ha ha ha! People these days don't know how to use talent these days they only focus it on flashy things. If they want to use war story tellers they should try referring to the historical record to know how war did function.
Having just finished the series I find myself agreeing with most of your points. The CG was too fast & hard to distinguish. Michael felt more like Roy that Ozma did. For villains, this would have been better as a video games. Also, does the cop-out you're referring to in the last episode concern the "love triangle?"
Good - not great.
What I really don't understand is how, after only 50 years, humanity repopulates enough to send at least 117 city-sized convoys across the entirety of the galaxy.
For many people 7 did not feel like Macross either. So I guess that means only Macross Plus, and the original along with it's compilation movie feel like Macross. Funnily enough some people actually prefer the AU Macross II to both Frontier and 7.
@darksword101 Well my problem is Frontier is that I feel it's trying to lower itself by using so many anime cliches and tropes. That's why it doesn't feel like Macross to me. It's still Macross, but even 7 felt more like Macross despite being a huge departure.
@TheAnimeOverviewer It would be okay if it was only alto and ranka in school. I am also wondering why two of Alto's classmates are in school and in SMS before he even got there. At least Alto fell into the cockpit like many gundam protagonist. Luca seems to be a genius yes but his forte seems to be programming and robotics so instead of a pilot he should logically be an engineer. And the glasses guy well he looks like he could pass for older than twenty yet the staff made him a student.
@TheAnimeOverviewer Oh you take that back! Macross 7 is more like a parody of the original series. I think you judge Frontier like if it was a Hollywood movie. I mean, c'mon it's anime. I was skeptic myself when I started watching it but I tried to have an opened mind, and I ended up liking the series a lot.
I find the first movie (The False Songstress) better defines what the level of conflict there is with Alto. Is he escaping from the family heritage? Is this a choice he makes himself? Or is he just acting out a part and conforming that part to the people and circumstances around him?
Excellent review, I agree with pretty much everything you said. Definitly too much pointless crap in the show. And I didn`t really care who died either cuz I hated all the characters.
Harsh, but what we have to keep in mind is that frontier was made 25 years after the original series. This series is catering to a completely different audience. Viewers these days like all that school and ecchi bs. We can gripe all we want about the good old days but the truth is, anime as a genre isnt what it used to be.
Hell, trying to please both original fans and make money would be like digging up Beethoven and telling him JB is the new standard in music.
@DExAvalon Sorry for the late reply, but my problem with Frontier is that it's trying to be like everyone else. It's one of those franchises that stood on it's own. There's a difference between using Minmei compared to Sheryl in terms of fanservice. It's like comparing black and white nude photography and playboy.
I have seen most of the Macross shows aside from this one after I saw Robotech Shadow Chronicles it kinda turned me away from this show. Should I still give it a peak?
@TheAnimeOverviewer i know you don't do request but i recommend you watch a show called bokurano. Its a story that drags you in deep its a mecha its like EVA but likable. Thanks for listening.
Great review dude, and yeah I agree with ya on the one demensional villian,I get sick of seeing these types of villians who have no personality or valid reasons why they wanted to conquere the universe, this seems to be a traditional thing in almost every macross,i've seen digimon villians with more depth and personality than that,as for sheryle and ranka lee,I did'nt mind them much, and yes they were kind of annoying during the first half but slowly got better in the later half like you said.
great review. i do agree. i was planning on reviewing this, but if people review an anime in a way that i would intend to review it, i take it off my list. i say if i wasn't that familiar with the previous installments, i probably would enjoy frontier a bit more and i like how it pays homage and reference to previous installments, but i just agree that it didn't have it's identity like i said. as for isamu, he's the fucking maverick of anime. how can you not be down with that?
I'll still give this a shot. I personally disagree with you on Gundam Seed, so maybe I'll think the same with this (maybe). Oh and Gundam Mania season 2, CAN"T WAIT!!!!!
I agree with a lot of points you brought, up but I'd give it a three out of 5 simply because it was at least enjoyable, even though it could have been better.
Alto's character was way too quiet, and besides becoming more daring Ranka didn't grow up at all. I do wish that they had gone into Sheryl and Grace's relationship more in the anime though (they do in supplemental material but still).
When are you going to branch off of the mecha series'? I don't think you've done anything different in a while and it seems like you have done more mecha reviews than any other genre imo.
When it comes to the "realistic mecha" shows I always prefer Gundam and I never really gave a shit about Macross, but I am sorry to see that same thing that happen to Gundam is happening to Macross.

@TeenChibi Admittedly I did like her too, despite her archetype.
TheAnimeOverviewer 11 months ago
@TheAnimeOverviewer I agree with you on Ranka. She played more of the role of the jealous sister rather then anything else.
Something new that I would like to see is one of the love triangle dying. That's a whole new ground for Macross they haven't touched on yet.
