  • how did that not kill him

  • @clodge631992 he was just one of the very few lucky ones

  • @clodge631992 NASCAR has been all about safety for a long time. They really make it safer than ever. Him surviving shows the safety built into these trucks and he had someone looking out for him

  • I remember watching this wreck live and just going "He's dead..." Most accidents that people are killed in don't look this bad. I know they didn't show any replays live until they confirmed he was alive first.

  • I remember watching this race live. I thought he was dead. The announcers think he is dead too by their tone as soon as the truck hits the wall. Amazing that he survived. Many people don't know this but Geoff Bodine built the bobsleds used by the US Olympic team at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

  • You know some serious shit went down in a race when they go to commercial like they did.

  • "uh oh"

  • "Look Out, We Got Trouble! This Is Gonna Hurt!"

    LOL Marty Reid FAIL.

  • OUCH what a wreck

  • datz usualy wat u say to sum1 after a bad day well yung buck -_-

  • WORST DAYTONA CRASH EVER!

  • When Benny says "Yep," I can't help but thinking he said in his head, "yep...he's dead!"

  • @girlcandream lol my thoughts exactly.

  • Jeff my all time favorite driver watched him as a kid in upstate NY. Miss you Jeff.

  • @KingDarkCoven geoff

  • @rmendel100 My Bad , I often drink a bit to much and make errors like that XD.

  • flip i think u mean flips -_- lol

  • HOLY _

  • i miss benny parsons ;(

  • @AEMoreira81 The trucks create so much drag plus not having quite as much power as a cup car that they can get away without plates. If you look at the telemetry in this video the truck was under 180 in the tri-oval, which is close if not slower than the cup cars.

  • i saw this shit live when it happened i was like WHAT THE FUCK no way

  • I have to wonder---what was NASCAR thinking by running these trucks wide-open at Daytona when the cars had restrictor plates on them?

  • look out we got trouble this is gonna hurt! ya think.

  • I was there that day and the whole place was silent after this. Everyone thought they had just witnessed a fatal accident. I think it was about 30 minutes later that Todd Bodine announced to the crowd that his brother had survived and was stable.

  • I am actually doing a social studies project on the crashes that changed nascar's history and safety features and boy was this a hard hit

  • Got this race on tape up to the crash then they switched to ESPN2 because of the delay and I missed it becase we didn't have it at the time. The way the guys were talking, that's what I remember best. Ray Evernham saying "Uh oh," you knew it was bad.

Yes they were running without plates but the truck body created a lot of drag so they could get away with it.

  • I usually like seeing wrecks in NASCAR races, but not near-fatal or fatal crashes.

I don't want to see anyone seriously hurt or dead out there.

And I think that his wrecked car from this is on display somewhere.

  • It's weird how in an accident like this the driver survives yet in a small simple crash Dale Sr. there's a fatality.

  • i saw a doco on this crash and apparently a few people in the crowd where pretty messed up from that first fire ball cause the flames went right in!!! it was a long time ago i saw cant remember exactly, but one woman was pretty burned

  • Those trucks were running without the restricter plate when they first raced at Daytona back in 2000.

  • Comment removed

  • man how can a truck flip like that i knew that he was probally dead

  • That prooves there is a god because bodine survived that crash. They said that his helmet has marks from scraping the pavment...

  • Holy crap man. I was just look up some crashes in Nascar but dam man this was probable the worst crashes i scene in my lifetime. I hope he still alive.OMG.

  • @TheSlickSpencer He is. This was back in 2000. He's still kicking. I d'no if he's racing anymore, though.

  • @ArmadeusXxC He still does a few races. He spends most of his time working on bobsleds for the US Olympic Team

  • And this is why they have restrictor plates. They werent running restrictor plates at this race (i think it was one of the 1st few races for the trucks on a superspeedway) and now they have them

  • thats got to be a red flag!

  • 0:14-0:15 u=guy on black shirt get zesty fire..

  • how did he survive? did anyone get hurt in the audience?

  • @pokemonrulz1231 geoff bodine did...

  • @pokemonrulz1231 wow fail sorry XD

  • it's pretty eerie looking at this after the legends race at bristol incident. Marty Reid must have had a hell of a flashback, he said almost the the same thing at bristol he did here. Its sad much happened between daytona 2000 and 2001 (this horrific crash, adam petty, kenny irwin jr, and dale).

