I never thought anyone could do that song justice with a cover, Lennon's original is so amazing.
personally I prefer Lennon's, but this is just amazing. In my opinion the best song green day has done, no offence to their own songs or anything I just think this is one of lennon's best and there is no embaressment in not being as good as the legendary john lennon.
Green Day did a very great job with this song. However, some songs are just meant to be sung by the original artist. This is one of those songs... But, as some of you had said, it is a way to get the message across to todays generation.
I'd agree that since Green Day has alot of listeners that it's good to get John's message across to a wider and newer audience.
BUT the meaning of this song really doesn't go too well with the genocide in Sudan. Lennon's words were much more about industrial and socialized countries (As he talks about 20 odd years of schooling).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this blows. i mean it. if you listen to john lennon passionately sing with heartfelt words and real feeling then listen to this shit...its a disgrace. let johns music be his and no one elses. a musical god and prophetic inspirer like john and his music should not be re made or messed up. they wont even swear in this video, john would never be afraid to say exactly what was on his mind. leave his music alone, no one can sing it the way he does, there is no emotion here.
THIS SONG IS SPEAKING ABOUT THE *PIG BROTHER*'s SCARY SATANIC SYSTEM HANGING ON IN UK,USA and FRIENDS...NOT SPEAKING ABOUT DARFUR MY DEAR MASTER's PUPPETS(Greed day...or something like that)...
i love lennon, and i like green day, and i consider that's good they worry about racism and other stuff, buuuuuut: THIS SONG IS ABSOLUTLY NOT RELATED TO THE TOPIC, my interpretation is how society make you feel small and become working class, the hero who build cities,,,
in the year of 1970 John Lennon could give his songs every type of sound which he likes. If he make it as a full folk protest song - this is how how he wanted it be. Not with hard guitars at the end
I think this video is great! It's sending a message how bad the world ignore the violence that the "black" people is getting. They get kicked in their stomachs. They are just like the rest of us!
well it foesnt really but theres no point in doing a cover and not put your own interpretation on it. tbh im not really into this version but it would of been silly to mkae it like lennons. theres only one john lennon lol
I like the way they bring the the key down to the original Lennon version at the end. I hope as Lennon hoped that one day soon there will be peace in Africa.
what fucking rubbish you say here??? this is about the working class, it's not for anyone... do you fucking even know what this "working class' is??? oh GOD! you think that working class is anyone who works????
2 things one green day is a great band and this song even touched my friend and he's like into heavy metal and that. Also Green day's spreading a good message here
love the song and the messages it holds, but cant understand why they have too edit out the f word when the nasty crimes that have been commited to these poor people (which shouldnt be swept under the carpet)are fully explicit. Its a bit of a condratiction you tube!!!!
Why would you hate Green Day for making a cover of John Lennon's song? Clearly they respect the man alot, and they made a cover of his song to help spread peace, as far as I know thats what John Lennonw was about, he would be proud if he saw this.
Not to mention the cover is extremely well done, maybe you'll notice if you play the song without the video.
John Lennon's cover in my personal opinion is better as it has a simpler way- yet I still enjoy this as it appeals to others. A lot of my friends started listening to more of Lennon's stuff after hearing the lyrics within this- and also become more active with fights such as Darfur because of it.
I hate it when people hear a cover and dont know who really wrote it , and who diserves the credit. like that target commercial and it has hello goodbye and people are always like oh I love that target commercial song.
but I think both the songs are good, the John lennons way is clear and simple. but the green day version has more of an appeal to todays generation. but I like the john Lennons version better
What the fuck does how he looks have to do with how good or bad the cover is. I'm actually lost for words to describe how fucking stupid that statement makes you sound.
come on guys....it's just a cover(and i think billy did a good job)...in my opinion with this cover they show their love to this song and to john....don't hate them come'on thats disrespectful.
this makes me hate green day even more, im a huge john lennon fan and its so overdone, john lennons verson is simple the message is clear this is crap :/ sorry
It's just another version of another song. It will happen forever and often times the current generation never knows when they hear a cover. It's stupid to argue about better or worse. Regardless of that, it's a respectable song to cover. It's a powerful song!
the video is kinda misleading, perhaps o it wouldn't attract much controversy. Cuz what John Lennon meant was everybody, the song is about everybody basically, that's how things are run.
WHY SHOULDN'T they do that???? It's where the shit is happening, as we write... but no one gives a damn. I guess there's no so much oil in that country...
This is a great cover.Personally I love the original better, something about John Lennon's voice,it just sends shivers down my spine. But Green Day did an awesome job.
People are dyeing all around the world. Nevertheless, you feel you need to bleep out the word "fuck". Who ever dyed from saying the word "fuck"? No one. Who is dyeing now in Iraq, Iran, Georgia, Africa, Tibet, and many other places? Whom are you saving by bleeping out the word "fuck"? I wish we spent that much effort that we do bleeping out the word "fuck" and protecting and help the lives of the people of the world who are suffering.
I'll tell you who died because of the word fuck. People are ignorant => people swear at each other => people get mad at each other => people hate each other => people start fights and even wars. So you see, words are important as well. They can do much more harm than actual physical violence.
i love the original but green day puts a new twist on it i love this song thanks to john lennon and every one in green day for showing everyone what the real world is like mainely john lennon for creating this song but green day for putting real problems in it
i love this song and i sympathize with the plight of these people, but what does this lennon song have to do with anything going on in the video. The imagery just doesn't fit
billy only want is freedom. if you connect all their songs together, you will know the life of saint jimmy, whoes a freedom fighter, who just want freedom
yea but freedom from establishment and comformity not a genocide, I mean the genocide is bad and should be stopped, but it has nothing to do with this song, for crying out loud, Lennon died in 1980.
theyre both good though, but john lennon's version is definetely better. good that they left the last line for john lennon. though i dont think lennon was singing about ethnic cleansing in darfur or something, so i dont think this video fits well

