First off, every tower crane I have worked on has a slip ring assembly that allows it to go round. Second, yes there is indeed a brake, The motor controller provides AC to run the motors but DC to lock one in place, try it sometime with an AC motor, as little as 6VDC can lock one in place solid, add to this the gearing of the drive and you have it.
In order to have it spin free the drive is disconnected, what keeps it in place is again, a DC operated clutch.
It would actually be far more dangerous if the carrior locking pin or carrior brake were in place thus side loading the crane and potentially causing it to fail and crash down.
It would actually be far mor dangerous if the carrior locking pin or carrior brake were in place thus side loading the crane and potentially causing it to fail and crash down.
That crane was not spinning out of control. When the wind picks up like that it is too dangerous to make any picks so all you can do is disengage the house lock (swing brake) and let it blow in the wind. There was nothing wrong with that crane at all.
my understanding is exactly what you are saying, but I'd think the motors on the turntable would only allow a certain amount of spin and break the rotation enough so it wouldn't spin uncontrollably but still allow the crane to be put in "weathervane" mode.
It wasnt spinning uncontrollably. It was doing what it was designed to do in high winds. The Magnetorque on both sides of the upper spin the drive shaft. The drive shaft turns a great big gear that the upper sits on and thats how it swings. When you open the pressure valve for the swing brake there are no more brakes. Thats what I do everyday before I go home for the night so it wont tip over in high winds. I also raise the ball and swing once to make sure it wont hit anything
Nie ma co sie dziwic!! Dziwig gdy nie ma na nim operatora musi miec zwolniony hamulec i obracac sie zgodnie z wiatrem, w przeciwym razie moment zginajacy moze byc większy od momentu równowagi.
ther is nothing dangerouse about this im an ironworker also if they didnt let the crane weathervane it could cause it to topple due to the stress the wind places on the cranes boom.
on the weekend crane operators let the cab spin, so energy of the wind gets dissapated, if the cab was 'locked' the tower of the crane would twist and possibly fall. get it greenhorns? also wind at 200ft up is 10x the wind at ground level.
you dont get it do you?? YOURE A FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG you suck balls at life, so fuck off
Capitol letters then repetition and now capitols with letter repetition. Wow! What a loser you are! You're starting to bore me now my poor pathetic meat head friend. I'm not sure where you can go from here. Maybe give me some for thumbs down.
My office was in the brown building right next to the cab of the crane when this was happening. They explained to us that this is necessary in order for the crane to not fall over in such high winds. The workers were gone, the cab was empty and they forgot to take the chains off. So when it first started spinning, it knocked out a lot of the windows on the 39th floor! The video I took from my camera phone is in the video responses.
That is cool!.. scary but cool! I'd hate to of been stuck on that damn thing. I'd been like lord please make it stop lol Imagine if someone was and when they got'em out the whole thing be messed with vomit. One hella ride for sure.
Think thats scary? In Seattle or Chicago there was an incident with windowwashers. The wind was blowing the HUGE platform (they was cleaning a skyscraper) and it was flying and twisting, hit the side of the building 5+ times. They were all rescued.
the crane isnt blowing in the wind like that unless its caught in a really freaky wind blowing cyclonic which i seriously doubt. being an operator myself the only reason for a crane to spin like this is so we can apply grease to the slew ring (the part that turns the crane) We'd normally get a 2nd person to apply the grease in this ring while we keep slewing around to spread it evenly.or the driver is bored (which happens a lot up there)or he fell asleep with his hand on the control!
i agreee malswan28. im an operator too but the crane does appear to be slewing a bit too quick to be greasin the slew ring. ive often been spun close to 360 by the wind but NEVER a full circle, let alone a few full revaloutions. i reckon the driver is just bored and havin a laugh!!
ur as green as grass boy!! its called the 'weathervane' effect. and im an ironworker,u shud know better.. or have u just never looked up at the end of the day?
I work in the CBD in Melbourne, Australia and we have one of those adding more levels to a carpark next door. It was cool, they closed off the street and used a mobile crane to construct 2nd, larger crane (the base was still a truck but it could not just pack up and drive off, it took a full day to assemble). Then once the 2nd crane was built, they used THAT crane to build one like in this video. I'm on the 15th floor and the cabin is about the same height. Must be hella scary!
that crane was in downtown seattle wa that video was taking one week after the 210 footer fell over in bellevue wa after that nothin but tower cranes on the news...
They let it do that so that it won't break in a large wind. It is safer for it to swing around than to fight against the wind and possibly have a structure failure.
I am a rigger for a tower crane in Seattle and trust me, this is normal...the biggest problem with a tower crane is it's ability to DROP a VERY heavy load on the guys below...since you live in downtown Seattle, do a Google search on the technology of the tower crane, and you will find that what I say is true... BTW, w/o a tower crane you would not have your cool B'Town apt. that you shot this from... we are INSTRUMENTAL in the building of big projects...
If they didint do that, they would buckle and fall over. They do this with piers on the water, but a different way, not to spin, but to move along with the wind, so they arent stiff, but moving.
I am a tower crane operator of 9 years and theres no chance anything could go wrong even if the crane was stuck in the middle of a wind tunnel/vortex. The worst thing that could happen is the main power cable through the slewing ring could twist so much it would snap. That would all happen inside the tower not causing any risk to the buildings or the general public. Also most newly built machines have a splitter in the slew ring so the crane can spin around as many times as it would like to.
this couldnt hurt anybody ... if the slew brake was put on then all of the force would be shifted to one place .. it would never fall over because of wind. i know sometimes these machines are badly designed but come on .. they do test this kind of stuff
they are actualy designed to do this even if there is a vortex just imagine the consequences if the crane had breaks which forced the wind to blow it over instead
You are right about the fact that Tower Cranes are designed to weather vane, however this Crane is not doing this, if it was the Jib would be pointing in the direction that the wind was blowing.
The adjacent buildings to the Crane are causing the wind to Vortex around the Crane which is why it is spinning. Certainly not normal and potentially dangerous
Hey, Wardieboy, do not try a scare people I have been driving tower cranes for year. In the UK we call it "in free slew" brakes are disengaged. It will weathervein in the direction of the wind. I drove one in Switzerland building a ski centre on a montain, got cought in winds of 100mph. It still stood.

In high wind conditions the crane operators put the crane in "neutral" and let it weather vein. If they did not do this a collapse would occur.
tdh10 2 years ago
The area where that crane is looks like it may be prone to vertical vortex from wind hitting the buildings.
