  • My 1st Dead show was in Boston, 1971 with the Wall of Sound. NRPS started it off a 6:00 - dressed in glitter suits...the Dead closed in out at 2:00AM - a show to remember. 4 nights later, I saw the New Riders at Clark University in Worcester, MA - maybe 4-500 people. The Dead came out and jammed with them...Garcia played steel pedal that night. Those were the days...

  • The New Riders of the Purple Sage with Special Guest Donna Jean Godchaux will be playing Island in the Mountains Fest on Blannahassett Island in Marshall , NC on 08-01-2011.

Google Island in the Mountains Fest and come join us on the island.

  • Jerry warming up and rehearsing for few minutes is so much more worth my time than a hundred other musicians playing their best riffs...and those hundred other guys are good musicians... Jerry is from another dimension.....he could probably play tin whistle and make it sound divine...

  • Acid rock is the king of all rock. Long live the dead and all their friends.

  • AMEN BILL! He sure is my Big Pappa Bear :-))))

  • This is great stuff. A nice look a little more behind the scenes. Thanks for posting this.

  • OH Yeah!!!

  • nrps are at the gathering of the vibe,s this summer check them out thy rock,, i love them guy,s it was them that turn me on to the dead

  • nrps here in greensboro nc this summer 2010

  • Having read Phil Lesh's " Searching for the sound" You can see that this is Gerry

before he went inti decline. Such a great artist.

  • PBS often shows "The Last Days of the Fillmore," especially when it's the anniversary of the summer of love. At least in SF they do. Then they sell it during the pledge breaks.

  • 0:13 - 0:28, isn't that Harry Chapin?

  • @gjc82071 Not Harry Chapin, it's Bill Graham, the owner of the Fillmore.

  • The pedal steel is tough to play, this proves that Jerry could do anything! This is a dumb question but who were the members of NRPS?

  • @areUready4thecountry New Riders original lineup Dave Nelson, John Dawson(Marmaduke), Jerry playin pedal steel and Robert Hunter(Jerrys writing partner) playin bass Go to wikipedia for full lineup over the years....many players

  • I love Jerry's pedal steel playing !!!! He's one of my favorite pedal steel guitarists ! That solo album he did playing the pedal steel is so good it's a amazing !!!

  • This is 1971.

  • Jerry lending his musical talents to the pedal steel guitar...seems like he could play anything, Getting NRPS started was yet another of his many contributions to country rock. I miss ya' Jerry...RIP.

  • were those guys talkin about yoyos at :50?

  • @TheWilliamville yes that what thy did on the bus on tour to kill time is learn a new trick with the yoyo,s,,lol

  • I loved their music back then so much, but the lyrics were quite childish.

  • Right on Jerry on the peddle steel, Bill Graham Jerry is the" Big Pappa Bear", Looks like the Fillmore West in San Fran.

  • One of the fans looked like he was luggin' a 12 pack. They let you bring in outside beer at that joint?

  • Yipee

  • My understanding is NRPS came Poppycock in Palo Alto for there first gig. This is what I was told in 1969 when they came to play there. We did the light show and took care of the night club. We were 19 and we had High st and University ave to ourselves. Great days. A lot of greats came to poppycock.

  • @IExpo I remember them at The Poppycock upstairs. Santana and others there too. Was a cool place back in old PA days

  • jerry's magic!!!!

  • shows why jerry was great....always played even when others didn't.

  • buddy cage replaced Jerry . that is Jerrys

  • This is such a classic clip...I am huge fan of spencer dryden and I think this is just such a country-dead-airplane fusion...so far out

  • pedal steel

  • its not a lap steel and thats buddy cages steel ill bet.

     god bless ya jerry

  • lap steel never saw him play one !

  • It's a pedal steel, not a lap steel

  • Presumably that nice, deft touch on drums is the great Spencer Dryden...

  • I would want to play all day every day too if I could play like Jerry. I gave up on guitar because of him.....lol

  • i NEED MORE OF THIS TAPE I WILL PAY ANYTHING

  • Last Days of the Fillmore (2009) is now available on DVD.

I don't have a copy, but I think this NRPS part is in it (some things in the original movie are left out of the DVD)

    :)

  • RIP Marmaduke. I LOVED NRPS.

  • Love ya and miss ya Jerry!

  • i finally had a chance to hear a lot of Jerry Garcia pre- Dead over the last few days.

Now I understand how even Aoxomoxoa was a prelude to a return to the 'roots' elements of American music for Jerry and cohort.

    Long live the Dead.

  • Jerry's playing and the N.R.P.S. are always great but my favorite part of this video now is the roadies in the beginning talkin' about yo-yo's.

  • awesome jerry steel pedal playing.

  • jerry on steel pedal w/ nrps klassik, thanks for a great post!

  • This was a good one. Remember this night at The Fillmore West well.

Garcia played guitar w/ Rowen Brothers.

Then pedel steel w/ New Riders

Then back on guitar w/ The Dead.

    He rocked all night long.

  • @ 6749er I look like Garcia. I could be his twin.

  • @6749er It being Halloween 2010, I remember seeing Jerry at school this weekend (they did 4 shows) with Jerry on pedal steel with the Riders.

Early show on 10/30, I had 3rd row and right in front of Garcia on the ps. It's still as clear as day 40 years hence

  • @JustJake57 Nice!

  • We used to go Pre-New Riders to see Dawson who was trying out his songs with Nelson & Garcia who was just getting into the peddle steel in a real small place in Menlo Park called The Underground just down the El Camino from where Magoo's Pizza was where The Warlocks played their first gig before changing their name to Grateful Dead. They played The Underground on Weds, nights. Be maybe 40 people & Garcia could be himself with out people freaking out over Jerry!! like they did latter. Was fun!

  • Yes, that is the late great Spencer Dryden. He

came aboard after leaving the Airplane. Spencer Dryden was one of the all time greats.

Natural flowing style, could swing any band!

What a character. He was the coolest dude.

  • Great video. Is there anywhere I can find this whole movie?

  • Is the drummer playing in the jam with NRPS after the 2 minute mark, (not Mickey Hart)Spencer Dryden?
