Percy Grainger is notorious for making the last note of the oboe part murder to play, this song being a major example. It ends with a p going to either pp or ppp low C. A major pain in the butt. Another of his songs end on a low C# at pp and that's even worse lol.
@LS6Silverado you don't have to be one of the best at something to give criticism. If you can hear an issue, you can give criticism. Not only that, but the criticism was given both in good nature (prefaced with the point that he still loves the song and the performance) and the nitpicking nature of it was noted. It was valid criticism given in good faith.
@1WFE3 Didnt you know that the last note for the 1st horn player is an Eb Grace note !!!!! ;-) Seriously though, give the guy a break !! Fantastic performance all round.....
@noelhodgers I'm so sorry I must have over looked my score, ahahaha! Yes AMAZING performance, that was like the biggest nit picked comment in the world.
The 1st clarinets in my band are lacking the proper tone quality as of right now (we're only in high school), so they sound rather screechy. In this performance, they sounded soooo lovely. And I heard the 2nd clarinets :) I'm partial to my part.
I've never heard of this director, but I think he is good. However, I feel the first three chords could have had slight fermattas for emotional effect, but I am not sure if Grainger would have wanted it that way.
This is one of my favorite Percy Grainger songs and I think this is probably one of the best recordings I've heard of it. I love when the oboe comes in at 2:10. I've played this piece many times and as a trumpet player this is very fun and emotional to play.
@froehlichc1 a Professor from a collage? I think if you see pictures moving, it's time to lay off the acid. You're too young to be ruining your brain with hallucinogenics.
Our High school is playing this piece & I have absolutely adore this piece!! Grainger is one of my favorite composers of all time! Last year, my band director announced her resigning of our band to be a director at Univer. of Texas at Austin, for our last song with her, we played Magnum Mysterium by Lauridsen. Really good piece. This year as I play this song, it'll will bring memories of her as well as High School memories as this is the last piece I will play before graduating... Nicely played
Thanks msgooi for fast reply. Is it possible to have other usefull informations? I'd like to buy the same version played by ARMAB, so it's necessary to know more detailed info (editor, grade...).
This song is beautiful. I didn't know the significance of County Derry when my band started playing it, but subsequently found out. We're playing this at our winter concert today. So beautiful!
This song is so sad once you know what it means, like the meaning. But the music is so beautiful. I love everything of it; I played this piece at a festival before and it was just amazing. This song really pulls my heart strings. :3
At my school my band teacher had to scream at the trombones to pley the crescendos

This is glorius! Way back when I was in H.S., I/am primarily a trumpet player. Our
director was ill & needed a leader to get
the horn section into shape. He chose me! By U.I.L. contest time, he was well -
enough to direct. Our horn section was on
fire! But,2 clarinets had bad reeds. Neither
of which changed a reed or dropped out.
The judges praised our horns mightily, but, we lost a rating because of 2 clarinets
upon which they focused. How sad!!!
