there are a lot of singers who can hit every note whom I'd be happy never to listen to, just because they lack talent in a million other ways that are a lot more important than just hitting notes.

  • I think Phil did quite a good job with this one... though he never was a strong vocalist. And he most certainly isn't by now. The TIOA tour was a travesty, singing-wise, IMO.

  • screw off dude. @ least Phil is loyal to Genesis. Peter up and left. Phil didnt!

  • "Loyal to Genesis"? That's a good one! So that's why he left the band in the mid-nineties, only to return 1½ decades and a divorce later for a cash-in tour. Loyalty, indeed! At least Pete had integrity! Anyway, what the hell has loyalty got to do with vocal duties?

  • yes. loyal. he came back to genesis. IT WAS A FREE TOUR you dumbshit. Peter said no. Loyalty has to do with vocal duties because if you START a band, you finish it to the end. Ok you just lost u dumbfuck!

  • You stupid fucking son-of-a-bitch. If you can't argue your point, couldn't you at least do yourself a favor and get your FACTS STRAIGHT?! The Turn It On Again tour wasn't a "FREE TOUR" at all (whatever the fuck you mean by that). They played one charity gig and one free gig, as I recall - and that's out of at least twenty concerts. Also - try to fathom this: Phil Collins isn't a founding member of Genesis; in fact the group was founded with PETER GABRIEL at the vocal helm!

  • i lost the game

  • Sooo.... true. Phil is a run-of-the-mill singer (not good, not bad) but Peter has been on the same highest level otherwise only known from Jon Anderson of Yes, with an expressive angelic voice. It was such an advantage for a progressive rock band these unique days to have a charismatic vocalist like Jon and Peter - and, e.g., to some extent Fish of Marillion. Jon and Peter were the fine "difference" between Yes (my absolute heroes) and Genesis on one and the great Pink Floyd on the other side.

  • It's not horrible. It's just not Peter's slightly smoky voice.

  • como mejoro felipe colina su voz! jeje

  • OH COME ON. THIS IS GONE TOO???

  • Collins falla finita. Ti piacerebbe cantare come il genio Gabriel...

  • it lacks, on guitar is the hack. Darryl

  • This is raw rough and fantastic!!!!!! Chester is playing this very well. What a hard song to play. Moonlit Knight is one of the hardest I think of the Genesis songs of any era. The band is damn tight. This has not been all slicked up and smoothed out either. Phil's voice was just more musical then Peter's voice when he was on. He was still getting use to singing here. Around 80'-83' his voice was always in control. Listen to the Abacab tour specifically Man on the corner. Perfect!!!!

  • phil is good

    peter is a genious

  • Phil's got problems with the highest notes... Should have used his phalsetto, which he was pretty good at.

  • WOW! I've never heard Phil do Moonlit Knight before! Thank you!

  • Darryl Stuermer is a f--ing terrible lead player..bad tone, fizzy sound...totally misses the point of this song with that terrible noodling..Hackett's solo on this was majestic. For some reason, Rutherford thought that Stuermer was more fluid than Hackett...well, when Darryl can play classical guitar like Hackett, maybe I'll take notice. And for fluid fusion during this era, DiMeola knocked this wannabe into a cocked hat..terrible perm too. Actually Phil is murdering this vocally too.

  • Your comments are a bit overstated...

  • another dumbass!!! cannot apreciate the excellent performnance....

your are nothing.......who do you think you are? the son of hackett

    shut up!!! asshole

  • Pure class!

  • Peter!!!! sos el mejor!!!!!

  • I was there!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Chicago 1978!!!!!

  • Thanks., But Phil forzed his voice.

  • and add trevor horn to that list who was in yes, formed buggles with future asia man geoffrey downes, and produced the 99 remix of the carpet crawlers for genesis!

  • uptown theater, chicago. my favorite boot. great recording if you all can get your hands on it.

  • Drama by Yes(with Tervor singing) is one of my fav CDs. Also like classic '70s Yes and Genesis music. I'm 25 and have loved prog half of my life

  • here are a few examples: tony levin, bassist for crimson, has played with gabriel for years;bill bruford,of yes and crimson, played with genesis in 76;the supergroup, asia had memebers of yes, crimson and elp;hackett and howe of yes formed gtr,and you can't forget the tokyo tapes that had hackett, john wetton of asia and crimson, and chester thompson on drums.

  • now as for king crimson, fripp intentionally screwed with their sound and song selection in the 80s. There was bad blood flowing in all directions in that case. Lately he has changed his tune. Its also interesting how the histories of Genesis,Yes,King Crimson and ELP are greatly intertwined.

  • i've never had a tremendous problem with the different eras, there's good to excellent aspects to all of them. It just comes out jaded to earlier fans when the trio hit their commercial stride in the 80s and seemed to suppress its earlier incarnations with each tour, concentrating on the fly by night aka soccer mom top 40 audience. And hearing bands like yes and floyd still owing their gratitude to the past just made it worse for some fans. Could be why they felt Ripples was perfect for 07 tour

  • I, too, love all eras of Genesis. ATTWT is one gem of an album

  • Great! This has always been one of my favourite early Genesis songs. Phil carries it off real well here. Obviously he is a little better on the first half, but his effort on the last part was quite good as well. Daryl does a pretty good job on the guitar too; quite different than Steve, but good nevertheless. I quite like the way he takes Steve parts and makes them more his own- interesting.

  • Never heard this version before - outstanding!

  • cool to hear phil singing dancing with the moonlit knight, as it is some of the best music that genesis ever wrote

  • Generally a great combination, but it's obvious Phil had trouble with the vocals on the chorus of Moonlit Knight, which was probably why they never performed it in full again. Also: Daryl. Please. Can't you play Steve's guitar lines as they're meant to be for once? The pretentious doodling is even more annoying on this than on Firth of Fifth.

  • Daryl is simply a different person than Steve, I think he has a right to interpret the song as he wishes. Besides, this is a live performance...live performances by their very nature are meant to be more wild and spontaneous than studio recordings.

  • Don't think Phil had trouble. His voice just isn't exactly the same as Pete's. Bravo, Phil! Nice to still hear the 'tron on '78 live Genesis, cause they didn't use on much on ATTWT. Nice that segued into the aggressive part on the Musical Box. Is that the arrangement that is used on Seconds Out, Although, it segues from TLLDOB

  • I was there.......Thanks for postingxxxxx

  • I wish we could see some video of the "Mirrors 78" tour

  • Excellent photos from that tour -- thank you! Fantastic song version also.

  • Yeah nice photos. Amazing that all of these photos can be seen on Simon Funnel's website. I wonder where you got these from?

  • i dont know why you got a thumbs down on that one. i gave you a thumbs up to off set it and because it's important to properly cite sources- even on 'casual' internet pages, and even when it's a simple fan video tacking a slideshow over some audio.

this is a great version i may have never heard elsewhere but giving credit where credit is due- should ALWAYS be considered when you know the source. i'm flagging the video accordingly, hopefully a quick fix will come before it's taken down.

    peace.

  • Wish I could retract my last statement. He does give credit to the website which is the one I thought he pulled from. :)
