@jacker1768 I didn't surface often. I used a lot of the big explosives. No earthquake. I figure that the chances of an earthquake must be a function of how many squares of dirt is left

no earthquakes. Earthquakes only take place after you drop off resources that are mined. I wanted to actually see if an earthquake would happen after I cleared the whole screen, but one never came.

a few hours - I left the game on in the background for a few days and played 10 or 20 minutes at a time. Most of it wasn't drilling but was with the big bombs.

Hard to say -- I'd say maybe 3 hours. I left the game on in the background for a couple days. 10 mins here, 20 minutes there of digging and then it was done.
