Success in a war is gained primarily when you've defeated the regime you're fighting against (eg-Saddam Hussein, Taliban, etc); and secondly, when you've won the hearts of the people of that nation. To do that you first have to thrown down the regime which binds/oppresses the people. Then you have to build an infrastructure which allows for democratic rule to take root and flourish. When that's done, you can claim final American victory.

@Josef12056 Just to make things clear, at least 90% of all German casualties were on the eastern front. Normandy landing wasn't to beat the germans - it was to ensure the soviets wouldn't take all Europe. Against germans, Soviets did all the fighting, though you did well supplying them.
@Jairion The most German casualties were at Stalingrad. Actually the second front was demanded by Stalin himself! Remember that IF the French and British troops had attacked Germany in 1939 when Germany was pounding Poland, then it would have been another story altoghether. Because then the Germans would have had 2 fronts on the continent, and wouldn't have used all their best divisions against Poland.

"it" refers to the FACT that bullets don't travel through water, google it. Unless you are 10 feet from the water, bullets disintegrate when they enter water. And we weren't alone. 1000s of Australians, New Zealanders, South Koreans, and Brits also fought. The US never suffered a military defeat. Numerous US victories forced the commies back to the peace table. After our withdrawal, they broke the cease-fire and defeated the ARVN. They never, ever defeated US, Aussie, Kiwi, or British soldiers.

I LIVED in Vietnam for 4 bloody years, i visited the Cu Chi Tunnel systems which the uniformed armies used to apply GUERILLA TACTICS against American Forces. Although it may seem like the melancholic music might not fit with the gore, it actually does. They are two contrasting things that fit together. The music enhances the mood and feel of the scene and brings about feelings that could relate to the situation and to the feelings the young men might have felt then and there. The music does give it a dream like feel but in reality the events are like a dream in a way. Good job :)
This scene is so brutally realistic that music can only cheapen it. If you need music to add to the emotional effect of a scene like this then you truly have been desensitized by modern media (video games, internet death videos, etc). I like Spielberg because he assumes his audience is intelligent enough to know when to be horrified/saddened during serious films without musical cues indicating how to feel. The result: smart people love his movies as they are, dumb people add enya tracks.

"it" refers to the FACT that bullets don't travel through water, google it. Unless you are 10 feet from the water, bullets disintegrate when they enter water. The German machine guns were a hundred+ yards away, firing at an angle, so there's no way they would kill a soldier a few inches underwater. America was only formed about 200 years ago. It did not win either the Cold or Vietnamse wars, the latter became a war of attrition, which America was bound to win. However it cost millions of dollars and never achieved any material gains. They were eventually forced to pull out due to mounting casulties and no sucess likley. America cannot wipe any country off the map, their time as the leading world power may have collapsed with Wall Street, due to the greed of unregulated capitalism.

Maybe the support at home would have been greater if America didnt suffer 58,000 deaths and 153,000 casualties. I'll agree it was NOT 100% military defeat, but neither was lost support a 100% reason for retreating. You left because it was a guerilla war, one that the government agreed couldnt be won and if you cant win a war, technically its a defeat.
Middle East - America and Britain are the main contributors but dont deny others like Australia, France and the swiss please, they had men die.

No, it wasn't a guerilla war. The VC played almost no role at all except to terrorize civilians. We fought the uniformed North Vietnamese Army. And we weren't alone. 1000s of Australians, New Zealanders, South Koreans, and Brits also fought. The US never suffered a military defeat. Numerous US victories forced the commies back to the peace table. After our withdrawal, they broke the cease-fire and defeated the ARVN. They never, ever defeated US, Aussie, Kiwi, or British soldiers.

I LIVED in Vietnam for 4 bloody years, i visited the Cu Chi Tunnel systems which the uniformed armies used to apply GUERILLA TACTICS against American Forces. And what the fuck are u on about other forces went to war in Vietnam!!?? America was the only country to go to war with N.Vietnamese - or too my knowledge. Proof that "1,000's" of others joined in the fighting please mate.

There was a treaty called SEATO sort of like NATO. Australia,And the Republic of Korea supplied combat units. I can't remember the other nations - the ROK Capital Division for one fought well in Vietnam fora while. Australia supplied special forces at least.

Australia alone deployed over 15,000 men to Vietnam, most of them infantry. It wasn't highly publicized, but they were involved in lots of heavy fighting, as were the Kiwis and South Koreans. British warships patrolled the coast, etc. Just because you haven't heard of it doesn't make it any less true. You probably didn't know that the Brazilian Air Force flew hundreds of combat missions against the Germans in Italy in 1944-45, for instance.

Actually i did know about the Brazilian airforce, and it is speculated the SAS from britain were sent to fight in Vietnam. Reading wikipedia your right other troops were sent to Vietnam from Australia, NZ, Thailand, S.Korea e.t.c, learn something new everyday ey. With due respect to the fighting men and women in Afghanistan, Iraq and the other places in conflict, the success of a war is not measured in the amount of bodybags against the amount of dead "enemy". It has more to do with winning terrain and having success in your missions. You can win ALL the battles, but you can still lose the war. An interesting fact is that Great Britain lost an entire army in Afghanistan and when they went back stayed there fighting till 1947. Russia tried too, but..

Saving Private Ryan gives us a small perspective what hell war truly is. Why do free men put themselves in harm's way especially when it's not for glory or plunder, but ideals that defy description.
Todays soldiers still line up to go into harm's way for us when we don't seem to be all that graceful. God forgive us for ignoring the obvious and thinking mostly about ourselves.

This is a really good video.
The song gives it a very great effect.
Although it may seem like the melancholic music might not fit with the gore, it actually does. They are two contrasting things that fit together. The music enhances the mood and feel of the scene and brings about feelings that could relate to the situation and to the feelings the young men might have felt then and there. The music does give it a dream like feel but in reality the events are like a dream in a way. Good job :)

This scene is so brutally realistic that music can only cheapen it. If you need music to add to the emotional effect of a scene like this then you truly have been desensitized by modern media (video games, internet death videos, etc). I like Spielberg because he assumes his audience is intelligent enough to know when to be horrified/saddened during serious films without musical cues indicating how to feel. The result: smart people love his movies as they are, dumb people add enya tracks.

Mr Meter are you aware that veterans of this war were brought to see the preview of this film. Afterwards several of them required counselling as they felt the film was so realistic as to the true horrors they faced that everything had come flooding back. Therefore what you say may be true but this film came damn close. I do not believe it was made to entertain, but so that we would realise the true extent of these mens great sacrifice.
