Tragic thing at the time was that alot of black GIs in Vietnam were angry at Ali for refusing his induction. As if by suffering and dying with them he'd show some kind of warped solidarity. Misses the real issue. Few blacks in Nam were volunteers, many were drafted from the South. They were expected to die for a country by "fighting other poor people" in which many literally couldn't vote. Hah! "No taxation without representation." My black arse.

@tetrepak Malcolm X was initially in the NOI which is a separatist group. this documentary doesnt tell us that he left NOI because of that reason after he went on the muslim pilgramage to mecca and realised that islam is anti-racist/separatist. its why he was killed.ali left NOI and is now a proper muslim

@snentz Actually, thats a little wrong, Malcom X didn't leave the NOI because Islam is seperatist, but because the NOI were leading black people down a path which lead nowhere, he spoke about this in an interview 2 days before his assasination, he looked back on those times as being misguided. The leadership of the NOI had nothing to do with Islam,just used Islam as a cloak because the NOI's seperatism could not find a voice through "organised" Christianity, which was predominantly right wing.

@fauxsham Actually your comment also is a little wrong; Malcolm didn't just leave the NOI because it was leading people along a path that lead nowhere, he left because he was thrown out, and he himself said he pleaded and pleaded to be taken back, and would have gone back if he had been allowed to, and gave up on the notion only when he became convinced his enemies inside would never let him in. Malcolm left for good because he was kicked out. It's even in his autobiography.

When it comes to Malcolm, 2 books are must reads: His autobiography, & then the most credible authority on the events surrounding his rise and fall entitled "THE JUDAS FACTOR" by Karl Evanzz, which deals extensively with the inner workings of the NOI & proves it's infiltration by the FBI who learned of the death plot & were ordered to 'fan the flames', and let it happen.

Its a big part of our collective history, and has informed and influenced so much of our society, and I am just beginning (at 34!) to try to unpick the story a little, I'll have a look for those books you mentioned this weekend.
