Can you stop being so brilliant at summing up exactly what I think and feel about these episodes? I keep watching your eps and I don't think I've disagreed with you yet. Gonna watch another one.
What did you think of the whole seeing more of the TARDIS interior? because I really liked it, it gave me a feeling of an actual ship rather than one room with steps that lead to the backstage of a TV set. Personally I'd like to see an episode where they get stuck in the TARDIS and we get to see all the kinds of rooms like the library, the swimming pool etc. Though I'm slightly worried that idea of being trapped in the TARDIS was already done in this episode. Anyway I agree with everything :)
I think Matt Smith is a brilliant Doctor. He can very well pull of the happy, goofy and funny Doctor. However I do think that there is a certain aspect of the Doctor that he just can't pull off. The Powerful Lonely Timelord man that is sad and feels guilty about the loss of his entire people, yadiyadiyah. For instance in this episode he finds all the Cubes and well.. Nothing else happens. Maybe that's more due to the script but well..
I liked The Doctor's Daughter as well as The Doctor's Wife
I didn't think I would like Jenny, for instance, but I did; I thought, even though her character would need a lot of work she was 'worthy' to get a bit more into. However after the anticlimax of not letting her die, but letting her fly in to space, like her 'dad' they haven't done ANYTHING with it since then! That's the only really bad part about that episode
watch the episode again and listen when the doctor fixes nephews voice thing and the distress call starts playing that sounds exactly like Christopher Eccleston
Thankfully I'm not into Soaps at all, so to that end I don't recognise Suranne Jones from Coronation Street. I do know her however from The Sarah Jane Adventures story 'Mona Lisa's Revenge' where she portrayed Mona Lisa.
I totally agree that this episode is beautiful. About the end scene between The Doctor and Sexy, it had to be cut. Matt Smith is a great actor but there is no way he can get that worked up that quick. There has to be about 30 seconds cut from the middle of that scene. I'm assuming that they did this in one take. Scenes like this are so emotionally draining that the first take is usually the best. So, if there is a directors cut, I hope they show the entire scene.
i recently got series 5 volume 4 on blu ray, and vincent and the doctor, and the lodger had one or two extended scenes in them, so i wonder if the doctors wife will?
If Gaiman did not write this, I think this could have been terrible. the only way this story could work would be with a fan of both the classic and the modern series... Which he is.
I didn't enjoy this one, it was ok but it had so much potential to be a ground breaking caper in the Doctor who story but it didn't live up to it. Nothing much happened and i didn't feel much of a threat by the house but The TARDIS part was good and there were some nice lines but honestly killing rory is getting boring.
relief i feel when he comes back. So when he dies for good, without the relief of him coming back to life I'll be sad as hell, especially after how BAMF he was in the newest episode
i think Neil also said there was a scene in the original script in the TARDIS pool but that had be to cut because of budget. Also, this episode was originally set to replace The Lodger as the 'pre season finale' episode but it got pushed back because of budget as well. i would have loved to see this as an hour long special and allow Neil to write to his full potential! And i actually will care a hell of a lot if Rory dies to real because the thing for me about his repeated deaths is the...
For me, The Rory/Amy scenes could have been so much better than they were. They were creepy. Darkly lit. Threatening. And I liked the fact that House was messing with Amy. I like the 'Kill Amy' room - very much - that was cool, but why oh why does Rory have to be dead? AGAIN? Old Rory accusing Amy of leaving him waiting was good. Let's have more of that. Let's have Rory stalking Amy around the Tardis. Brilliant. But this death - you're right, if Rory ever dies for real I. just. won't. care.
@DobbyJunior Damn right! Jekyll was really good. The main reason for the clip though was because loads of other critics kept on praising the "kissing, only there's a winner" line for saying how original it was =P So it was mainly a "look guys, this is where it actually came from."
@MrTARDISreviews Yeah, I could see that's what you were doing. Even though Gaiman wrote the script, it's coming from the same mind. I'm sure the Moff tweaked his script a little. You know how Chris Carter did with Stephen King's episode of The X-Files (if you watched that show). I'm sure nothing goes out without the Moff's approval. I laughed at the joke. It was funny and genius! Great job! :)
Oh yeah, forgot to say that I loved the character development with Rory and Amy too. Those characters...bother me. Mainly because they are married, and yet Amy rarely shows any affection for Rory but patronises him and prefers to be with the Doctor wherever possible. As a marriage they should be a partnership but I have never really felt it, nor in season 5 where they were just engaged. I think they need more onscreen time with just the 2of them, even if it's in weird situations.
Loved this episode. Every new Doctor Who viewer soon learns that the Tardis is not a machine but a sentient being, so personifying it makes perfect sense to me. 'Sexy' just seems the most natural partner for the Doctor. :)
By the way, the intro was excellent. Your bin has gone to have the most amazing adventures in time! :D
I like your modification of the TARDIS acronym. I would have said "Time And Relative Dimensions IS Sexy", but then again I can't type properly. Also, Trilby's are still cool.
Honestly I loved this episode. I admit, I was rather frustrated because I had myself all psyched up for Romana, but I overcame that quickly because it was just such a COOL episode. As for the sort of "drop in the bucket" Time Lord plot point... I have a feeling that may be dealt with further down the line. I just have a sneaking suspicion we're not quite done with that plot just yet.
I have to agree with most of your review, but the idea of making it a two parter would not have worked. In the new series the two parters are about a solid 60 minutes of good story padded out to the 90 minute broadcast (45 x 2). This story was just long enough to tell the tale. Amy & Rory started to get redundant fast & more would not have been better.
This was the best episode since Vincent.
I even liked the Dirk Gently "Zen Navigation" reference.
Seconding everything you said. Especially the emotional bits. To see a critic showing his "normal human being" side is heartwarming. :)
Also, glad to know you liked Gaiman's work on it. I think his fanboy-ness shows a lot throughout the whole story, but in a good way.
But actually I'd thought you might have a lot more to critisize about the story. Some moments seemed a little too incoherent to me. The problem of time restrictions does make sense though.
i love your reviews. i watch your review every week and can see so much of my own opinion in them. please keep making these, i look forward to them x x
there was one part of the review which i thought was a little harsh, when you said if your a complete loser coronation street, I get it you don't like coronation street but I do, likeing a soap opera dosen't make me more of a loser anymore then someone liking the phatom menace, sorry man, just felt it was a little harsh to call someone a loser because they like a show that many others may not.
@thelashers Actually that was a cynical joke i made. My family are regular watchers of Coronation Street (especially my mum who has been watching it since the early 80s) and whenever i'm at home (i don't have a tele at uni) i watch it if there isn't anything else on. So why it may seem like a jab at people who like Coronation Street just remember that i like the show as well =P
