  • @TuxADay I'm on there pretty much the entire time I'm at a computer, because I keep my client logged in all the time. that means most of the work day, most of the evening.

  • 7 people are from microsoft

  • @thisweekinlinux yeeeeeey xD

i like the animation at the beginning still, but a jingle written by you would be awesome :D

  • i have another question, if there is any method to run ubuntu notebook on a desktop PC...a just like the syde bar :D please answer me :D

  • @nopcnolife1 it is indeed possible. check out my video demonstrating it at youtube.com/watch?v=zZITMkyEC3I

  • @thisweekinlinux

The link dosen't work to me. I have tried to put ubuntu notebok to run on my pc, but it sayes i can run only desktop edition :( by the way. I know i'm a little boring to you but i don't know what to choose....ubuntu or windows ....i like more ubuntu, but i don't know wich one is better for internet surfing.

  • ha ha, thanks man! yea wishin you a great year : )

  • Thanx for the answer! I appreciate that! And once again, GREAT video and song!

  • Is the song under cc? ;)

Fun video, I never though you'd actually do it. Then for another year of TWIL :)

  • @Tarnus88 I didn't do a specific license. I talked about it a bit on the second channel, where I announced the download link

  • OpenOffice needs a little Jordan-Penguin in the bottom right helping us write letters! :D

  • @scottrosenquist I"d have to get royalties. :P

  • Of course you realize that this has now become a tradition and we expect a new song with penguin costume to happen every new twilaversary.

  • @quinnten83 ohnoes! :)

  • haha This one was good :D

  • Nice man! Well done! but because i'm just a new guy to linux can you tell me a good video software wich is similar to after effects (sorry bad english)

  • @nopcnolife1 there isn't an exact alternative, but depending on what you want to do, Cinelerra might be able to do it. It can do motion tracking, masking, chromakey, etc. It's just a bit difficult to get started with.

There used to be a project called jahshaka, which was renamed to CineFX, that was supposed to be an After Effects alternative, but I can't find a download for it.

  • @thisweekinlinux

I think you can find it at cinefx.org/downloads/

  • Long live TWIL, and silly dances in penguin costumes for its anniversary!

    Seriously, I loved this :P

And a happy new year to everyone btw :)

  • I think I'm gonna cry (':

  • @ColombianSoldier1003 is that a good cry or a bad cry? :/

  • well, the song is actually really great. loved the melody. liked it.

  • someone needs to autotune this!

  • is there a CES coverage video coming? Because quite frankly that is what everyone is talking about :)

  • @QueeeeenZ Yup. I'm going to be making a news video today and talking about as much of the Android related news as I can.

  • @razaccour hm, that could be interesting... of course it gives me an even more interesting idea. ;)

  • The first linux rockstar! Penguin power!

  • I'm linking this to Facebook, lol. It's great.

  • @wolvee123 woohoo, thanks! :)

  • you are a good singer

    Thank you

  • Nice man, didn't think you would be much of a singer. But pretty fucking good.

I want the penguin costume! :D

  • Jordan - you've got a very good voice .............. you could really do the "folk music thing"

    EXCELLENT JOB

and I love the penguin !

  • You should quit your day job! Well probably not but this was much better than I had expected. Wow. Good Job. I am glad it didn't turn into "Happy Feet" Happy Three Kings Day and Last day of Christmas.

  • Well done sir.

  • you are awesome at singing! penguin jordan needs to be in every twil intro :D

  • When I said in the chat that you should sing a song and dance in that costume, I was just joking around; though this video is awesome and I am glad you actually considered the recommendation! :P

  • @eytuo to be entirely honest, I don't know if I remembered the suggestion... it was just coming up on the Twiliversary date, and I knew I had to do something. I was looking at Charlie McDonnell's website (@charlieissocoollike) and saw his song about Rhymezone. com, and when I looked at it, I decided to try writing a song.

  • @thisweekinlinux I was really surprised watching this video, I wasn't expecting such a good song in it!

