@Dragblacker they used oil instead of coal... i wish i was my current age back in the steam era.... i completely missed the whole golden age for the railroads...
These were 4-8-8-2's, almost Big Boy wheel configuration. Larger than the UP Challenger class (4-6-6-4). Both Big Boy, and even the smalle Challenger, are articulated. They had to be to get around the turns. So, was the SP Cab Forward articulated? It doesn't seem to be, here or in any videos of it. Why not? How did get around the turns? Anyone who can help with this question - thank you! Most appreciated.
I have the older one as well. Because of the difficulty of doing the conversion, which required some reengineering of the chassis and boiler, I bought the new one instead.
When I was 3, I saw a Cab Forward pulling a train, and it scared to death, but at the same time hooked me on trains for life Beautiful model, I have the older ps1 model, which I am going to have comverted to ps2
they designed them cab forward like that because the engineers would practically suffocate when going through tunnels because the smoke would collect in the cab, so the theory behind these was how would the smoke get in if it was coming out way behind us?
Wow, very nice! It would have been great to stand trackside and see the real Cab Forward's working the grade's way back when. Thanks for the video, Kev.
that's acually not true! The cab forwards acually did serve as the prime power for the daylight once! It was back in 1951 when SP started putting a cab forward on the San Joaquin Daylight because before it was pulled by 2 mountain class 4-8-2s. So a cab forward ment no double header which also ment saving an extra crew. However it lasted a very short time because the train always ended up being late.
I got the Pentrex cab forward DVD for christmas and Cab Forwards pulled many passneger trains including most of the passenger trains over Donner Pass.
Awesome Video! As an employee at Whistle Stop up here in Portland, I cant wait to see this come in. But yes, you are correct. You would see Cabforwards pulling Passenger, as well as lending helper service. I have footage of them pulling long passenger sets such as the "Owl" through Caliente, up to the loop. Aww, My days at La Mesa back in San Diego. Miss it. Glad to finally see this run though! Congrats!
Yup SP did use cabforwards to pull there passenger trains from time to time (in fact the final SP passenger train over Donner Pass was pulled by a cab-foward) too bad only one cab foward still exists today.
I actually got to see that one remaining Cab Forward when I visited the California State RR Museum in Sacramento. You don't really appreciate just how big these behemoths were until you stand next to one!
@trainsanddominoes4 Yes and it was the very first train i saw in my whole life

How do they get coal into the firebox with a cab-forward when the cab is nowhere near the tender?

Never cared much for the sight of cab forward engines... It's like they're going backwards.

The whistle sounds like a small electric motor.
Triplex5014 2 years ago
Sounds like the Cab Forwards had 6 or 5 chime whistles, did they?

That is an AC6 one of a few that SP streamlined the front after years of service. The AC6 had the same power as all of the later AC`s.

Is that a AC-7???

Did the Cabs ever pull the Daylight?
trainchugger53 3 years ago
They were never the prime power but they did ocasionally assist the the daylight by coupling infront of the GS-4 as a helper.
