  • Problem is it isn't about Britain it is about asking a God what there is no proof exists to save one person.... who is unelected.

  • I think the National Anthem was played to make everybody turn off quick.

Everyone hates that fecking tune in Britain.

  • @seehispugnosedface Not everyone: I like it.

  • After the anthem was played, the screen would go blank, and then a bleeping noise was heard for several minutes.

  • @31cify "Don't forget to turn off your set" lol

  • tell me about it.

  • @SPTSuperSprinter156 - If you are trying to de-grade out country, Britain because you are butthurt they didn't play the American national anthem, go crawl back to where you came. You under-aged overrated basterd.

  • @9x0x0x1

You might want to read my comment again. I was err.. "butthurt" that it's considered unpolitically correct to be proud to be British anymore. I'm British, and I'm here, so nowhere to crawl to. Also you mispelled bastard.

  • I wouldn't mind a new national anthem being played when the TV is closed down, but as an Atheist, and a Republican, I object to being forced to sing a national anthem extolling the values of two things I am fiercely opposed to.

  • @ SPTSuperSprinter156

It's 'politically incorrect', not 'unpolitically correct'

  • @ SPTSuperSprinter156

It's 'politically incorrect', not 'unpolitically correct'

  • They showed the test card from 3.00 AM onwards.

  • Any reason for people to start on Muslims

  • The new government should introduce a law compelling the BBC to play the national anthem at midnight every night and all BBC channels. It would be a popular and almost free piece of legislation and would remind the BBC who they work for. Other countries play theirs even though there is 24 hr TV.

  • @pieface4475 your right that will show that they work for her majesty and that it is a british company because right now the bbc doesn't show that like they use to.

  • Vive la république ! Mort aux tyrans ! Sus aux monarques !

  • *stands and salute*

  • as it is the national broadcaster the should at least play the national anthem at midnight on one of the BBC channels!

  • 0:24 - Should I stand up when this starts? lol

  • Oh, yes!

  • next day,

    oct 4th 1997

     7:03 a.m.

    that was good!!!

  • i think you know what im gonna say: next moring... BOOOOOOOM! boxs with bb and c! nope no say!

  • thats the way to do a closedown god save the queen!!!!

  • well bedtime now for bbc1 but

well it's good night and sleep well

    (what)

    anita

  • itvhearts is right about the BBC2 start in 1997 with aerial ident. At 7:03 a.m. on Oct. 4, 1997, The BBC1 Global Balloon ident was started with English 9.

  • the national anthem should be played when bbc 1 changes to bbc news 24, it gives a sense of national identity.

  • Why not start a worldwide campaign?

  • to be honest bbc2 is the only bbc station that stills making closedowns.i think they closedown if they don't broadcast the learning zone or after it.

  • By the way, the only reason why Mr. Vowels did not say about the change of the BBC1 are:

He forgot to say about the BBC Corporate Logo.

He left something understated: The BBC1 Global Balloon (Globalloon). He left it with a BIG surprise because days before the demise of the BBC1 Virtual Globe, these were already filmed across the United Kingdom.

    Shame on you, Mr. Vowels!

  • Time: 2:57 a.m.

Date: Oct. 3, 1997 (Early Hours of Oct. 4, 1997

    Announcer: Phil Vowels

This is the last spin of the BBC1 Virtual Globe Identification, which started last February 16, 1991.

This one lasted 6 years and more than 7 months from Feb. 16, 1991 to Oct. 4, 1997.

  • He should have told them the news of the change on all the BBC channels and the future of the BBC AND it's logo.

  • on *both* BBC channels

  • I bet when people tuned into BBC1 the next morning, many would have wished they hadn't woken up...

  • Oi, the balloons were brilliant!

  • Can you tell I'm not a fan? I simply think the 1991 - 1997 era had the slickest and most aesthetically pleasing presentation TV has ever had.

  • GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!!

  • OMG this was on my 4th birthday!

