Ah... Great memories. Gene Shay started the folk show every Sunday in Philly in the 60' and 70's. i've also been playing it myself since then. Mine has drifted just a little further away from the original, and I love how you have caught some of Van Ronk's nuances. I'd love it if you'd check out my version at coachdoc49.
That "50's LG2 looks EXACTLY like my late 60's B45; same body, bridge, pickguard, primitive plastic keys that still somehow hold tune, looks like same tobacco 'burst finish; great tone and great playing; please keep posting, although you make it look way too easy!
The LG-2 was superceeded by the B-45 I think. The B series had those clunky 'adjustable' bridges which, in typical Gibson style were supposed to be an improvement, but were anything but. Still a lovely guitar though compared to some modern s**t out there.
Gene Shay opened his Sunday night folk show for years and years with that song in Philly. I used to listen to his show, then Jean Sheppards aural stories out of New York every Sunday night throughout high school. Wonderful rendition. Now I gotta go and tube mine as well. Geez.
Nice work! I was searching YT in hopes of finding DVR's rendition of this song and found Arlo Guthrie's version instead. Played it and thought he performed it too fast. Then found yours and liked it MUCH better...then played a few more of yours and liked all of them. Very nice work. I do some of the same songs in much the same style but not as cleanly or as interestingly as you do. You have my admiration.
Tell me a little about your Gibson please. . . model, year, etc.. The tone is perfect. I'll take a parlor sized instrument over an archtop any day....and I love archtops!
I must have been a teen-ager when I first heard DVR's rendition of St. Louis Tickle (I'm 62 now). It stuck. Since then, I've been replaying it in my head. Barry Kornfield played a similar rendition, which I also loved. Last year I gave it a try, in a piano rendition. It is only today that I've heard your performance here on YT. It is so close in spirit to DVR's - how wonderful to hear! Thank you for posting this faithful and excellent performance.
well done. at 62 i'm rediscovering dvr and ramblin jack and others. i used to see both of them at the gaslight in the village in the early-mid 60's. you do the man proud.
A faithfull rendition of the great Dave Van Ronk version - so coveted by so many and played so well here! I do this song the style of Stefan Grossman - this song does what it says - tickles me like no other!!
I play the same stuff too. I also have that same exact guitar I'm unsure of the year but its a gibson I think its late 50's early 60's do you know the year?
hey man i play the same stuff and would be interested to corrospond and get some ideas from u if possible im trying to gear up for some local fingerstyle competitions and ultimately winfield.
I must say that you are TRULY authentic to the styles you play. Both sound wise and playing wise. I've been rolling through modern recordings and videos and thought that sound was lost... It's charm comes from the past along with your guitars.
OMG, this is excellent.

Wonderful rendition. I, myself, learned this song from a Happy Traum book published in '66. Learned it via tabs in a different key. A fun song.

From the Jug Band Stomper's album. I have my old scratched LP. Love it, and rare. Can't find it on CD. Grew up with this LP and Spike Jones.

That's really marvellous ,it sounds great. I first started playing after hearing Ralph McTell play this tune and it's one of my favourites.
All the best and Merry Christmas.

Very very nice - although I prefer the Rev. Gary Davis' more frenetic version.

It´s a Gibson LG 3 ?

This is a Gibson LG-2 from the late 1950s, if I recall. The guitar does not belong to me and I no longer have it at hand.

Thanks. Guitars are from friends, students or local shops and are with me long enough to make just a recording or two.
