it looks more like an invention based on their research, rather than one used for behavioral study. the sofa does move by itself, not the people moving them - you can't study that, they built it that way.

This makes absolutely no sense why would you wast the time and effort tu build a thing like this when you can just have two separate seats. It just seems like a useless product.Second of all what if the people are traveling together?. Dumb.

That would:
a) spoil the idea
b) would go against what people want: their own space. now, by moving them apart they have a common event which they are willing to share. by giving them what they want, they want the opposite.
