Well, in the original fairy tale, he doesn't make a kid out of wood in the hopes he'll get a son. He buys a peice of wood which is for some reason magically enchanted, and when he makes it into a marrionet it comes to life on it's own.

In the book: He didn't mean to make a son, it just happened to be a magic block of wood which came alive when he carved a marionette.

The Disney Movie: He didn't count on it being a son, he just wished for it on a whimsical fancy, and the Fairy just happened to listen.

This movie: Yeah, it's kinda lame. Maybe he just wanted to test himself to see if Science could manage it?
