This sounds like orchesrated agression..so totally in your face .
This might be a dumb question..but anyonw know what kind of recreational substances Mr Xenakis might' ve enjoyed ?
I know no-one has asked but we all want to know..
We all know there is no-one else that can come close to him as far as being a genius and creating his own, special little universes for us to all get lost in !
I've heard his work before but this is one is fascinating. Not soothing though! I love Bach, Mozart etc but this good as an "antidote" from time to time! Stimulates what is left of my brain cells!
Kékrōps was a mythical king of Athens. The name might mean 'face with a tail': it is said that, born from the earth itself, he had his top half shaped like a man and the bottom half in serpent or fish-tail form. He was the founder and the first king of Athens itself, though preceded in the region by the earth-born king Actaeus of Attica. Cecrops was a culture hero, teaching the Athenians marriage, reading and writing, and ceremonial burial.
Roger Woodward gave a guest lecture at my uni when this recording came out. Apparently, when asked if there were any references to other composers in the piece, Xenakis pointed to the final octave B flat in the piano part and said "Brahms".
The first is Clarence Barlow's Cogluotobusisletmesi, which the user scriabinwasmydad recently uploaded, and the other two are Donald Martino's Pianississimo, which has also been uploaded.
Claudio Abbado directed the Mahlerjungendorchester in Vienna for the live performance from the Wien Modern with Roger Woodward soloist. DGG made the CD.
It's available for sale at certain online retailers. Just plug in "Xenakis Keqrops score" in Google, and if you peruse the search results, you will find a few sites that carry the score.
Note that "peruse" means to "scrutinise",not to "skim quickly."
Thanks again for the great uploads John11inch, a wonderful piece which suits my mood particularly well tonight. Have you ever read Xenakis' "Formalized Music: Thought and Mathematics in Composition"?
I'm rather surprised this was found to be a disappointing piece at its premier — I find it to be very powerful and moving, and among the finest of Xenakis oeuvre, but that's just my opinion.
Thanks for posting this on here. I myself have been trying to find a recording and have not been able to find one.
Thanks for uploading this!

Piano Concerto No.4 by Xenakis-maybe it would get played more often if it was called that instead?

I just love this piece-a very rare recording indeed.

The best piano concerto since 1950 along with the one by Michael Tippett.
Xenakis spoke quitly but wrote very loud music.

Just discovered something!
Listen to the end of "Lichens" (also by Xenakis) and then play the beginning of this piece.
Is this perhaps a sequel?

Yeah I know. There actually IS one copy available for sale on like... Amazon UK, but it's insanely expensive. Like 150 bucks after dollar conversion.
