what do you do in your tank that you let the beetles come out of the skulls? do you put a extra piece of meet in there to attract them out of the skull? or do they come out on their own?
I've raised them. My bedding is wood chips (misted daily with water). The dermestid beetles love dog and cat kibble, white bread, lettuce, and fresh apples. protein is most important, but the other stuff they love with it. If you cook hamburger meat they will chomp on that too. They bore into wood to pupate, you could put a small piece of wood in the tank. For those of us who dont want to raise them on roadkill, feed them what I listed above.
hey there, im interested in growing a colony of beetles. would you mind sending me an email. i have a few questions before i get started. thanks. trapapoodle13@gmail.com
very helpful, thats awesome. i'd at least separate those eyes and brain. brain holds an intense amount of bacteria from what i understand, the beetles dont like anything that is festering.
@acr6463c I mix the chalk with the peroxide to make a paste and then spread it over the skull. You can wrap it in plastic wrap and place it in front of a heater and it will work even better(rotate every 15 minutes)
Super interesting, I'd love to read, or watch a full thing on the entire process, step by step, maybe a video series? Also, what's with the bars across your door at 3:47? It put's the lotion on its skin! :)
great vid im thinking about uesing beetles to clean my heads and got some good info from this once i find a used tank cheap and get every thing set up id be interested in buying some from you. whats the price and how many
Unfortanatly its a new species for me Dermestes Atar its also known as the black larder beetle.I'll treat it like my other larders i've raised.Man i've been getting a lot of congrats and such LOL!Nice to see ya again tony.
Very nice Tony. I've been wanting to start a colony but I'm waiting for warmer weather. There's quite a few places online to buy beetles. May I ask where you got yours or can you recommend a place? I'd like to get a colony going by the fall and I got plenty of friends and family that could contibute skulls including a few of my own sitting in the freezer right now.
Very informative, great video. I used to have those little beetles when Ii had crickets and then they spread to my roach bins. And then I stopped seeing them, don't know where they went.
Hey tony,I need some information i have my colony started but i'm having trouples with getting beetles. What should i do?Is it a lack of humidity?Or something else[Def not a food thing they are well fed with dog food]I don't clean skulls yet as mom won't let me :(
