i got my nape pierced, with a 12g, and he put in a 14g 90 degree surface bar.

i really cant remember if he used a clamp or not because i was laying down on a massage/tattoo table. but im quite sure he freehanded it. my other surface piercings, my sternum and my collarbones, he used clamps for both.

i did mine myself, and holy shit did it take more than four seconds. i was in the mirror digging around trying to get it to come out right where i wanted it...that was something else. definitely have somebody else do it, unless you have a very high pain tolerance. not trying to sound like a badass or anything, but i thought it actually felt good. it made my whole body tingle.

I got mine done in HTC piercing in tempe, az. usually the nape is done free hand in order to go under all 7 layers of skin. if your piercer has sufficient training and experience, they probably will do it free hand. otherwise, better use clamps. it didnt hurt me at all, i felt it, but it didnt hurt. also, i do have a relatively high pain tolerance, plus, my piercer is very experienced and did it quick and cleanly.

Some prefer to free hand then use clamps

Also depends on where abouts on the body,

For instance, some people have skin easy to grab on the back of their necks whereas some dont.

so free hand would be the easiest option

hey, just thought id reply coz i got mine done yesterday (saturday 14th) and reli it didnt hurt much atall!!! and my one was a very very long piercing coz i got a big neck i spose ha

but make sure you get it pierced with p.t.fe (surgical plastic) it helps so so so much with the healing and it gives you perfectly normal rotation of the neck!!!

That thing is crooked as hell. If you are going to do a freehand piercing like this you should be marking your entrance and exit spot and make sure you're doing it straight. just a little helpful tip. not a trash talk.

I am a body piercer, I work in the shop that this was done at. Amber, who pierced me, has been piercing for, I believe it was, 9 years. She knows what she is doing. Just because it was done freehand, doesnt mean it is going to come out crooked. It was done freehand, because the surface bar she used, was my surface bar, it was my choice. It had very deep 90 degree angles, therefore she had to go deeper.

There was lots of room for swelling. I saw the piercing in person several times and it is now pretty much healed. And the alignment and placement is perfect for her neck. Thanks for your comment though. =]

Freehand on the neck, I wouldn't advise it. neck is liable to go crooked otherwise, ALl mine have been done with Clamps. also it looked as if she gave no room for swelling of it, that causeds some pain after? or at least some discomfort?
