  • Yeah just saw the Artist: Emmanuel Bex.

  • This is a beautiful little journey. Perfect music. Is it Keith Jarrett?

  • Awesome discovery !

  • perfect......

  • When I see these pictures I get so curious about the stories behind it. But there are too many to even know.

  • I wonder what went on in her head? Did she ever have a boyfriend or a significant other. She was very personal and employers said she never had not a phone call, or friend : (

95% of herlifes work, cameras, clothes, video tapes, audio recordings etc auctioned off for $400 + dollars cause she couldnt pay her locker fee. Thanks to Mr. Maloof the young guy who is championing her work. Imagine it all being lost.

My fav is the one w/ the girl in a white dress and the 57 Chevy in Miami.

  • Really great photography...isn't that Keith Jarret at the piano?

  • just love these

  • Absolutely love this slide show. An amazing photographer with a keen eye.

Now, tell us about the background music. Love that too.

  • she. was. a genius. period.

  • Wonderful ;O)

  • A remarkable trip back in time showing real people's lives. The photographs + perfectly appropriate music contributed to my poignant feeling. Despite the messages from Hollywood, TV, and advertisements, most people's lives are not glamorous.

  • WoW what an amazing artist! She should be recognized!

  • A life well-lived.

  • I just learned of all of this tonight on the CBS evening news. And it is all so very exciting. It is if some pulitzer prize winning photographer has been discovered. It is like time has been frozen and we are just now allowed to peer back in time. This is all so incredible and I want to thank the beautiful young man who is working to bring it all to us. God bless him.

  • This is THE most amazing thing ever. We are studying Vivian Maier at Birmingham City University in the UK, for our Photography as Research module for our MA program. What a talented woman, some really special pictures.

  • The work is wonderful. I am writing to urge you to develop her color work at the same pace, at least, at which you're developing her black and white pictures. I am sure it will be just as compelling, if not more revealing.

  • I, too, thank you for the enormous effort it must be taking to scan and catalog this collection. IT IS WORTH IT. Vivian Mayer was a gifted photographer with a remarkable eye, and her work should be shared.

  • garbage

  • I commend you on the effort undertaken here. As a longtime photojournalist who has studied all the masters, Ms. Maier's work is as compelling as any. I have no doubt when you complete your archiving, you will find her best photos to be easily comparable of Cartier-Bresson, Frank, Winogrand, Friedlander, Levitt, Lange, Eggleston, etc. Please do not despair as you log these long, seemingly endless hours, there will be generations of people who will appreciate what you are doing today. Thank you.

  • this is a huge discovery. she is as good as it gets.

  • I think the music's absolutely spot on. Thank you for using music that is so in character with her and her photos.

  • @plainforgiven I agree..sometimes I have to stop watching slideshows because the music really ruins the photos...but Vivian Maier..what a great photogapher and what a great story of how her work was found!

  • beautiful works, they are amazing! and whats up with the song? can you choose a better one?

  • :)

  • What a spectacular haul. Just stunning.

  • wow!

  • Love this work..can't get enough of it..what a truly talented women..a shame she passed away..god bless you Vivian!! And thank you to the man who found these!!

  • looks like she used instagram :P

but in all seriousness, this is interesting stuff.

  • Thanks, but very annoying music.

  • Not only do I love the photography, I love the music, too.

  • Not a brownie, a Rollieflex, 120mm medium format (great camera, but difficult to use: image appear reversed in the view and depth of field is not simple to achieve).

  • Truly amazing! I look forward to see a documentary on her work and the books of her photos that will flow from her lifetime of dedication to leaving a lasting record of America's urban culture. A truly perceptive human being who deserves all the attention that she will garner.

  • Vivian Maier: Magnificent photography and outstanding photographer.

Bravo to the young man who discovered this treasure trove and brought her remarkable work to the attention of the world.

He has cemented her legacy in photography and urban culture!