This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i prefer this song to the original by lennon. This songs is soo awsum and the vid is sooo meaningful. Btw- the solo part by billie is sooo fuckin awsum. Green Day rocks!!!!!!!
i hope that people learn something from this video. it is really insightful and makes light of a very real and disturbing problem that people think never happens because it isnt happening to them. a really well done video.
The video was made to raise awareness for the genocide that has been going on in Darfur since 2004/2005. The video isn't about the working class, it's not about how poor Africa is. It is about the injustice that's going on there, about the hatred equivalent to Pol Pot or Hitler or any like those and North America has been so preoccupied by the war that nobody gives proper attention to the greater tragedy that was going on there
The point of covering a song is to make it some what your own, that being said, im pretty sure they were taking the most recent actions against extremists like people who kill for ethical cleansing and saying thats cruel to humanity, you have to get the message not just take the lyrics, the message is a working class person is the same as some one who is CEO of a major corporation, thats the message
the video is great , the song is great .but ,why is there no white guy in it ?don't think the majority of the black ppl are working class heroes .how about some chinese ?it's a cheap interpretation of the song ,has no power ,voice is covered by instruments ,a good band can record a a song cover like this one in 1 day .
i really love this song and video i think its sad but if you look at 1.31 to 1.33 you can se Tré with a hilarius face but i dont know why to put someting that unserius into something that seruis but it made me smile a little i cant help it Tré got so funny faces but i like Billie Joe the most ;)
If I'm honest, I don't really know what I'm talking about now. I only said my original comment because it annoyed me that you can be thumbed up for a comment saying only Indians are truly American, but if you told any other ethnic minority they weren't a true American, people would be all over you about it.
I figure if you live in American, you're American and if you live in Britain, you're British. They're not races, they're countries and if you're a citizen of that country, you should count as a real-whatever. It's not like I'm trying to be too politically correct either. If you're African, and you have a child with someone from Iraq, and your child is raised in France, would they really be French? If not, what would they be? Just call people by the country they live in. It's simpler.
good good

i hope that people learn something from this video. it is really insightful and makes light of a very real and disturbing problem that people think never happens because it isnt happening to them. a really well done video.

the u.s don't care about Darfur, simply because the have no oil.

agree with that

The video was made to raise awareness for the genocide that has been going on in Darfur since 2004/2005. The video isn't about the working class, it's not about how poor Africa is. It is about the injustice that's going on there, about the hatred equivalent to Pol Pot or Hitler or any like those and North America has been so preoccupied by the war that nobody gives proper attention to the greater tragedy that was going on there

Great video, but it'd be allot better if there wasn't so much talking during the song.

AmurgAprins 3 years ago
You're right: also occidental men are working class hero, not only chinese...

i really love this song and video i think its sad but if you look at 1.31 to 1.33 you can se Tré with a hilarius face but i dont know why to put someting that unserius into something that seruis but it made me smile a little i cant help it Tré got so funny faces but i like Billie Joe the most ;)

Tre went to clown college sometime before he got famous so that explains his crazy antics

I was surprised you started replying to me. Did I not make my original comment to Peglol96? My bad if I didn't.
olliegibbons 3 years ago
If I'm honest, I don't really know what I'm talking about now. I only said my original comment because it annoyed me that you can be thumbed up for a comment saying only Indians are truly American, but if you told any other ethnic minority they weren't a true American, people would be all over you about it.
olliegibbons 3 years ago
I figure if you live in American, you're American and if you live in Britain, you're British. They're not races, they're countries and if you're a citizen of that country, you should count as a real-whatever. It's not like I'm trying to be too politically correct either. If you're African, and you have a child with someone from Iraq, and your child is raised in France, would they really be French? If not, what would they be? Just call people by the country they live in. It's simpler.
