@willbrown3232 MP is a progressive god. MM is a...well technical god...MP is better for DT...MM more creative than MP? come on, all MM drum parts feel more like an excersice and not a groove.
DT really should have let him back. I understand it was foolish for him to tire himself out touring with A7X, but he's been a part of that band for so long. Don't you think they could forgive him?
@jaipipor It's in sextuplets (or 16th notes triplets if you will) and it's four hits with hands (R L R L) followed by two hits with feet (R L) - which gives total of 6 (one sextuplet). Everything else is only orchestration - in this case first hand stroke on snare and other three on big toms. That's it.
As a drummer, I realize I could never, in a million years, play like this guy but, even if I could I would choose not to. To me it's very tacky, cheesy drumming... very skilled & disciplined but, so sterile.
@earache70 This is a studio recording from the album, that is supposed to be steriel. Go see LiquidTensionExperiment/Transatlantic live performances here on youtube, then you adjust your opinion.... :-)
Honestly, I'm still trying to accept Portnoy's departure from Dream Theater...We all know Mangini is one of the greatest rock drummers of all time, but Portnoy drumming style was something so special that you can't feel the same creativity and musicality listening to the new DT songs.
@YTDSoM funny I share the same opinion regarding Mike Portnoy's style and skills. Sure you can find another drummer but you will NEVER find another Mike Portnoy. It's like finding another Peart. Those guys are from that other planet. The one that produces masters of their craft regardless what they do. Damn, wish i was from there. lol
Love MP mangini will never be able to replace him i dunno but in ADToE i felt a lack o power in the drums, not to say mangini is not a better drummer is just that Portnoy was part of the DT sound Portnoy said so himself, it's like when Roger Waters left Pink Floyd, it's not the same sound sorry just my thoughts
@1691jabp I think that to a certain degree you're right, but when you watch live footage of DT with Mangini, the power is definitely there. It might just be how he tunes his drums and the way they sound on ADTOE that made it feel lacking. I had the same thought the first time I listened to the new record.
@DT2BLZ hahaha im just kidding man ;P chill! xD very nice videos you have, Mike Portnoy is the best! did you film this or what? or did you just copy those videos?
Everyone talks about how Mike playing is "so cliche", but they forget he wrote the cliche to begin with. Drummers have been copying Portnoy for the past 15-20 years now. He brought progressive drumming back from the grave and is the most influentual drummer since Peart. My opinion of course.
@leem6453 You are so right that I want to hug your mother for making you! I guess most people just dont know this much about the history of this man and his music.
@leem6453 MP is playing well, and I think they something in common with Peart - the people who do not play drums or even any instrument still like to listen their playing. Music is for people, not a competition of speed and accuracy even it can sound good when playing so... I can agree with You totaly... MP:s work and style has a also partly done the "movement" to take drummers behinfd the band to the front and "spotlight" -drummer is no more only a "rythm keeper"...
@leem6453 Portnoy didn't write the standard for prog drumming. That was Bruford, Bozzio, Colaiuta, and Peart. Those four were playing all of MP's licks before he even learned them. And modern prog has been taken much further than MP's capability, without copying one bit of his style. listen to Periphery, The Mars Volta, or Porcupine Tree.
@willbrown3232 I didn't mean he "wrote" the standard. Sure there were many great prog drummers that paved the way before Portnoy. My point was that he is arguably the one who re-ignited prog drumming and brought it back to the masses, and was highly influential to a new generation of drummers.
I wonder if the new DT will play any Portnoy tunes in their concerts. If so, which ones? They can play anything they want, but logic dictates they will play what they like to play. Did they realyy like playing all these 12 step songs? Just wondering.
All people have a right to express their opinion about Portnoy's playing without getting crap about it from other people. I love DT and portnoy, if someone doesn't,
@passion4drums Well, it's pretty genius to copy classic prog/rock drummers and make a fortune with it. He has some his "own" licks like at 2:10... seriously? He has played that exact fill a million times before... and the beat after that is an immediate reminder of lte's paradigm shift... then the horrible backing vocals... and that same fill again at 2:54, at 3:38 comes exact riff from this dying soul... 4:17 used fill.... 5:00 super-cliche fill... etc. He should be embarrased...
