This movie has a complete error in it in the first minute after the credits start, In the opening scene they show a lighthouse flashing on some rocks, well now that happens to be Portland head light house in cape elizabeth maine, and the whole story takes place on the opposite west coast, surprised no one caught that, they threw that in thinking no one would notice. I can back up what Im saying, because that lighthouse use to be my home for 3 years as a light keeper in the coast guard ! lol

I don't see why people say it was better than the book...I like the movie, the directing and acting were amazing! But I don't think it captured the power the book did. David Guterson's writing was astounding, and the monologues of each character really helped develop the plot. The movie had good writing and great directing but I don't think it matched the book. The book built suspense. For me it seemed like the movie wouldn't have made sense if I hadn't read the book...

Wow! I can't believe I am only now seeing this amazing film. This is 2010 and it was released in 1999. Better late than never. I must say that I am awed by this production. Simply an amazing film. Incredible storytelling. Film making at it's best. I've watched it twice now in 24 hours. I am stunned. I cannot believe I have not seen this before. Kudos.

This movie had me torn in two! I definitely wanted Hatsue to be with Ishmael, but at the same time, I knew that the kids needed their father. When I was younger, I hated how the story turned out, but as I've grown more mature, I've come to love this story. I understand now that love is never simple.

Great movie. I just watched it on AMC. Love is probably the most powerful force on earth because like unlike gravity we can break free from it. Love doesn't allow you to choose. Love won't always be for the better. Love can turn even the most decent human being on earth into the most bitter, wrathful, vengeful destitute soul that ever lived. I think if it isn't properly healed it can damage a person for life and I think we've all come something close to that.

The narrators voice for the trailor doesn't fit with this movie though. I think it would be more powerful without a narration-- the movie, images, and music speak for the movie.
