bruce gary made this group rock.outstanding "power pop" drumming from a great drummer. RIP bg you inspired me in so many ways. see u in heaven...we'll jam
This is prolly my fave Knack song. It starts out hard and stays that way all the way through. Bang your head to it or dance to it or whatever to it. Awesome. Though if you listen to "My Sharona" for the first time in years, you realize what an absolutely ingeniuos song that is also. I first heard it in '79. It was blaring out of an arcade doorway as I rode by on my BMX. I stopped and listened. That day, that legendary day, The Knack became MY band.
This album just came to I-tunes. It jams! Used to be hard to find. Round trip and serious fun are also new arrivals. I know where my summer allowance is going.
There has only been about 10 drummers (yes, if you play drums, you can count yourself..) ...that have created lics, with a sound and style, almost any listener
can identify- as.."THAT DRUMMER..!" I can hear THIS man's 'chops'-comin'out from that tiny drumset, a MILE away
...Last of the R E A L drumsounds, on the airways.Before trigger-samples. It's all
Love this band, and I don't own the full catalogue yet--got GTK, Zoom, and several best ofs. Proud owner of a GTK baseball shirt! RIP, Doug...long live power pop
I don't have much to add to the all the great comments here except, for those who are only familiar with My Sharona or just the first album do yourselves a favor and go out and find the second and third albums. Both "but the Little Girls Understand" and "Round Trip" are mini-masterpieces in their own right. Thanks for the great music guys. RIP Doug and Bruce.
It was the Knack that led me to so many great bands back in 79 and insured that I would stay clear of Journey, Night Ranger and all that dreadful crap of the 80's. I became a punk and power pop junkie and was proudly declaring my love for the Raspberries, Shoes, Twilley, Plimsouls, etc. and of course the Knack. The beauty of the Knack is that they sound so damn timeless. The hooks, the musicianship and energy is top notch.
@ecosmart123 Hear! Hear! I suggest you listen to our spirited defense of The Knack via an interview with guitar genius Berton Averre on our channel. The first 3 Knack LPs are superb.
The summer of '79 was dominated by "Get the Knack" - the album that marked the end of disco and the resurrection of melody, harmony and rock and roll energy.
You got that so right thatgirlinnewyork, Doug was just that, pure, well crafted rocker. He will be missed but his music will live on.Thanks for posting yuor comment,I was going to say the same thing
A lot of posturing and posing back when the Knack came out -- all that tired 'are they authentic?' crap. they appealed to those outside the punk and new wave slipstream. blah blah blah. boring borderlines. What they were was AMAZING!!!!!! Dirty minds roiling in a stir fry of action-packed power pop. Looking at these videos again today, I wish to God we had some stripped-down rockers like this. Kids today need to get out of their Internet bubbles, hit the clubs and dance. RIP
Good write up. Even Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols secretly loved these guys. The DVD biography released before Bruce Gary died has interviews with him admitting he's played Get the Knack a million times. Just like I have in the last 30 years. Make that a million and one, cuz I had to break it out today. This time it was bittersweet, but it still blows me away.
My first boy/girl thing was while listening to the Knack do My Sharona in 79. I was hooked on the Knack, not so the boy...and my love of the Knack endures. RIP Doug and Bruce. I hope you're already making music together again.
All four of these guys are exceptional musicians. This style/sound of music reminds me of a time when things were much different. Today's music lacks the 'funness' the music of the 80's had!
@BeatleJaynumber9 Very cool. What was your gas mileage? I'm guessing about 6 to the gallon! The second album was so damn good. I see that you have the Raspberries on your page. That back to back version of Go all the way+ I wanna be with you is so incredible. I never tire of that clip. I think it was some Saturday morning show.
Hey ecosmart123- actually the Charger I had was pretty weak. Had a 318, so not bad mileage. My Plymouth Roadrunner GTX was a gas burnin' screamer. Had a 440 with a four barrel.
That clip of Raspberries is awesome, huh? The show was called Flipside.
I encourage fans of The Knack to check out Raspberries. ...and to rock on too.
I had the second album on 8 track because my buddy who had an AMC Matador put a huge new sound system in his ride and I wanted to crank out this album in the school parking lot. We thought we were way fuckin' cool. I have to admit, I never included Bruce Gary as one of my favorite drummers until about 5 years ago when I was listening to Your Number or your Name and got blown away. Now, every time I listen to The Knack, I focus on the drums. RIP
Ray Davies once said in an interview that he thought Van Halen's version of his song really kicked ass compared to his version. So what is your point or points if anyone else thinks a song can't be better than it's original. when is the last time you wrote or played anything that anyone wanted to hear--ya bunch a fags
Bruce Gary... One of the best drummers for one of the most awesome bands ever...
R.I.P. Bruce.
We were listening to this record the 1st AND 2nd time I got laid in Jr. High. All that aside, This album fuckin' rocks! To this day when I hear it I recall the music as much as the "pop" of my (and her) cherry.
Great tune off their underrated second album. It is really cool how they appear in the begining and dissappear in the end. Bruce Gary was an awesome drummer. RIP Bruce.
wish this had been the lead single on the album back in 1980--it just picks up where Get the Knack left off (well Get the Knack was initially designed to be a double album)--either way it rocks as do the Knack
To the individual who felt the need to remind everyone that Bruce Gary was the drummer, I have one question: Do you wear loafers or can you actually tie your shoes? The fact that I spoke to the late Mr. Gary's virtuosity from a guitarists perspective was the point. What do you play, the radio?
Back then, in Flint, MI, where I lived, this song received no air play at all. "Baby Talks Dirty" was played often for a short time, but not this one. I never knew about it. Good rock 'n roll--obscure music of all kinds--is so much easier to find now!