@aakkoin ahhahaha dude your soooo stupid!!! i think you should be "embarrased"... none of it is at all "cliche". IT'S NOT YOUR MUSIC. you wouldn't have the skill to write even blink 182 if you tried.
@aakkoin WHATEVER IF HE HAD PLAYED SAME FILL ''MILLION'' TIMES BEFORE??!! -.- It fit's perfectly, so what the fuck is the problem with that??? And the same riff from this dying soul, IT IS THE IDEA OF THE SONG!!! -.- Glass prison, this dying soul, root of all evil, repentance and this are same ''story'', so it is the idea of the song, like at the 9:28 comes the same riff from the root of all evil, it makes perfect sense. And YOU should be embarrased, accept the fact that you aren't any better.
@aakkoin ok dumbass i need to point out the extreme stupidity of your comment since you obviously don't realize that THIS SONG IS A MEDLEY of all the previous songs in the AA suite. So yes you do hear parts from dying soul and Glass Prison etc. And what makes you think he needs support for the double bass part? If you haven't realized, HE PLAYS IT LIVE dduuhhhh.
@rsyyjh4n6r7xtygb45bt I got that, but still, what a useless medley... No wonder they broke up, they haven't had real creativity for years. MP's playing is such a cliche... he's pretty open about the fact that he gets ideas straight from other bands. It sure sounds like he doesnt have much own to say with his instrument. So many voices talking so loud, but saying nothing... I bet he has (or had) his head up his ass cause everyone just praises him. My opinion of course...
@aakkoin bro dont be a cunt, next time you record 11 great albums with 4 of the worlds greatest musicians and tour with avenged sevenfold, then maybe you can say something
@TheNolanFest not this again... you mean I must like MP cause he has succeeded? piss off... public opinion is sadly fucked up many times. I'm not saying my opinion is 'correct', but you don't have to look far for more creative and all around more interesting and entertaining drumming/music, that has some feeling.. I know music is not a competition, but comparison is inevitable and even necessary. 25 years ago DT might have been innovative... but just forget it, I can't change your fanboy-mind...
@aakkoin o man youre really really right ! you sure showed me! calm the fuck down. pretty much everyone else watching this video doesnt wanna hear wat you have to say anyway, so save yourself the typing for another band you actually like. no one said you had to bow down to any one becuz they were succesful
@passion4drums The rhythm change at 6:00 he has played times and times in other songs, the both beats are as simple as possible... that does not mean he has "style", that just sucks, isn't this supposed to be prog? He sure hasn't made progress in years... for the fast double bass at 6:44 he needed support from another lame-ass, Jason Bittner. The rest of the song is the same old simple beats with same old super cliche-licks. no technicality, no style, no sound, not even speed... i don't get it.
@aakkoin well you obviously wouldn't get it. go back to slipknot and a7x if your all about what you call "speed" which in the end, if you know what music really is, doesn't fucking matter. this isn't about technicality, it's about music. and it's not YOUR music. make your own lame ass band if you want fast shitty 'music'. and "no sound"? what in the fuck does that mean? deal with it.
@passion4drums I know, this aint my music.. I don't care about speed as itself, but as a drummer music is kinda important to me. Anything really goes but I dig music that grooves and creates and experiments, genres don't matter.. but c'mon, with bands like opeth, mastodon, gojira and the ug shit.. thats like this prog metal thing.. dt has its own sound sure but it's been fucked for years. I know theyre trying to be dramatic but it's just weird. Pink Floyd is dramatic... sorry about the rant
@aakkoin i can agree to some point but still, dream theater is dream theater. you can pretty much leave it at that. they aren't "over using" certain parts for shit. they are doing it on purpose because this is the conclusion to the 12 step suite. they are just making references to past songs, and i think it's great. the first time i heard it, it got me excited because it was so unexpected. every band has it's changes, and that's to avoid the one hit wonder label...
@aakkoin Hey, if you don't like, why you just come here to annoy people who likes this? 99,9% people watching this video really loves Dream Theater, and if you don't like, don't be a troll and keep your opinions on your own head, don't come here annoy people. -.-
@1991ant1991 Portnoy hasn't come up with anything truly *NEW* as a drummer since SFAM at best... and you could argue that's all "Arrangement Drumming" like the "Shrink 'N Grow" section of "Fatal Tragedy", that physically drumming it goes back to "FII". He freely acknowledges that he doesn't practice off-tour, and that on-tour he only warms up and plays the show... thus no growth as a player. MP has been eclipsed by Donati, Minnemann, Harrison and others who *play* their instrument.