  • Goosebumps is all i can say. She had an amazing talent and what composition! What a wonderful find for the photography world! With a brownie too!

  • I sit here stunned and shaken. Thank You.

  • The photos are phenomenal..the music I could live without though :-)

  • What makes this work stand out is the broad tonal scale the artist pulled from the negative and then translated into the print. A rare combination of gift, skill and artistry.

  • I don't know much about photography but I k ow enough to say that these pictures are phenomenal.

  • Vivian Meier is wonderfully talented. She could be up there as one of the masters of street photography. Watching this slideshow of her work just gave me the goosebumps. Her photographs speaks volumes.

  • These pictures are unbelievable. Fully the equal of, if not superior to, Robert Frank or Diane Arbus - who are stars in this field.

I anticipate we're just at the start of Vivian Maier achieving the same level of fame as they, which she richly deserves. And she shot 100 times more photos that either of them!

To think this will all happen after her death, too.

  • Her photos are just phenomenal. I could have learned about composition and drama from Vivian Maier. I could look at her shots over and over again. Thank you for sharing the photos.

  • I sit here blown away by the perfection of the compositions, light settings, and captured moments.Who is this woman, and why did she die before being recognized as a premier street photobug? I would love to have heard her speak of her work. This lady and her collection ... are actual treasures.

  • The world is watching and waiting for more of Vivian Maier. Please keep on showing us what genius creates. And thank you!

  • Would love to see this without the moving background and silent (I can mute the sound, but that swirly background is still kind of a distraction).

    These images can stand alone!

  • I think Vivian Maier will emerge as one of the great photographers of the 20th century. This slide show is just a tiny scratch on her work!

  • art in life. life in art. a surprise in every image. wonderful.

  • Wonderful! I can't wait to see more!

  • What a shame the music was changed, "Central Park Blues" fitted far better with Maier's work than this boring tune. :(

  • What an eye! I can't believe how perfect the composition is in all of those shots!

  • I feel an immediate need to pick up my camera and go on a photo safari! Thank you!

  • @BeEarth i feel exactl the same way. going next week to the nearent big city...melbourne with my new camera and lenses and see if i can even get anything...of course i will never reach this standard but it is inspriing isn't it?

  • Thanks for this!

  • Love the music too. Vivian needs her work to be seen world wide and she will definitely get the accolades she deserves, even if it's after her death.

  • nice to see all these photos without spotting even one cell phone. A really good example to show how we have ruined our lives here in the world. any photo before 1974 looks romantic. Nobody makes great photos of people standing around yapping on cell phones with Nike outfits on! I wouldn't go as far as calling her an Amazing photographer though. Lots of very good photos... but not a Harry Callahan (chicago based too). I see her as more of a real good camera club photographer.

  • Every image is compelling and insightful - truly beautiful.

  • As great a photographer of Chicago as ever lived. It's not just one photo, but the body of work, in a similar style and vision, over a lifetime of shooting. It's simply superb work.

  • Simply amazing pictures.

  • Amazing... story and photos.

  • Awesome photos and great music.

  • Tempted to drive to the Chicago Cultural Center tomorrow for the opening of "Finding Vivian Maier: Chicago Street Photographer"

  • We have all heard the phrase "a picture tells a thousand stories", well here's a thousand and one. Thank you for bringing this to us, and can't wait to see more.

    Thank you Vivian.

  • All your life your hear stories of "hidden" or "overlooked genius." I know I have. Time and again. All of my life. And not one of those stories has ever been true...

    until now.

Thank you for posting this. I cannot wait for the book, and to see these amazing photographs in person.

  • Powerful. Love the music too.

  • Comment removed

  • Amazing photography and beautifully-done slide show. Thank you for this.

  • Love the music

  • Amazing Work...

    Blessings to Vivian

  • Quite a story. Quite a photographer. Gotta remember she was out shooting these on the street back when un-escorted women weren't even allowed in Chicago bars. Thanks for the nice slide show.
