Notre Dame then chickened out of playing a rematch with Miami in the Fiesta Bowl (even thought they were ranked 1 & 2), opting instead to face West Virginia, who had beaten no one. The Irish knew they got lucky as helll in South Bend and wanted no part of Miami on a neutral field.

Looking very forward to the Sun Bowl. Hard to believe this matchup has been 20 yrs in the making. I was stationed in Okinawa for the '88 game and had to wake up at 2AM to watch the game on AFRTS. Missed the '90, I was in the Persian Gulf for Desert Shield / Desert Storm. The '88 game is greatest ND victory in my lifetime. The '73 Sugar Bowl is a close second, beating Alabama 24-23 for the National Championship.

Was at this game. The interesting thing about it was just how easily ND dominated UM in the first half. ND had their way with Miami. In the second half ND did what a whole bunch of teams do when they are up a bunch of points and they played defensive football. It was easy for Miami to catch up. The thing teams need to learn is NEVER give up the attack. When the other team is down. Look for blood not safety.

I remember this game. Notre Dame then chickened out of playing a rematch with Miami in the Fiesta Bowl (even thought they were ranked 1 & 2), opting instead to face West Virginia, who had beaten no one. The Irish knew they got lucky as helll in South Bend and wanted no part of Miami on a neutral field.

Looking very forward to the Sun Bowl. Hard to believe this matchup has been 20 yrs in the making. I was stationed in Okinawa for the '88 game and had to wake up at 2AM to watch the game on AFRTS. Missed the '90, I was in the Persian Gulf for Desert Shield / Desert Storm. The '88 game is greatest ND victory in my lifetime. The '73 Sugar Bowl is a close second, beating Alabama 24-23 for the National Championship.

This was probably the greatest Irish team in the schools history. Really! This was one of the greatest football games in history. I personally though Miami's Cleveland Gary knee was down on that play at the one yard line when they called a fumble and the Irish recovered. Nonetheless, the Irish won and eventually wone the National Title. All of the negative comments from the fans comes with the territory.

Baloney. I was standing 4ft from the goal post. Someone from ND swatted his arm and the ball was coming out as he was on his way down. His fingertips were still on the ball when it hit the turf , but he did not have posession. Today's instant replaywouldhave confirmed the call or at the very least, proved inconclusive to overturn the call.

Was at this game. The interesting thing about it was just how easily ND dominated UM in the first half. ND had their way with Miami. In the second half ND did what a whole bunch of teams do when they are up a bunch of points and they played defensive football. It was easy for Miami to catch up. The thing teams need to learn is NEVER give up the attack. When the other team is down. Look for blood not safety.

Even the play-by-play announcers on that day stated replay clearly indicated Miami did not score. i am neither ND nor Miami fan (Michigan is the REAL UM) and i recogize ND won. @yourfilthy...Criminals led to Miami being good from the mid 80's to the early 90's. One summer 16 Hurricanes spent there vacation in jail, not for innocent juvenile mistakes, but for drive by shootings and armed robbery. But they were still back to play when the fall rolled around.

22 years later, it'll be on in Chi town. I don't see them choosing to continue the series, there's still bad feelings on both sides 22 years later. It'll be interesting to see when these two talented teams play in Soldier's field, home of a lot of Irish fans, if the series will continue until 2016 like so many hope, It will be a battle......... go Irish. The love for the hatred is not lost. ND won the last two out of three.