@scarred2112 I respect your opinion, however I don't really think it is important whether he is practicing or not, since I what I really care about is DT's power and creativity, and his drumming and composing skills fit very well to that purpose. I'd rather have portnoy playing what he's been playing thant have some of those you mentioned, that even playing amazingly - technically speaking - don't satisfy me as mike, as a member and composer of such a great band as DT.
@scarred2112 thats true but there really isnt anytime for him to practice off-tour because hes always busy with his side projects and he's always helping other bands if they need him thats why before he got kicked out he asked the band to take a break(hiatus) and they told him that they didnt want to so he left
Indeed, he didn't practice much, but half of the drummers here couldn't play his fills or be so influential/successful as he was/is. Just stating the obvious.
@1991ant1991 well.. considering that he didn't make the drums for nightmare, he simply played them, that would mean that the rev took his drum beat.. so.. good attempt at insulting a phenomenal drummer, but you failed completely.. just going to point out the obvious
@imkingofmymind he added that bell pattern (which is the same here) to the rev's track, he said it in interviews and if that's not evident enough listen to the nightmare demo. you're either a youtube troll trying to start off an argument or just plain dumb if you think i'm insulting portnoy who is one my favourite drummers, either way YOU failed completely.
@willbrown3232 MP is a progressive god. MM is a...well technical god...MP is better for DT...MM more creative than MP? come on, all MM drum parts feel more like an excersice and not a groove.

@0124fatemar This was before ''Nightmare'', so i would say that nightmare's chorus is ''The Shattered Fortress'' ;)
MCAmaZ 1 year ago
@MCAmaZ I hope it was coincidence that it happened to be the same bell pattern in Nightmare not laziness to come up with anything.
1991ant1991 1 year ago
@1991ant1991 Portnoy hasn't come up with anything truly *NEW* as a drummer since SFAM at best... and you could argue that's all "Arrangement Drumming" like the "Shrink 'N Grow" section of "Fatal Tragedy", that physically drumming it goes back to "FII". He freely acknowledges that he doesn't practice off-tour, and that on-tour he only warms up and plays the show... thus no growth as a player. MP has been eclipsed by Donati, Minnemann, Harrison and others who *play* their instrument.
scarred2112 1 year ago
@scarred2112 I respect your opinion, however I don't really think it is important whether he is practicing or not, since I what I really care about is DT's power and creativity, and his drumming and composing skills fit very well to that purpose. I'd rather have portnoy playing what he's been playing thant have some of those you mentioned, that even playing amazingly - technically speaking - don't satisfy me as mike, as a member and composer of such a great band as DT.

@ohrebuceteio i couldnt have say it better. :')...i think the same as you
DT2BLZ 11 months ago
@scarred2112 thats true but there really isnt anytime for him to practice off-tour because hes always busy with his side projects and he's always helping other bands if they need him thats why before he got kicked out he asked the band to take a break(hiatus) and they told him that they didnt want to so he left
arianafi 10 months ago
@scarred2112
Indeed, he didn't practice much, but half of the drummers here couldn't play his fills or be so influential/successful as he was/is. Just stating the obvious.
Norzeth 8 months ago
@1991ant1991 well.. considering that he didn't make the drums for nightmare, he simply played them, that would mean that the rev took his drum beat.. so.. good attempt at insulting a phenomenal drummer, but you failed completely.. just going to point out the obvious
imkingofmymind 11 months ago
@imkingofmymind he added that bell pattern (which is the same here) to the rev's track, he said it in interviews and if that's not evident enough listen to the nightmare demo. you're either a youtube troll trying to start off an argument or just plain dumb if you think i'm insulting portnoy who is one my favourite drummers, either way YOU failed completely.
1991ant1991 11 months ago
@0124fatemar hahaha naw, he did say in an interview that during the recording of nightmare that he used his own cymbal work in some songs

@DT2BLZ Take the video from here. Replace the existing audio with your audio and its done. Only good synchronising and it's like it's real.
PetropoulosGeorge 10 months ago
@DT2BLZ why not just sync the drum track with this video?