This was an old Kinks tune that they added to "...but the little girls understand." album. It's a shame that the record company chose to release "Baby Talks Dirty" as the first release from the album, because this surely would have been a wiser choice. It might have even quelled the uproar over the "racy" lyrics that led to some stores dropping the record from their shelves.
As I kid I adored Get the Knack. In February 1980 the 2nd album, Little Girls, came out, and the first song on the radio in Providence was "I Want Ya". It was immediately my new favorite song, but back home in Detroit they never played it, as it was never released as a single (should have been). So, for the next 29 years I looked for the song, and now finally found it. It gives me chills. Great song. Doug certainly does look weird in this video, but he didn't usually look like that.
the knack retierd at the time when they were at the top of their career because lead singer and he was also rythm gtr but in a interveiw he said he had to quite because of his addictions to drugs so he left the life and moved on in another direction until serious fun was released 6 years latter
That is a near perfect "pop" song.(why does the phrase "pop" always have a negative slant to it?)Clearly...they "nod" to the past, but SO many of their songs are fantastic(think "oh Tara" for one)and they are lite-years ahead/better than what people play on the radio now!.I remember them...and how their "sound"...their "roots" drove me to seek out other bands(Kinks/the Jam)of same nature. More than brilliant, genius!
Saw the Knack in Madison at the Memorial Union in 1979 w/ The Fools from Minneapolis (another great band). They are great and their music will and is standing the test of time.....
I figured if The Knack had released an EP (remember those?) of songs like this after the first album, it might have given them some breathing space for their next album. After all, the critics were all over them and even some of the fans started turning against them. And on top of that, The Clash released "London Calling". Remember the line, "That phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust"? Of course, we can all dream of what might have been...
excellent comment, i lost the trace of the group just after the second album, actually i don't know what were they doing after.
a pitty, sincerely, cause i liked. unknew clash comments (one of my favourites too)but i'm sure that if they had been doing songs we would probably have talking about one of the best bands nowdays.
Beatles eat your hearts out! One of the best lead singers singing one of the best songs by one of the best (and most underrated) groups ever. Brilliant!
Good to see I am in good company here (well most of you anyway) This song was also one of my Favs from the second LP. But really, as a true Knack Fan can we actually pick a Favorite ? I can say my favorite line was "You smoked me like a cigarette, I was burned I was cast aside"(Can't put a price on Love) Talk about creative lyrics !Over 25 years later I still play theses CD's regularly...Best LP to come out of the 80's. Thanks for posting this priceless video. I Loved it!!!!
Thanks for posting this video! OMG! I never knew there was a video to it! There should be a Video Compilation of The Knack on DVD! The first 2 albums totally kicked booty! Nearly Every Song on them could have been released as a single! I'm just thankful that they are still around, touring. This band needs a turn at Hall Of Fame. YOU ROCK!
Oh my god, I love this song, it's my favorite song from the Knack's second album "but the little girls understand", I had never seen a video, rare, but tremendous, thanks for posting!
I like Hold Tight and Don't let go. That tune and this one should have been the lead off hits from this lp. Baby Talks dirty was a bad My Sharona clone, and an over the top one with it's shamelessly smutty lyrics. They were in enough hot water with the fans and critics at the time they put this one out. It just killed their momentum. Sad, really-They could've been the next Beatles. Well....almost.
Wow, I thought I was the only one who felt this song should have been their first release, I also feel that It's You, Hard Way, and Can't Put A Price on Love were strong songs also. Actually this album was released in Feb. of 1980, when songs from Get The Knack were still getting strong play on the radio. Too bad they didn't hold off on this release date until people were dying to hear some new stuff. Still though a real good album.
get the dvd, Getting the Knack for the whole story from their beginnings to the present day. Bruce Gary was still alive when they made this documentary so he is interviewed throughout.
I bought the dvd the week it came out, and it's tremendous, love all the very cool footage, it's very well made and they pull no punches in explanation of their rise and unfortunate fall. Bruce Gary the original drummer, and the best.
the knack's album that contains my sharona is actually one of the best albums ever made. No idea why all the other songs, and the band, failed. just must have been bad timimg in the music market of the time.
the cd is still my first choice for the best music to drive with. this somg kicks ass.
@bluebagger7 Bluebagger, apparently the critics had problems with Beatles comparisons (get over it) but, unfortunately, there were a lot of songs on that album "Get the Knack" that had some pretty dirty lyrics. According to the album's producer the "f" word was discreetly used in the chorus of "My Sharona", and it was liberally thrown around in the song "(She's so) Selfish". I agree, though, that album was chock full of great songs. This one should have been among them. Wow.
the Drumming is awesome!!! This ws one of my fav songs of this band. I didn't hear it in some 27 years!!! I recorded in my first tape, I think i was hand-holding my tape (non-stereo) recorder in front of the TV-set to save the music. (Excuse, I live in the Third-World).

That is a great line from Can't Put a Price on Love, good call, these guys were very good song writers, ahh the teen age love blues, they
captured that misery! One of my favorite lines
from Frustrated was, "Calling Chicken Delight,
because the flesh is on the bone and she ain't
giving you a bite", ...classic.

I didn't know the knack made a video for this song. Sounds like a Beatles song. I like it!

Trivia: Doug Fieger's brother is Geoff Fieger, Jack Kevorkian's lawyer and frequent legal contributor to a lot of talk shows.

the knack's album that contains my sharona is actually one of the best albums ever made.

Thanks a lot, man
