Just watched the tutorial. Great video. Question which file format is best for the external hard drive to be set up in? Mac OS extended journaled, fat32, or NTFS, or something else? I am about to do this myself.
Great tutorial bro! Hey quick question... Do you have a tutorial about how to make videos like this one? where you record your screen and also your webcam shows your face at the same time?
Great video!!! I wish I would have seen this before I started my transfer to an external drive. I was able to do this on my own by going to the apple support site, but it was a pain in the ass, as I have tones of music I use for dj'ing and felt nervous about deleting my library after the transfer. This Video Stve put up is exactly what one should be doing!!! No if, whens,or buts about it!!! That's how videos should be on youtube. Most people rush, don't speak clearly, skip steps.etc. Great Job!!
Hi Steve. I was following along with your video just fine until I got to the part where we were to "choose" the library. I have a pc so I held the shift button while opening itunes and clicked on the choose library. as i was trying to figure out what to choose (little different than the mac) i accidently double clicked and that was it...I have no idea what I chose and now can't hold the shift key and try to open iTunes. I can't open iTunes at all. Can you help me? please?
Steve, Name is Todd from Philly. Thanks for all the great tutorials you put up they are very good. I have a question about this one. What should staff be and then everyone? Let me know if you can. Thanks
Hey Steve, Im a big fan of your tutorials i used yours to upgrade my internal HD in my macbook. i have one question though how would i copy the items from this external drive to a new computer. I am a DJ, I have 160GB of music (totaling in around the 20 grand category) so as you can tell my music is my way of life. I still want to keep all the music on my old macbook but i need the library on my new one also. If you could PM or respond to me on how to do that i would appreciate it GREATLY!Thanks

Steve if I got my iTunes library on an external HDD like yours and then If i get another external for Time Machine will it save my music on Time Machine if anything ever happens to my iTunes library on my iTunes external? Can I retrieve it?
Thanks, I saw another video like this but they left out key points so I ended up losing everything, thank God I had my music backed up. Thanks for telling everything we need to do. You're a blessing!
is this tutorial the same for a pc - Windows XP, obvously the folders n' stuff will be different etc...but the same type of things - drag iTunes folder to external drive, make iTunes choose library on external drive, make sure iTunes library media folder location is in external drive, and that you have all music/apps/videos etc...
then delete the "old" iTunes media folder,
and run iTunes off external drive and everything should be ok
please respond as i am a little nervous about "iTunes moving"
ok guys i just got my new 27"iMac , and im trying to copy some of my documents and pics from my desktop to the back up drive, drag and drop isn't doing any good, any help is greatly appreciated

Hey Stevesmacfix, great vid, question.. I have 2 iTunes libraries and I want put one to external HD and the other keep on my computer, what happened if I use Time Machine? there will be no problems?
I've been wanting do do this for eeeeeeeeeeeeever even went to the apple store and they couldn't help me.... they were pretty lost they were like yeah do this wait no... go to itunes etc and made no sense... glad ur back... thnx... Ur the ish!!!! lol

Hey man great to see you back. I just recently got a new macbook pro and im trying to transfer my entire itunes library to an external hard drive so i can move it over from the new to old, and ideas?
what about if i want to take my music with me to a friend's house and listen my library there (let's say we have a party or something)?? can i open my library from my external HD in his/her iTunes??
does it work with PCs too? (not all my friends have a Mac, you know xD)
@SpartanHamster Yes, I haven't tried this but it should be possible. What you would do is uncheck the option to copy media files to the itunes library folder when importing--allowing you to have some music on an external HD, some on the internal (or another external). Just make sure to import the files from wherever you will be keeping those music files permanently, because if you move the files you will get the exclamation icon (itunes cannot find the files).
@SpartanHamster Actually, if you are planning on having it by default using the library on the external HD but sometimes you don't have it plugged in, iTunes will revert by default to the media folder location on the internal drive. Then, you can just have some duplicates of your favorite albums that will still be playable without the external drive. Then when you plug in the external, restart itunes and it will detect the correct library to use. tinyurl (dot) com/a3dke (read the last section)
1 question: I used my old macbook pro as server, it works! but I wan't to put my whole iTunes library on my server and host it on the internet! BUT with a iTunes stylish GUI script. I used to use a flash template and upload the songs on, but that didn't go well for 4000 songs.. :/ I need like a script that takes the Library and move the songs on the right place.
This was one of the first things I ever did on my mac... I followed this other video that jacked me up lol... too bad I didnt know of stevesmacfix then!
Glad your back steve upload all that great content

@SpartanHamster Actually, if you are planning on having it by default using the library on the external HD but sometimes you don't have it plugged in, iTunes will revert by default to the media folder location on the internal drive. Then, you can just have some duplicates of your favorite albums that will still be playable without the external drive. Then when you plug in the external, restart itunes and it will detect the correct library to use. tinyurl (dot) com/a3dke (read the last section)

Thanks for this awesome tut!
