Our station has a siren as well. It sucks though cause I work right next door and can never hear what we're getting toned out to until 4 or 5 mins later. Kinda annoying.
took me back to when i was a kid on LI NY and hearing the sirens go off for the house calls. and at 6pm was the single wail for the end of the day watch... thanks for sharing
We have one of these up here in PA, first man in station controls house siren or it's an automatic at night for our volunteer station.. I'm always there in 30 seconds so haha
I personally love sirens. Nobody uses them in Erie County because the departments are well funded so we can afford pagers for everyone, plus we get dispatches via text message also.
However, in McKean County and Warren County, I love the use of sirens considering not everyone has pages. Hell, many times the horn in Kane gets me awake before the pager does!
Don't know if I made the comment on this particular video or not...but Cleveland, MS still has an all volunteer FD (Insurance rating Class 5), and when they blew the sirens, it was city law that you had to pull over to the side of the street and stop until the siren stopped sounding....usually 3 minutes. With a Class 5 department, you already know how fast the volunteers were in getting to a scene. They had 2 Thunderbolts, one Federal Signal, and one other antiquated siren...all worked perfectly
@firestar1075 No. I wouldnt give it a shit. It only lasts for just a moment. Its no different than the city testing the Tornado Warning every month. You would be surprised how many people complain about that :P
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I have to say its pretty dumb to have the big siren either stay at the fire station in shifts or carrier pagers if I lived near there and heard tt all the time id complain too u gotta think like ppl who aren't firefighters
Well, that is your opinion. The fact remains that you do not understand why we still operate with a house siren.
1.Secondary notification of an alarm.
2.It's a warning to the neighborhood that POVs/fire apparatus are going to be driving to and from the station. This gives them warning to clear the streets.
3.We are a VFD, not paid.
4.Most VFDs in the county use house sirens, so your complaints about hearing it all the time would fall on deaf ears. Thanks for your comment and view
@nwvfd22 When I was a kid we lived by the fire siren. It would sound every day at noon and at 6 PM. We had until it stopped making noise to get home for meal time.
@nwvfd22 I agree with you. I am a volunteer firefighter also. and when our pager goes off so the siren but we can manually disable it if we are at the hall for something.
@fcfdladder22 i completely understand u on tht and the idea makes sense i guess becuase i live in an all paid county i wouldnt b used to hearing tht all the time the most i hear is the tone drop in the station and we book it o the truck lol
@hootergirlsrhot ya i get that know the comment i made it would be kinda annoying to hear the srien go off i get it now. i understand what it means now so sorry for expressing curiousity on how other departments do things different then where i live fairfax county VA im not used to other departments ways so relax seriosly
@fcfdladder22 my staion still uses our house siren every dispatch we get the siren goes off even in the middle of the night. we carry pagers the siren is also a secondary paging system if the dispatch system would go down like when we got hit with the hurican our dispatch center had so many calls comeing in they didnt even hit our paggers they just hit our siren and faxed us the call log and that siren went off over times that day
@fcfdladder22 You ignorant fool. There are thousands of VFDs and Rescue Squads that still rely on these sirens to alert their members of emergencies. I know for a fact, that if the citizens of my county didn't hear the warning siren go off, but saw a firetruck barreling down the road with lights and sirens going, they would be pissed! They call dispatch and start asking questions. In small towns, people depend on these sirens to protect their lives. I just hope they don't depend on you.
@Regency500 sorry to offend you asshole forgive me for just expressing my thoughts on something im out there risking my ass to help people to im not used to a siren on top of my station so back off you act like i attacking you or soemthing i got respect for everyone of my brothers out there doing what they do best helping people do act like i dont give a shit about people becasue i would do anything to save someones life stop if your a firefighter do what we do best educate a fellow brother dick
@fcfdladder22 Look at this, you calling me dumb. First, learn to spell, second, know who you are talking to, I have been a nationally registered paramedic for the past 6 years. I am quite sure I know a lot more than emergency management than you; and yes, I am positively proud that Hanover County VA still uses sirens. We may have digital radios, but we still have tradition. Welcome to reality, you will run into a lot more assholes like me, "brother". See you on the big one.
We shut ours down completely b/c people always complained. I say, screw the neighbors. The fire station was there long before any of them moved in. It's a massive yellow thing, on a tower, above a huge building that says "FIRE DEPT.". One may assume, it's some sort of warning device...for the Fire Dept. It was only used for working fires, so to hell with them if they get woke up by it. That's the whole idea. Just aimed at a select few. Always told them join up or shut up.
Here in Windsor, back in 1965 when our deparmtnet had one engine, we rented out a small former auto garage as our fire station. Unfornitly, there was a china shop located next door, and glass could be heard shattering when ever our alarm went off. We were only in that station for maybe a month.
How is it that your department controls the siren and pagers, and not the 911 center? I've heard of sirens being powered off, where only the pagers will beep, but eventually they're turned on again. How does this work?
well we do have the biggest first due in out county and we dont always have members who sleep in and our probation members dont havem minitors yet so how would thay know if we got a call with out a scaner?
I'm not saying having a siren is annoying. I very well know they have a good use. I'm just saying having the siren peak for 1 minute 30 is annoying, as opposed ti having it cycle. And a siren that cycles up and down carries farther and draws more attention.
yeah, i think a cycle is less annoying, and it would actually wake up people and make sure they're hearing what they think they're hearing. when i'm in dorm room ready to vid the bmfc siren, i only know i'm hearing it because i had a hunch that i heard the siren, bt wait to see if i hear it again). if it was at a peak, i'd jst ignore it, or thnk it was tornado warning (if we actually got tornadoes) (sorry for the long comment, once i got going, i just coldn't stop)

Ours is set off by the dispatcher. They don't usually set it off past 9, or before 7 i think. All depends on who is dispatching.

Yeah... sirens are annoying.
Unless it's your house that's on fire, or your neighbor's and you didn't know it until the siren woke you up in the night.
There are people who bitch and complain when tornado sirens don't go off... (and tornadoes don't happen every day)
You can't please everyone... So they lose 15 minutes of sleep in the night, and they have to work in the morning... WHO CARES?
They sure ain't losing 3 to 4 hours of sleep, and busting their ass all night for free.

plus the neighbors get used to it
house sirens help us, yeah they are big and noisy but they save lives. its idiots like you who's not helping any of the VFD whats so ever.

Actually NFPA requires 2 modes of notification, the pagers/plectrons are only one way, the siren is usually the second.