  • amazing :D :)

  • hey man, you are really good at singing !! You should consider taking up singing :)

It would be really nice to see you singing while putting up news, reviews etc.. like a song having lyrical stuff for news n reviews

  • @bhaveekdesai thanks. :) singing while doing news/reviews/tutorials would be really difficult.

  • @MachinimaMan141 ironic indeed, hm.

  • Dang, you /can/ sing heh

  • @MachinimaMan141 I regularly do how-tos, but I haven't done many of them lately. I traditionally use gtk-recordmydesktop or kazam to do my screencasting. Excellent results.

  • You have guts, and a good voice. :)

  • Hey man you should do more ubuntu related videos if you want more views. your top 3 viewed videos are all ubuntu related:P

  • @jorn1233 I know. ;) I do talk about Ubuntu pretty regularly, but the most viewed videos are the distro release reviews. So when a new version of Ubuntu comes out, I'll make sure to talk about it. I should, however, start talking about Ubuntu variants (Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, etc.)

  • ....and why is this song so catchy? :) I have not been able to get it out of my head the whole day... haha

  • @QueeeeenZ it's catchy because I laced it with cocaine. :P

  • Jordan, do you watch Davedays or iJustine videos? They are really into music videos plus they're SO good at it. I think you can learn so much from these YouTube celebs. You should get a professional camera movement *wink* wink

  • @QueeeeenZ I do indeed watch them. the problem with camera movement is it requires at least one other person, and I don't have one. :P

  • Great voice man

  • That was actually really good :)

  • No, No, No, NO.... how to down grade what has been a great batch of video.... why lower yourself to such a cheep stunt...

  • @rogermsw It wasn't a cheap stunt. I made a promise to the people who watched my live streams months ago, and this was my way of fulfilling that promise. This video is not indicative of the way the channel is going in the future, just a celebration and a look back at things over the last year.

  • boy, you know how to sing

  • Comment removed

  • Man that was an awesome song, of course I hadnt heard you sing since 2003 haha.

  • @vltek hm, what did I sing in 2003? Oh, at Marshall's wedding?

  • @thisweekinlinux yup, at his wedding, ya know the first one hehe, as for what you sang, I have no clue

  • @vltek Hm... I seem to remember "Butterfly Kisses" and "You're the Inspiration", but that might be wrong.

  • You should cover the free software song. I bet you'd do a good job of it.

  • @kcj1993 I'll have to listen to it again, it's been a REALLY long time.

  • I have to say, I really like that song! :P It's really cool!

  • @v1y1 woot, thanks!

  • Comment removed

  • Fantastic!! A music channel would be quite enjoyable.

  • @someguy39393 got some plans in the works already. Nothing finalized.

  • wow.. i just find myself listening to it over and over again :) I wonder what you could come up with if you worked for a whole month :)

  • @QueeeeenZ that would be interesting. :) or if I was working with someone who actually knew what they were doing. :P

  • by the way where can i get me one of those sweet tux plushies (do they still call em plushies?) you have in the background of some of your vids?

    i heart penguins

  • @ryancouture I bought them on thinkgeek, bit. ly/plushtux

  • what about lasik? surely a big time programmer such as yourself has adequate "buck"

  • @ryancouture sadly, I don't. I'm a civil employee, 30-40% less pay than private industry, with a wife and kid.

That said, I kinda look funny without glasses.

  • jordan i gotta say you wouldnt be a half bad lookin guy if you ditched the school boy republican hairdo

just ask for a blended in haircut, #3 or something at the haircutter, finger length on top :P and just mess it up out of the shower

    way better look for ya

  • @ryancouture I'm an old guy, man. :P

That said, I've seriously been considering a hairstyle change. I used to do that sort of thing back in college, and it just sort of went by the wayside. Might be the perfect time for changing things up.