  • Geoff was talking about this on NASCAR's Sirius/XM channel the other day and he said he saw his dad and he(Geoff) thought he died and then his dad said it isn't his time yet.

It's incredible that he survived with as small injuries that he did.

  • Love how he says "This is gonna hurt!" Then he seemingly dies in a horrible wreck. As for the Dale Earnhardt question....he hit the wall head on, snapping his neck, where as Geoff disapated the energy over a long distance. Yes he had trama to his extremities (his arms are flailing around as he is tumbling) but his head and neck was relatively unscathed. I recorded this on my VCR back then and I still have it .

  • No i don't get why Geoff bodine didn't die from this, but Dale earnhardt hit the wall and died

  • The truck flipped up into the catch fence, then it continued to bounce off of the fence and other trucks, I was watching it live, 10 years ago I believe, i remember thinking, there is no way he lived, it was a miracle he didn't die.

  • Nice magic trick. But really, were did the truck go?

  • Beastin it.

  • At least Bodine in his truck (or what would be left of it) kept going ahead...saving Bodine's life (but breaking just about his entire right side).

  • @NismoFinder You know what I'm still quite glad this crash wasn't fatal, cos' this crash is worse than most fatal crashes that have happened in Nascar.

  • Geoff broke his right wrist, right cheekbone, a vertebra in his back, and his right ankle, and also suffered a concussion. Nine fans were also injured in the accident.

i got this on wikipedia hope it helps if anyone was wondering thank god he survived

  • Did he died?

  • Geoff Bodine is dead, its Jeff Bodine that's still racing or maybe it's the other way around....

  • @AceNinja2112 You are a friggen idiot! I've spoken with Geoff Bodine personally about this crash 2 years ago and he's perfectly fine now. His heart DID stop momentarily in this crash but when it started pumping again and he came to, all he had were minor injuries (broken finger + ribs / concussion / bruises and such)..Dumbass.

  • @NismoFinder B.S.! I talked to him the other day and he is definitely still dead. You may be referring to his brother Jeff Bodine....he is alive and well and still racing.

  • @AceNinja2112 Geoff Bodine doesn't have a brother named Jeff...

  • @mzxrules Yes he does! The Bodine Brothers were an institution of NASCAR racing before the big crash that ended Geoff's life. Brother Jeff maintains the family legacy and contines to race to this day.

  • @AceNinja2112 yep, you're definitely trollin'.

  • @AceNinja2112 ummmm......Geoff is alive, Brett never turned into anything, and Todd is still a sniveling little shit who races like its Days of Thunder. Geoff was one of my favorites back when though. His worst luck in Cup was going to Bud Moore, which by then was already a second rate team.

  • @AceNinja2112 their the same people

  • I hope that no fans were hurt by that brief fire at 0:14.

  • @barneynward 6 or 7 had minor burns and cuts and needed to be taken to the hospital, but nothing major thankfully.

  • RIP Geoff, you are sorely missed!

  • @AceNinja2112 He didnt die

  • @ORIANPSP He's as dead as a doornail ! Look it up! No one can have an accident like that and survive. RIP Jeff Bodine ;(

  • @AceNinja2112 I don't actually find it funny to call people dead when they are alive...

  • @AceNinja2112 He didnt die he raced in the winston cup series in 2003

  • how did he survive that? his truck EXPLODED into a ball of fire into the catchfence, then barrelrolled, like 7 times, then got hit by, like 2 trucks. he must have a VERY strong spirit in order 2 survive that

  • HOLP CARP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i bet the people behind the fence shit when the truck exploded

  • the guy behind the fence who got burned survived? If he did, it´s really a miracle.

  • @jaredc621

All forms of racing is unpredictable, not just NASCAR

  • This remided me of Bobby Allison's crash at Talladaga in 1986. Just as violent

  • Comment removed

  • since he got hit alot he could gotton killed

  • nasty crash T_T

  • I was watching this live at a restaurant and the whole place went silent, Everyone thought he was killed . It is amazing he survived.

  • "This is gonna hurt"

  • Its amazing how that catch fence held up

  • he broke no bones and back and didnt fracture his cheek

  • @aero4ev

    yes he did

  • My uncle is amazingly in the best condition. We are so happy he is alive!

