Per Ronnie Spector in her biography, Joey Dee and David Brigati wanted the Ronettes to be cast as the group members' girlfriends, as they were already working at the Peppermint Lounge. But since they were mixed-race, the movie's casting director considered them "too light to play black girls and too dark to play white girls", and thought this would confuse moviegoers. So the Ronettes had to settle for being dancers in the crowd scenes. But they are there if you look closely.