  • @thisweekinlinux 28 aint old man!

anyway i dont find the haircut reflects your personality, makes you come off as a stiff computer nude cubicle guy, watching your vids you clearly arent! (definitely a geek tho!)

the glasses are enough to tell people "i know my way around a stick of ram"

i'd go for some rimless glasses as well

    keeep the vids commin

  • @ryancouture 28 certainly feels pretty old. I think the toddler helps that a lot.

That's the whole goal of my first resolution for this year, to "better myself" physically, so I'm going to try to lose weight, perhaps "improve" my looks (hair, skin). Things like that.

You know, I've never worn rimless, but the place I get my glasses from is so cheap, I might just pick up a pair.

  • @thisweekinlinux ah, i see i cannot PM

    arent you speciallll

anyway its clearlycontacts dot CA, they're oakley chestnut crystal brown

    hot shit right there

  • @ryancouture yeah, that's the site I go through (though I use the US version). $118 is a bit high. I'll have another eye exam in May, I might look into a pair then.

  • @ryancouture i PM'd you the glasses i just got, and the wholesaler i get em from - im not sure if clearlycontacts is canada only, im pretty sure they have a U.S equivalent; but yeah great deals there these are oakley's regular $300+ for $120, w/ lenses, kit everything, full warranty i sat on mine a year after i got em and they replaced them in 2 days

p.s what do you recommend in the way of a bittorrent client for ubuntu? i just tried transmission but comparatively seemed slower than utorrent

  • so who is updating the linux kernel at this point?

"tux the penguin" is just the mascot for all linux distributions?

  • @ryancouture Lots and lots of developers. Linus Torvalds still makes the major decisions, but there are tons of contributors (paid and unpaid) around the world.

  • @thisweekinlinux and then canonical etc. just include them as they release newer versions?

  • @ryancouture exactly. They might have to include some patches for software or hardware, but at the end of the day, they just take the kernel, compile it (with or without patching) and throw it with a bunch of other software.

  • @initfortehlulz I gotz the magick hands. :P The power of editing, man. hehe

  • dude! that song is one of the best i've heard in 2011 ;P.

seriously though, mp3 please? i loved it!

  • @jhflesher link's in the description now. :)

  • @thisweekinlinux lol that was quick. thanks!

  • Great song, just needs more cowbell... :P

  • @TWILisawesome see, now I need to go buy a cowbell, man...

  • @TWILisawesome I gave yuou a thumbs up 'cause of your username LOL

  • nice song, it kinda reminds me of bob dylan

  • That was an awesome song! Great job and congrats!

  • From "start to beginning" (your quote in video) it was a very cool song. You have a good voice as well. Brave of you to perform in the penguin suit as well. Bravo.

  • @GhoS64 yeah, I had a word fail. :P and by the time I got to editing that, I was sweaty and exhausted, so I decided not to refilm it. thanks. :)

  • Sounds very Don Mclean like.

  • @histoplasmosis I can sort of see that. I take that as a compliment, thanks! :)

  • win!

  • That was actually pretty good. Looking forward to another year (more) of This Week in Linux :)

  • Good ones (year, shows, videos, reviews, song, just about everything). Keep going

  • Good ones (year, shows, videos, reviews, song, just about everything)

  • Good one.

  • Hey that's pretty good =) wtg Jordan!

  • That was nice! Great voice! BTW... Which software did you use to edit the video? The audio is also really clear

  • @27aBe27 I used Kdenlive to edit the video, and Audacity for the audio. Thanks:)

  • haha lol you know i was expecting a really terrible song, but hey proved me wrong didnt you XD

  • 2 things!

    - Can u make a tutorial on animation ? (I like the beginning of TWIL, heh)

    - When are you making ur own distro? (U fkn have to)

  • @Joebandoe2 I made a video on my intro a while back (youtube.com/watch?v=87VQx6hvJm4). I didn't create the animation, it's stock video footage, sorry.

As far as a distro, I'm not into the idea of making a distro of my own. I've thought about compiling some wallpapers, icons, and sounds that are TWIL-related, and making a package for distros, but just haven't done it.

