  • Is it real when you see like gladiator movies and Greek movies where someone swings a one handed spear arround like it's some long sword and like leap with an overhead attack over someone's shield, etc.? Is the spear actually a weapon that was used with a shield in melee like that? Or just for "phalanx" formations? Or was it just thrown/dropped to free the hand for a sword / ax to be drawn?

  • Can you parry with a spear held in one hand? I'm having this discussion with a friend.

  • @ValerioVersace well of course you can, though it is difficult. With a one handed spear, you need to hold it in a specific way to counteract the force on your wrist. There is no way you can hold it out and parry without it getting knocked around and twisting in your grip... but you hold it in close to your body and it allows you to brace the back end of the shaft with your body or your lower arm/elbow... there is also a technique using the shield as a counterbrace against the shaft...

  • is there any around northern wv or pa

  • Not really @MrRomesdefender, but we have a few friends in Ohio and MIchegan... we've never gotten further east than Ohio.

  • @skallagrimm That would be pretty great. I got alot of stuff put into the viking thing already. But all my weapons are more for show, and "props" and such. They are not made for live combat, if the other person wants to continue to live that is. But yes, I would love to learn how to do it properly. :) Danke

  • Love the vids skallagrimm! Wish there was more in Indiana do you know of any groups in the Midwest close to Indianapolis?

  • @MoscowMadness As a matter of fact, I have a good friend in Indiana who would probably love the chance to train someone again. I'll pass your info on to him this weekend and let him know to contact you.

  • The single handed spear is actually very useful at close range and in the hands of a skilled fighter every bit as good as a sword in single combat. Do you lads ever use the shield as a weapon in its own right to hook or press your opponents shield out of the way?

  • No, I'd have to disagree. The single handed spear has enough disadvantages when used with a shield to make it far less effective than a sword in combat. It was, however, a very cheap form of weapon that everyone had so it was widely used. And using it with safety in mind takes away even more of it's effectiveness

I know we have a lot of vids, but have you watched more than a few? We use the shield as a weapon more than nearly anyone else... at least those trying to do steel combat safely.

  • I'll have to agree to differ on that one after seeing what some of the lads have been doing with single handed spear over the last few years, totally agree about losing effectiveness due to safety though.

I have unfortunatly only seen a couple of your clips so apologies if I've got the wrong impression!

  • Um.. actually if you read my comment, I didn't criticize your fightnig. I was just making a statement about the disadvantages a spearman has at close range. Spear is a ranged weapon. Very effective if the Shieldman stays at range he would get slaughterd by a spear. I am saying that if a sheild man rushes in close (near body to body contact) the spear man gets tied up and cant use the spear effectivly thus being beaten by the guy with the sheild and sword.. untwist your panties jackoff...

  • So now your explaining yourself.... to who. I know what you were trying to say, and I called it bullshit. You don't have to like it, but your opinion is flawed. And trying to explain how a spear vs. sword fight works to someone who has had more of them then years you've been alive is idiotic.

How 'bout I'll untwist your head, boy! ~ Come out and play!

  • really? do know anything about me? NO. I have fought with both. so go fuck yourself.. fyi, it is not that difficult for a swordman to tie up a spearman.

  • Go fuck myself? Really? I'd love to see how you fight homo.

Why don't you put up some of your fight vids....? Oh yeah, and playing with Bud-K swords in the backyard with your boyfriend doesn't count either.

  • IN real life the swordman would have won very quikly against a spear guy tlike this.. all he has do do is move in quickly and the spearman can do nothing..

  • You've never fought with either weapon so how the hell would you know, 'littnguy'? You don't have a clue.

  • Back in 1982 I would of stabbed right through that shield.

  • As a 1-on-1 weapon, a single-handed spear is OK, but a skilled swordman or axeman can close you down to insode the spear's effective range and gut you. On the other hand, in a shield wall it is probably the best weapon (just my opinion here). It has almost the reach of a 2-handed spear and is far more agile as well as allowing the user the protection of a mobile shield. You just pop shots onto the shoulders your opponents. The only major problem is you don't quite have the range of the 2h spear.

  • Something I was taught for single-handed spear was, using the underhand grip like in the vid, fake a shot at the shoulder of you opponent (this should make them raise their shield) then drop your arm and arc the spear around the outside of the shield to hit the leg. This tends to work against people with shortarms provided you can keep at your range and out of theirs.

  • Ah yes the high feint, now who might have showed you that I wonder? ;)

  • Ummm, no one showed it to me. It's one of those things you pick up by using a weapon enough, I guess. We are an independant group who learn from one another through practice, be it combat skills, blacksmithing, casting,..... you get the idea.

  • The comment was ment for Oddthetall as I know him (a bit) and am fairly sure I know who showed him the trick as he is annoyingly good at it!

  • Well single handed isn't that bad. Hoplites were master with them, using overhand attacks in a tight shield wall.

  • Exactly the problem I am having at the moment with my trainees. One of them has decided to specialize in single spear and shield, and has gotten himself repeatedly hit in the face!

I am a big fan of the two handed spear style, not such a fan of the single handed style.

  • So the boarspear is two-handed?

  • this is some awesome epicness going down!!! wat you boobs on about, giving little remarks about the armour, or spear length, wat the fuck!! shutup!

  • please...do this for me...stand mor left-forward so your shields further ahead of you then anything else...prop your right leg side ways behind you in a semi martial arts stance...hold the short spear over head in a jab stance...

  • your killing the reason for a spear...your shaft lenght is almost the exact same lenght as that sword...therefor your putting yourself in a bad place...if your going to use a short, go overhead with it, use your sheild to guard your upper body while keeping lower body out of range, heres a picture of what im talking about

  • since i cant post links, ill PM you it

  • Please, do this for me....upload some video of you fighting with it. I'm aware of what you mean but am intentionally not fighting with it that way. It's INTENTIONAL.

  • Wiking in st.wenceslaus helmet is not historical.

  • And I suppose cheek plates and horns are?

  • One of this viking has a repilcs of St waclaw tsech.
