Facebook profiles, by default, are only viewable by those you accept as friends. If you don't know who someone is, you don't accept them as your friend. Simple as that. As for employers looking at FB, they a) need to be registered, and b) need to add you as a friend - that is, if you've stuck with the default settings.
Thats a damn good point, highlighted the fact that I needed to change my security settings so that only my friends can see my profile, otherwise any freaks on my network could have seen my info and hence known about my life, a freaky thought. All good now though, I changed my security. This is how you do it, go to privacy at top of page when you log in then go to change profile settings. peace.
kids which fall for perverts are just idiots. 90% of the kid population arent idiots. if i meet someone online, i make sure they are a real person before ever meeting up with them, by asking around to see if anybody else has ever met them before, if not i just look at them on webcam, if they arent convincing enough, i wont meet up with them, and even if i do, i will go with a dozen mates.... kids arent as stupid as they think we are.

One of the worst claims was MSN saying that it was closing the chatrooms to save kids form perverts. So how come the day after I created a new hotmail ID/passport, I got five buddy requests from complete strangers. Also kids swap lists of email addresses/IDs in order to be the kid in their school with the most "friends". They have no idea who they are talking to.
People can only see your details on facebook if you add them as a friend or if they add you and you accept the request. So if some stranger starts talking to you, its your fault.

For extra safety, I use a separate email address but thats mostly down to my paranoia.
