Wow, an anime "clip show", where a good 50% of the graphic content is re-used from a previous episode(s) and a thin storyline used to link it all together into a stand-alone episode. In Hollywood this device is used to shorten the shooting schedule, give key cast members some time off, and save money; was the Japanese excuse the same with respect to the animators? More than one clip show every couple of seasons is considered cheating the audience.

@50zcarsman — this was just about the last episode of the series and was used to tie up several loose ends in the storyline. Though several episodes featured flashbacks, this was the only "clip" episode and it comes as the series is wrapping up.

@LordZontar Well Pops and him had it out years before. Pops said he was too young to be a professional driver. You know how it is you have big enough episode with the old boy and that's that. F---k me? No f---k you old man. I tried to score a quick left on my dad at age 15. He hit me in the head with an old style RC Cola bottle. It was one of the first time I was truly cold cocked. I thought the glass had went clear to my taste buds. Rex was a sucker to quit the game at the top of his game.

i think this is the more sophisticated idea that sometimes it's simply too late---too much has happened in the time since, too much "water under the bridge" as the cliche goes---for things ever to go back to the way they were

Pops Racer was probably a far better father to Speed because he realized how badly he has screwed up as a father for Rex

but boy, did he screw up with Rex!

i saw the movie for the first time and it was pretty bad-ass, so it got me brushing back up on my Mach Go! Go! Go! It sucks though i can't find any of the japanese episodes; i want to see the absolute original, though the series is surprisingly violent in english, there are still cuts to some of the dialogue which means cuts to the original story, and of course there are cuts in the movie, Rex getting plastic surgery?

No. there were other great shows around the time of Speed Racer's 1st apearence in America. We had the classic Bugs Bunny. There was also Fantastic Voyage, Mighty Mightor, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Rocket Robinhood, SPAAACE...GHOOOST!, The Herculoids(!!), & Johnny Quest. America had GREAT cartoons in the late 60s/early 70s! There was also the Britsh imports, Captain Scarlett & the Mysterons, Joe 90, F-B XL-5, and the Thunderbirds! S-R came with Gigantor, Marine-Boy & Astro-Boy. Great!
