When you think about it, this poem is talking about religion.
The walrus, being large could represent buddah, (or with his tusks Ganesha) and the carpenter is a reference to Jesus, being raised a carpenters son. What do the walrus and the carpenter do; they dope all thes oysters into following them where the proceed to eat them and it ends with the walrus feeling remorse at the fact that there were not mor oysters to eat.
