My dad served on Hood until his transfer to HMS Kylemore, just a month before Hood's sinking. He lost many good friends. Six months later, Kylemore met her fate too, at the hands of German Dorniers, & my dad was one of only 8 survivors. He was awarded the DSM for courageous conduct during & after the sinking. The medal was pinned on his chest by Lord Mountbatten.
I wouldn't want the Bismarck or Titanic raised if the technology existed. They're graves. Leave them be. That's like exhuming a casket for nothing. The US left the Arizona at the bottom of Pearl Harbor and I respect that decision. It's a grave so let the crew rest in peace.
@jonesy97 the bismarck was hit bye 2 torpedos. The first one hit the thick armor and didn´t leave a hole and the second one hit the rowing so no torpedo holes =)
Cool...is that like a regular plastic model modified to look like the wreck? I never would have thought of that! I have a special place in my heart for the Bismarck. I read the abridged version of Robert Ballard's book when I was in the 3rd Grade, and have been into military stuff ever since. I can still remember looking through the book, and thinking "wow...why didn't I realize how cool all this army stuff is" LOL (I didn't know the difference between "army" and "navy" and "military" yet!)
your sick.. how many men gave there life on this ship I would like to meet you. You know nothing of loss.. Go play with your toys Very Sad Get a Life......
Not to mention it weighs 3 times more prolly, due to armor.
Raising would be easier though, as Bismarck has better structural strenght than titanic. Depth is not big difference and problem. Problem is weight and the cost of raising.
Very nice .. impressive all around. Will never happen but the Bismarck is in a condition where I would love to see her raised one day. Course my fascination with wrecks always leads me to that conclusion.
A nice display of the ship's condition. She must have capsized and thus the turrents fell away, and managed to right herself before striking bottom. The outcome might have been quite different if she's not lost steerage.

Nice video; still amazing that the ship was found still upright; many sunken ships turned over as they sank to the bottom.

Whats with the flat stern of the Bismarck?
Jeff12798 11 months ago
nice................
Shakimetalmaniac 11 months ago
just curious, but wasn't the whole part of the stern broken off as well? Not a huge portion like Titanic...but a good sized chunk.

To answer that question: Yes! Although part of her stern is sheared off, she's relativly intact & up-right on the bottom.

Raising the Bismarck would be impossible.
She lies 3 miles down, 1/2 mile more than the Titanic.

actually it does. the weit is true. not to mention titanic has been under water 97 yars and the bismark has beern under water for a little over 70
hifallon 2 years ago
both ships are probaly very unstable as well and bismarck has shell holes and about 50-100 feet of the stern gone
apollo1176 2 years ago
Actually only about 35 feet of Bismarck's stern broke off; 80% of the rear deck swastika is still visible.
