I love genia, and I typically find her very lyrical but there are some parts where she seems just a bit behind the music. I'm okay with blaming the orchestra though as they have been known to stray from the dancers before :)
This pas de deux was created by Petipa for himself & the ballerina Amalia ferraris in 1859 as a concert piece. When Petipa revived "Satanella" for Alexandra Vergina in 1868 the it was added to the 3rd act. In Imperial times it was known as "Le Carnaval de Venise - La fascination", though today - mostly outside of Russia - it is called the "Satanella PDD". The reason it is called "Le Carnaval de Venise" was because Pugni based the music on Paganini's violin piece "Carnevale di Venezia".

The music sounds like the slave pas de deux from Le Corsaire. Or am I just going crazy?
