I bought this game in 1997 or 98. The classic version is the only one I liked playing, the others are bad. I also own Jeff Minters 'Defender II' for the Atari ST which is far better than this!
This was an okay game.I was never a big fan of the original game so it ahad limited appeal. I've always thought a first person perspective would be pretty cool.
I agree, Defender Plus was the best version. Defender 2000 had great potential. I remember how much I looked forward to it. This was the only game I purchased as soon as it was released, I might have pre-ordered it. The 2000 version is flawed because the icons are too big for the screen, the screen scrolls up/down and left/right. D2k would be great redone on a sytem today with a Widescreen format and so it doesn't scroll up/down.
While the 2000 mode in this game can be hard, it's a lot of fun once you get the hang of it. The music on this game was great and the 2D graphics superb of course. I especially like Defender Plus that is only shown for a brief time in the video.

Jeff was actually FORCED to make the ship bigger by Atari, because they wanted to showcase the Jag's graphical power with an oversized ship. :P

The side scrolling was too fast, and once you had AI ships and humanoids fighting for you, then the game was too easy.

The ship is way too big! If it was smaller and less goofy looking, it would have been more appealing to play like the original