  • he lived

  • @penske369 they've got allen bestwick

  • I got this on tape. I dubbed it to a DVD. ESPN waited about 20 minutes before they started showing replays. They did this out of respect because everyone thought Geoff was dead.

  • @barb1fisher

    I remember that...

  • Is there longer vids of this?

  • I'm sorry but what kind of an idiot says "oh look out! This is gonna hurt!" when an accident happens? I mean sure, he didn't realize the accident would be that severe, but still/ Marty Reid is possibly one of the most overrated broadcasters ever/

  • @penske369 Maybe because they are running close to 200mph! that'd be my guess

  • @wardaddy08 Still, that's not a good call. No matter how fast you are going or where at or whatever the situation is, don't say something like that.

  • @penske369 I agree.

  • marty reid is a hell of alot better than jerry punch

  • @menard98 Jerry Punch is a really good pit reporter, and a below average play-by-play person. Reid falls in that category as well (sans pit reporter). But honestly, who does ESPN have anymore that can do play-by-play?

  • i was there.i was a few rows up from the fire ball

  • man you must have shit yourself from that close haha. when was this anyway?

  • Was watching live on TV when this happened. I was absolutely certain I had just watched Geoff Bodine's death! It is some kind of a miracle that he survived. In fact, he has no serious health issues related to the crash.

  • I've been to one Nascar race. Dover Downs in the 80's. Geoff Bodine won in the Levi Garrett chevrolet.

I still can't believe he waved to the crowd as he was being removed from this crash.

  • how could anybody survive somethin like this. Geoff ur a tough son of a gun

  • my parents met Geoff back in c.1990

  • =O was he ok?!?

  • He was in a coma for a while after this, and coulda-woulda-shoulda died in this accident, but somehow survived. As someone already mentioned though, he was in contention to win the Daytona 500 2 years later.

  • few at least he was ok :)

  • I love Daytona!

  • im friends with his nephew hunter

  • Look how that 42 truck just T-BONED the 52 truck @ 0:24. Thats gotta hurt.

  • It was Rob Morgans fault. What a bone head.

  • This is when the truck series was known as tough trucks tough drivers.

  • You could tell the announcers thought he died. It really is a miracle he survived, but his saving grace was probably that he never had a sudden stop or shift in momentum. Incredibly, he was racing 6 months later and was in contention to win the 2002 Daytona 500.

It's a horrible crash and I hope we never see anything like it again. Those who look forward to accidents like this are not true fans. Being fans of hard racing is one thing, but people who look forward to this are sick.

  • yea the way they cut to commercial and benny parsons i think was just like....yup. he had nothing else to say

  • he should have been dead....someone upstairs must like him

  • When i saw this live i honestly thought he was dead.

  • @maybrook1 me 2

  • i watched this live on my lunch break. saw the accident and had to go back to work. told my boss,a big nacar fan, i think bodine is dead. thank the lord he survived the worse wreck i've ever seen in my nascar life. craftsman... tough trucks...tough drivers.

  • I was actually at this race when it happened. me and a friend were sittin 17 rows up from where the truck entered the fence. it was horrific. we felt the heat and debree from the truck. security and emergency responce teams done a very good job in making sure every1 was attended too. its a miracle that bodine lived to see another day!

  • Those guys were too close to the racetrack, there so unlucky

  • I just noticed this too at about 0:16 the secruity guards wearing the yellow jackets when the truck hit the fence literally get thrown backwards like 10 feet from the pure force of the impact.

  • right away the announcers were like fuck he's dead. They weren't like "OMG What an accident!" They were like oh shit...

  • Geoff is one toough dude and it is always wonderful to hear Benny's voice again. I really miss Benny,, I really bummed when he died :( I feel he was one of the very best in the booth.

  • Damn, Son!!! GEOFF BODINE WAS SO LUCKY IN THAT ONE!THAT WAS QUITE UGLY!! AND SOUNDED UGLY, AS WELL!!

  • Racing just isnt the same as it used to be.

  • Sure miss Benny in the booth! Lot better the uh uh dale uh uh jarrett an lip smacking "JAMIE!!" Doc Punch.

  • very lucky he survived! If anyone winds up in Mooresville, NC, visit the Memory Lane Museum (its on 150, just ask around for directions). It has tons of historic nascar racecars, including Bodine's truck crash that you just watched!