good review but i wish it were longer... wait. never mind :)
good review I've onli jus started watching you and I really enjoy your comedy and reviewing technique. I do think they're pushing it with Rory but in this episode it made a bit more sense than the last episode. I also wonder if this episode could have worked with any other Doctor?
The Script for this episode faced a lot of cuts too, because it was too long or too expensive. I completely agree that this should have been a two parer or at the very least an hour special, and it seems the Neil Gaiman may have written almost enough for a two parted.
Also the scenes with Amy and Rory in the Tardis, being chased by House were apparently going to be a lot more interesting with more rooms, and more focus on Rory, but because of budget, it kept being changed in to what we got.
TRYIN TA MASTERBATE!!! For me the episode wasnt good... sorry guys... But ill never be able to see the tardis in the same way ever again. With the whole i love you bit... ITS A MACHINE!!! I mean yes the machine may be alive... but if you ask me its alive in the same way all machines are. Sorry but i dont believe the tardis is a woman... or can become a woman. Omg my DVD players a woman... she's hot.
@bestdrwho In fairness i did write and film that section on Thursday. 2 days before the episode was broadcast and all i knew about this episode was that the Doctor and Idris would build a TARDIS out of scrap =P
No offence Mr Tardis but how can you possibly review an episode that hasn't been broadcast yet? I realise it all takes time to put it all together, like film it, script it and finally edit it.
I am not having a go at you and I understand that you are busy with you're Uni studies etc. and all the time you have is important and in short supply!
If it no longer fits then bin it and re-shoot? I too wondered about that comment you made on that issue but apart from that you do good!
@punksterdaddy Oh no, i didn't do the ENTIRE review before the episode aired. Just the opening junk TARDIS sketch with my friend Jamie. I saw clips from Blue Peter that a junk TARDIS was being made and there were loads of pics and videos about it online, so i thought i would save time by doing the opening sketch (with no critical analysis) before the episode aired. My opinions on the episode and writing, recording, editing the main review are all done after at least 2 viewings of the episode.
I know you didn't write the whole review before you saw it... If you did then I would say yer own construction of the Tardis went really rather well?
Anyway it doesn't really matter, at least you put yer efforts into doing something like this while people like me just nit pick at it. No offence meant... I do enjoy the reviews, I am a born critic of film/tv/music and wish that I could do what you do? I'll just stick to writing for now, sigh.
Nice review and I do know what you mean. The show could have easily been a two parter with all the depth that was there but not used! How sad that it wasn't. This episode was really good and the voice of HOUSE was superb but there was no mention through confidential of who played it? At the end of "The Doctor's Wife," it said 'Michael Sheen,' in the credits but no mention of him elsewhere?
I totally understand where people are coming from where they think that Idris (the TARDIS) looks like Helena Bonham Carter, but I think she looks a lot more like Elizabeth Hurley!
Be careful mate, you might be accused of murder in one of 'he who must not be named' videos! As some of your friends here call him! I saw that man dead on the floor at 1:02 ;)
The pace of the episode was WAY TOO FAST - I'm in total agreement. Just when I started to get into the groove, the episode changed track.
I'm not as in love with the episode though, but maybe that's my Canadian ears taking too long to translate the staccato dialogue, so I seem to be a second or two behind the jokes, then BOOM there's another switch!
Matt Smith was robbed - we have 3 seasons of angst from David Tennant, and this could've been one for Matt.
Hehe, when me and my mates were on about this episode in class, one of my mates said 'I'm not the only one who found the tardis lady fit?'.... We all agreed.... ;P
I actually rofled when I saw Stephen Moffat wrote 'No' in response to Rory dieing xD
You're not the only one who's roryist it seems ;')
I really tried to watch the shortned version of the review, but after a few minutes I was like 'why should I watch this one, when I can see the 19 minute one again.' So I rewatched the longer one. great job by the way, it's nice that even though you're busy you still manage to make thorough reviews
PS. wth is with killing Rory all the time? and are they trying to make 'i'm a nurse' his catchphrase...?or is Moffat implying that this is going to make more sense when the series ends...
I'm starting to think there's a reason for Rory dying in every episode....I don't no what but it's gone past a joke, maybe there's a real reason behind him dying in every effing episode...
When you wrote that comment "I really wanted to love it" I was horrified and scared since this is such a great episode. But I actually get what you're saying with that and I actually agree a little bit. It's a tiny bit rushed but TBH this is an episode that just needs to be watched several times with a different lens each time. I also really, really want a director's cut of this episode (Series 6 DVD release?). As an episode this is probably one of the best IMO of the new Who (2005-2011) so far!
What's hilarious is that Will just happens to have a companion of his own called Jamie. I hope he features in more reviews.
Though I disagree with some points (Gridlock and TLE looking good, but I have a grudge against a lot of Series Three in general and that the story was too short), I'm in agreement that this story is excellent. I might even be more generous and give it a 10, but that's just me.
And I'm definitely getting bored with killing Rory. Please give the guy a break.
@someone332 Just a personal thing really, I can't stand a lot of it. Smith and Jones was probably my favourite RTD opener and HN/TFoB and Blink, whilst both overrated even with the main protaganist either a different character or mostly absent (which if you look at it, is kind of sad, considering I dislike this particular series) are still amazing. That and I hate the finale, probably my least favourite story ever made and then I dislike the rest.
@TrilbyMenetti lol. Actually, for me, if I ignore the "God Doctor" thing, the "think Doctor" thing, and the "Human Toclafane" thing, I think the finale is actually really good. But those three things are... really the bulk of the last part. Not really.
You think that Blink is overrated? I appreciate you're opinion and I do realise that we are not all going to like the same, but I thought BLINK was the best episode of that whole series. I would go as far as to say that it is one of the best EVER written, since Doctor Who returned!
I don't know all the facts on this next point but I believe that one of the reasons Steven Moffatt was asked to do his current job is because of his writing of Blink.
@punksterdaddy I think it's overrated (even though I DO think it is good), because I just don't think it's the BEST episode of Doctor Who ever. I don't like Sally Sparrow as a character, and I think the overuse of paradoxes is a factor I absolutely despise about Moffat's writing. That's why I think The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances is the best Moffat episode. It's clever, witty, and it doesn't have paradoxes. The story is tightly written, and beautifully creepy.
Awesome!!! I loved it so much I loved the beginning :D I loved that line where he said "It's a bed with a ladder" lol that was awesome!!!! I loved this episode and that's a good rate of this episode
Can you stop being so brilliant at summing up exactly what I think and feel about these episodes? I keep watching your eps and I don't think I've disagreed with you yet. Gonna watch another one.

