in my opinion a seymour duncan black out is the best active pickup.

the blackouts have more output and a greater sound as the emg 60/81/85

@axeiston EMGs have stood the test of time, Blackouts sound pretty good too, depends on what you're going for. Invaders really shouldn't be thrown into this one, since their passive. The only passives I'd consider for comparison are the Dimarzio X2N, D Activator, or the SD JB model, maybe the SD Dave Mustaine Live Wires (which are pretty much just an active JB/Jazz set). I personally prefer the 81x/60x set, but Blackouts are pretty nice too. Just find out what sound you like better.

emgs 81 or the bridge blackout is the only pups i use its fine the emg hz with boost pose elecric problems i had my store send back 67 of these with faulty wiring problems. i believe alexi still plays the blakouts and emg 81. i had front stage view of him in augs and he used 5 guitars only one with emg hz pups

alexi laiho has his own signiture pickup from emg. it is still a passive pickup but it has the emg afterburner with it. check it out, it's called the emg alx

The afterburner is just straight up gain and the boost offered with the Alexi pickup is a gain boost PLUS the ability to change the resonant frequency of the pickup(s) wired to it. It is similar, in that way, to the Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster Pedal. This effect only works on PASSIVE pickups because of the high impedance. Michael Amott of Arch Enemy uses the SD pedal

i was a hardcore EMG fan UNTIL i dropped a Blackout into my washburn and omg the blackouts made the EMGs sound like a passive pickup,lol The blackouts deff give out more distortion and output, and they produce way less hum. i deff reccomend the blackouts.

It also depends what you like. I personally would recommend the EMG HZ-4 passive because thats what Alexi uses and you don't always have to replace the fucking battery... But then again the Blackouts and the EMG 81 still kick ass. But it depends what YOU want. Go to your local guitar store and tryout a guitar with a Blackout and an EMG 81. Compare and see which one you like.

Some guitars are better designed for certain types of playing. My Ibanez and Washburn are much better for shredding than my Les Paul as they have thin fast necks and jumbo frets. Whereas the Les Paul is better for bluesy classic rock soloing.

I'm not sure how the EMG HZ's as set up, but if you've got EMG actives (like an 81 or 85) they'll just plug right in - take off the pickup surround, unplug the EMG and plug in the Blackout.

Ah yep - you'll get a full wiring diagram along with everything else you need in the package, it's not all that hard, basic soldering. Shouldn't cost much to get a professional to do it if you're not confident in doing it.

There won't be any routing to do, hardest part is finding a space for the battery.