  • Nice! I like the "from start to beginning" blooper XD

  • You've got a great voice!

  • Nice! Great song! Happy Twiliversary to you too! Keep up the good work!

  • Why do I feel like getting a Tux suit now?

  • @roflschofel because all the cool kids are doing it. :P

  • LOL "tried to crack a couple jokes" I just realized that was "heh now i can zoom in on boobies!" haha

  • @dynetrax nice catch. :) If I wanted to take a lot longer to make this, I was going to turn it into a video montage, but I was more interested in getting it out there, since the song was done.

  • Oh wow, one of my subscriptions is dancing around in a penguin costume. It must be my birthday. Oh wait, it is! That was entertaining. Good job. Oh, and after the video is over it shows your video "I've got another kidney stone!" The funny part is because of the length of the video name it only says "I've got another kid..." and in the picture you look like Mr. Serious.

  • @JimmaWetcha it's your birthday? Happy birthday, dude!

  • @thisweekinlinux Thanks!

  • Wow, you have a really, really good voice!

  • You are really good!!!!

    Cheers

  • The song sounds great!

Congratulations on your twiliversary. I hope you'll stay a long-long time on YouTube. Your video's have always been very entertaining as educational. A little bit less Arch would be nice though.

Will the 2nd twiliversary have a metal version of the celebration song? :P

    Keep up the great work!

  • @LordBas2 thanks! I do intend to stick around for a long while.

Less Arch? I didn't think I was doing much at all. I think I've done a total of 4 videos on it (3 install videos, 1 review, months ago).

  • kind of repetitive and kind of cheesy, if you want a honest and hopefully constructive opinion;

    SOOOO AWESOME, JORDAN, if you want me to be nice;

either way, congrats for the effort, and for your dedication to your subscribers!

  • @sauron1grenoble I do appreciate the constructive criticism. Not sure if I'm going to end up writing songs in the long run, this was just a first try, and a very rough one.

    Thanks for the honesty. :)

  • @thisweekinlinux trial and error is the way to learn... you should know that by now if you work as a developer :)

  • UR COMMITMENT TO UR SUBSCRIBERS, UR channel and UR FAMILY really makes u "THE GREATEST PERSON On YOUTUBE"

  • @amanunpredictable thanks a lot, man. :)

  • This is awesome, I love it.

  • I want the 3 people who disliked this video PM or email me telling my why they didn't like it!

  • Awesome song bro. My dad has a guitar just like that, but the stain on the front is darker

  • @GodofAnotherWorId thanks! :)

  • @Randomness11322 um, yup. He's almost 2.

  • Looking also for more Arch & Command line videos. Good song ^^

  • @Niflheyn I've got a few more Arch videos planned, just a bit stuck on how to do the next one (laptop/wireless issues)

  • lol

good scene of humor. The only question is what do you do with the penguin suit now?

  • @TheShowThatSUX hehe, thanks. Holding on to the penguin suit for now. If I hit 50k subs before September, I'll wear it at Ohio LinuxFest and film it. :)

  • @thisweekinlinux I can just imagine to looks of people being interviewed by TUX

  • I'm really looking forward to some more Arch related videos. =)

  • Hehe penguin costume.

  • *sniff* That was beautiful

  • I see asecond....um...third career there! You've got a decent singing voice actually, Jordan!

  • @EdgyRootStudios well thank you, Edgy! :)

  • i wasn't expecting that song to turn out as good as it did. i was expecting a facepalm moment but my forehead didn't hurt by the end of the song.

btw, if you were to do another giveaway some day you could probably do that costume.

  • @schmidtbag I'm glad I was able to keep your forehead relatively pain-free. :P

  • HAHAAH dont b afraid to be funny or yourself. lets get linux some attention out there in mainstream. lets go 2011

  • @BigJGresh agreed, man. Gotta lighten up from time to time. :)

  • @xpawnrip thanks, man. :)