@drwhomasterfan But the TARDIS is more than a machine Joel, it's like a person. It's persuading and encouraging! :)

You really need to learn to pay attention dear boy....... Matt Smith made a Tardis console form Tardis parts not your common scrap....
bestdrwho 9 months ago
@bestdrwho In fairness i did write and film that section on Thursday. 2 days before the episode was broadcast and all i knew about this episode was that the Doctor and Idris would build a TARDIS out of scrap =P
MrTARDISreviews 9 months ago
@MrTARDISreviews
I too wondered about that comment you made on that issue but apart from that you do good!
punksterdaddy 9 months ago 2
@punksterdaddy Oh no, i didn't do the ENTIRE review before the episode aired. Just the opening junk TARDIS sketch with my friend Jamie. I saw clips from Blue Peter that a junk TARDIS was being made and there were loads of pics and videos about it online, so i thought i would save time by doing the opening sketch (with no critical analysis) before the episode aired. My opinions on the episode and writing, recording, editing the main review are all done after at least 2 viewings of the episode.
MrTARDISreviews 9 months ago
@MrTARDISreviews
LOL
I know you didn't write the whole review before you saw it... If you did then I would say yer own construction of the Tardis went really rather well?
Anyway it doesn't really matter, at least you put yer efforts into doing something like this while people like me just nit pick at it. No offence meant... I do enjoy the reviews, I am a born critic of film/tv/music and wish that I could do what you do? I'll just stick to writing for now, sigh.
p.s.I loved the Corrie comment

