My Ancient Cowl workst for all head gear. it's nice. Also some giants are passive. Noteably the ones around the hot springs area. There's even a giant being all sad over his dead mammoth. I call him Sad Face Giant. And then I kill him and take his toe. And I think most wandering giants who don't have mammoths are passive too. But all the giants in camps and wandering the fields around whiterun are always aggressive.

The reason giants attack you is because your follower becomes aggressive towards the giant after the giant begins giving his warning signal/stomping and after he attacks your follower, he in turn slaughters you :/

Giants seem to be territorial; if you enter their camp, or get too close to them, they will turn hostile. They will not simply attack you on sight, which is why the devs call them passive, I guess. I have been able to walk up to some giants without getting clubbed in the face, however. It's rare, but some giants seem to not care about me at all.