  • I think its quite upsetting that they did this to viewers not knowing what would be shown as of the following day.

  • switching to the radio through the night, god save the queen, halcyon days

  • lol remember when you used to be lay on the couch watching tv then this comes on about midnight and it makes you tired because they waffle on and then saying wishing a peacfull night good night

it used to make me tired hahah lol

oh then id fall asleep on the couch straight after hahaha

  • well the times varied much more greatly than "around midnight" - check the time on this one!

  • Closedown backs In BBC News 24.

  • I think all these guys mean is a "proper" closedown, with a gap in programming and a transmitter shut down.

  • i wonder why phil vowels didn't metion the balloon tommorrow morning

  • he wanted to leave it a big surprise!

  • didnt remember aclosedown as late as 97.3am was a bit late though.

  • 9:73am? Don't you know your times then?

    2:57am!

  • That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. 97:3am? ITS 2:57 AM YOU IDIOT.

Go and shoot yourself if you really can't tell the time.

  • yes, bbc2 got the aerial ident at the start.

  • i say bring this back!!!!!

    GOD SAVE THE QUEEN

  • I say don't

TELEVISION HAS MOVED ON. GET OVER IT!!!!!

  • Yep, we ALL love to see celebrity crap, reality tv and generally boring stuff that nobody cares about. Gotta love it. I mean, sure, tv was better back then, but hey, its not like millions of people watch it every day, right?

Wouldn't you like to see quality shows on BBC, instead of repeats? I sure would.

  • I would like to see quality shows, yes. But television has moved on from non-24hr broadcasting.

and there is such a thing as fresh air and the great outdoors ya know!

enjoy goin out? I know I do.

  • Exactly! Sounds like a funeral durge.

  • Glad you agree!

  • Boring or not its a sign of Britain. It's just as well we don't have the anthem these days; we'd probably be sued for being British, having our own identity, being proud to be British, being British, being racist, being unpolitically correct, well, anything really. Celebrating Christmas or flying your flag is even considered unpolitically correct now. Britain sucks these days.

  • @SPTSuperSprinter156 Sorry to hear buddy.

  • @SPTSuperSprinter156 No it isn't. Just because the papers tell you that, doesn't make it true.

  • @SPTSuperSprinter156 DIE BNP NAZI

  • @SPTSuperSprinter156 that is the best thing to come out of britan yet great patriots are being called politicaly incorect for beliving in ther country this countrys going to pices

  • perhaps they should do the closedown then switchover to bbc24,perhaps thats an idea

  • lets get rid of news 24 and bring back the shutdown!

  • NOOOO - I dont like the scary test card beeps!

  • Yeah, they used to freak me out as a small child: WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...

  • Comment removed

  • I agree, the shutdown and associated testcard and whine was less repetitive and monotonous than having the exact same news items repeated every 10 minutes over and over for hours.

  • I'd rather sit and watch a beeping testcard than BBC shite 24.

  • what i meant above is that they seemed caring and genuine from 1980 and before to about late 90s, not this guy obviously though, listen to him.

  • this announcer doesn't seem very genuine or caring unfprtunately, like many of them did from 1980 - 1997 or so.

  • Anyone been mental enough to actually dance to that awful monotone after the closedown?

  • Neil from The Young Ones tried this in the episode Summer Holiday before an irate Vyvyan smashed the tv

  • Yeah i remember that episode,i've got it on video!!!

  • Go to bed, spotty! ;)

  • if u r ill try to get back to this soon!

  • who is with me to write to the bbc requesting rto bring back this ending????

  • I am with you!! Much better than BBC News 24. I liked the BBC hot air balloon as well, they should have done it with that lol, also what about the clock at the end or before the news or even regional idents?! I think you should write to the BBC ;)

  • gr8 stuff!

  • I agree better than News 24

  • how did we manage back then without 24hour tv? lol

  • They could at least play the national anthem when channels closedown for the night

  • I agree

  • bring back this ending