I love you! i couldnt agree more i really want this to be a two or three parter or a serial like in the old days with 6 or 8 parts!
tenfangirl 9 months ago
Nice review and I do know what you mean. The show could have easily been a two parter with all the depth that was there but not used! How sad that it wasn't. This episode was really good and the voice of HOUSE was superb but there was no mention through confidential of who played it? At the end of "The Doctor's Wife," it said 'Michael Sheen,' in the credits but no mention of him elsewhere?
After pirates, the Doctor returns to greatness.
just needed...? it needed..?

Someone needs to make a Rory Kill Counter.

I hated the first three episodes, so this was a nice return to form, though I agree the themes should have been explored more given the bold choice.

1:01 - 1:02, trying to cover up something? 'ey, lol!
Well, at least you got rid of the evidence now. You should kill him in every episode from now on!!!

I've been to that restaraunt and speaking of the hitchiers guide to the galaxy, your intro song is from it, isn't it.

Yes that is the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.
It is a brilliant tune and it is well placed in the movie version of it.

Am I the only one who doesn't care that they keep showing Rory dead? Not that I don't like Rory, but it really doesn't bother me.

wasn't this story 50 mins long , so it was longer than normal story anyway . Brilliant story and a brilliant review .

Matt Smith was robbed - we have 3 seasons of angst from David Tennant, and this could've been one for Matt.
anglomediaphile 9 months ago
Hehe, when me and my mates were on about this episode in class, one of my mates said 'I'm not the only one who found the tardis lady fit?'.... We all agreed.... ;P
I actually rofled when I saw Stephen Moffat wrote 'No' in response to Rory dieing xD
You're not the only one who's roryist it seems ;')
ash356 9 months ago

As an episode this is probably one of the best IMO of the new Who (2005-2011) so far!
forrestorocks 9 months ago
Dude, it was a TARDIS junkyard, so of course you could make a TARDIS out of a bin you could find there!
Love your vids.
DCMarvel2009 9 months ago
What's hilarious is that Will just happens to have a companion of his own called Jamie. I hope he features in more reviews.
Though I disagree with some points (Gridlock and TLE looking good, but I have a grudge against a lot of Series Three in general and that the story was too short), I'm in agreement that this story is excellent. I might even be more generous and give it a 10, but that's just me.
And I'm definitely getting bored with killing Rory. Please give the guy a break.
TrilbyMenetti 9 months ago
@TrilbyMenetti Really? I found S3 to be my favorite season. Even if it has a finale with some flaws that bug me to death.
BUT, Blink IS overrated.
someone332 9 months ago
@someone332 Just a personal thing really, I can't stand a lot of it. Smith and Jones was probably my favourite RTD opener and HN/TFoB and Blink, whilst both overrated even with the main protaganist either a different character or mostly absent (which if you look at it, is kind of sad, considering I dislike this particular series) are still amazing. That and I hate the finale, probably my least favourite story ever made and then I dislike the rest.
But this is going off-topic. :D
TrilbyMenetti 9 months ago
@TrilbyMenetti lol. Actually, for me, if I ignore the "God Doctor" thing, the "think Doctor" thing, and the "Human Toclafane" thing, I think the finale is actually really good. But those three things are... really the bulk of the last part. Not really.
someone332 9 months ago
@TrilbyMenetti The Master is the redeeming factor of the season finale for me.
someone332 9 months ago
@someone332
Its my fav episode as it stands alone.
punksterdaddy 9 months ago 3
@punksterdaddy I think it's overrated (even though I DO think it is good), because I just don't think it's the BEST episode of Doctor Who ever. I don't like Sally Sparrow as a character, and I think the overuse of paradoxes is a factor I absolutely despise about Moffat's writing. That's why I think The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances is the best Moffat episode. It's clever, witty, and it doesn't have paradoxes. The story is tightly written, and beautifully creepy.