  • I can see how he survived on the initial crash, but that second hit was so bad at :24 that it's hard to comprehend his survival.

  • I talked to Geoff in 2007 about this crash at a Q&A session in Daytona and he said that he momentarily was dead because the impact so violent on the second hit his heart stopped but it wasn't long enough for any side-effects to occur. (this is what he was told when the Doctor did a full check-up)

  • as anyone died??

  • Surprisingly, NOBODY died.

  • jeez look at the security guy in yellow at 0:16 i bet he shit himself

  • but yeh my dad was right above the crash too. he said it was jsut horrible.

  • back injury and a broken wrist :O

  • his engine flew out the truck and shot down the racetrack

  • Why Geoff Bodine survived the crash: His momentum didn't suddenly stop and kept moving forward as what was the #15 LINE-X truck disintegrted.

  • You could tell the announcers thought he was dead.

  • you could tell everyone thought he was dead

  • Which is better MRN or PRN

  • Holy crap, it is Chuck. Hes at a race. There is still hope for NASCAR

  • 0:16 Anybody notice that guy in black? He doesnt even flinch. I cant help but think thats Chuck Norriss LOL!

  • lol i know haha.

  • Did you see his interview from the hospital the next day from his bed? Face was swolen like a pumpkin and black and blue. Damn, he looked so bad. Can't believe he survived that. That was the worst NASCAR wreck, ever.

  • no, the worst one is when the man in black died, the intimadator will always b the best

  • Well, yeah, that was a loss NASCAR will never recover from, but I was talking about the sheer scope of carnage, fire and wreckage from one incident.

  • He was one of the best but his wreck wasn't bad at all. The only reason he died from that was from his own stubbornness by refusing to wear the HANS device.

  • If you are talking about Earnhardt, he wasn't the only one who would not wear a HANS device. Many drivers wouldn't wear it because they just could not move their head around like they wanted to during a race.

It it wasn't Earnhardt that was going to get killed, it would be someone else.

  • Oh I realize he wasn't the only one that refused to wear the HANS device, but everyone who did refuse to wear it was being stubborn. Unfortunately someone was going to die eventually from a crash like that, and it just happened to be him, but it was technically his own fault.

  • No the HANS device was invented long before Dale Sr.'s death, and NASCAR had already started using it, but he refused to wear it claiming they were uncomfortable and he couldn't see anything.

  • ur face is ugly f1v1!

  • Lol, I <3 you Bailey

  • It was invented....It just was not a requirement...

  • Actually, I believe it went into use the year before, and I know it wasn't made mandatory until sometime around mid-2001. Open-faced helmets were also phased out (at least for the most part) right around the same time.

  • ..yes it was. It wasn't mandatory until after.

  • That would suck if there was an applebees comercial after that.

  • that sucks that you have a vagina.

  • Comment removed

  • got to love that Talladega Nights reference.

  • he's alive....i guess thats the only other way lmao

  • He lived? That is a crazy crash (:^|

  • im 19 now but i lived in clearwater beach and when i was younger i was actually at this race in the infield with an rv. i still remember watching the fireball and cloud of smoke when he wrecked. amazing he lived

  • This is why he now only drives the pace car. It's nice that NASCAR let's him do that, shows respect.

  • Brett Bodine drives the pace car. Geoffery still drives sometimes in the #64.

  • OMG!!!!!! geoff actually survived this!!! i bet lots of people thought he was dead on impact not to mention all the spectators in the way!!! when i seen this for the first time i was shocked to see that some one could have actually survived that. when the truck disintigrated thats when your hearts stops and you wait to find out if the guy dead or alive.

  • hats off to Marty Reid's play by play "Oh look out this is gonna hurt." He said it before he even went airborne

  • he's really lucky my father no him, after the crash he took a product called Mona-vie, he said that helped him ALOT after the crash and sped up the recouvery, but he is really lucky to servive that.

  • 9 fans got injured too..

  • 10 FANS GOT INJURED

  • at 0:30 you could tell everyone thought he was dead

  • oh yeah. they really thought that. and with good reason.

  • He still races... he tried qualifying for the Daytona 500 this year.

  • oh ok

  • He's got a lot of guts to hop in a car after THAT. If I didn't get killed in such a crash, I'd at least have shitted a hole in my pants.
