Please don't put a parking garage in its place. Build a nice park with a baseball diamond in the exact spot where the one at Tiger Stadium was. The park could be a memorial for Detroit sports in general. Make the diamond a bit extra special as well by having some structuring to replicate the architecture of the older ballparks. then charity games can be held there, maybe those games where they wear the old unis and play by the older rules. Much better than building cookie cutter condos!
F**k all you burb people.Come live in Detroit,Save the ballpark, spend your tax dollars.Try saving the 100+ year old homes that sit and rot,if you want history.
@mattallica464 It would be nice to keep some of the older buildings intact, even if it's partial, it could still create a nice aesthetic appeal. Like how Ford Field incorporated the Hudson's warehouse. I'd rather spend my tax money on that than having them demolish it completely and build some crummy cookie cutter condominiums. The architecture in Detroit is one of a kind and it could be repurposed to create value in what is being newly built around it.
i lived in detroit i took my sons to the ballpark . it nneded to be a part saved for at least the history of the game. old time players played in that park . that alone should have been enough for the league to at least instead on at least a marker . i hope they dont put a parkinglot or a nail salon in its place. it deserves at least a statue or a marker. cobb, babe, and a lot more played in that stadium.
Half you clowns talking about being trilled that they tore it down don't know shit about history nor give a damn about it. Monuments to a historical event(s) keep those memories alive. Hell the only place Detroit has ever won a World Series is gone along with a century of history. It's even worse when there is plenty of other crap that need torn down and cleaned up in Detroit. Perhaps the remains of all of those burn down house found in the "ghetto neighboorhood's" That might help??
Thank God that these people didnt come up with the money. Bulldoze this eyesore. The 'Save Tiger Stadium' club needed to come up with $200,000 by July 1st. Guess how much money they raised.....$421. Gee, I guess I'm not the only one who doesnt give a shit about this rat hotel.
How could this have been used as a 'revenue source'? Its a huge eyesore. Maybe your one of the same goofs that wanna save another huge pile of junk, the train station. The sooner Tiger Stadium gets bulldozed, the better.
this place was a waste of prime real estate and we should be happy its gone, it gives way to something new and the best thing is theres no big ugly abandoned stadium just sitting with tress growing out of it LOL. But hopefuly they don't tear down michigan central station or lee plaza tower.
Prime real estate? Funny how the area around the stadium is nothing, yet nothing new is built there. So we tear down history to build something on historic grounds?
EXACTLY!! you know what they say "out with the old in with the new" i think our city should start living by that phrase. besides in a couple of years the real estate and development industry will be booming here because of such a surplus of raw land, builings, and sites. especially downtown.
Tiger Stadium may not have been in the cleanest part of Detroit, but it was still historic and you cant replace history and no it wasnt abandoned, you ever been to Detroit before??LOL, i bet not!!
um i live in downtown detroit and the stadium site is right up michigan ave. well i would have felt different if who ever the owners were beautified it and kept it up. same with any other place downtown.
good tear down the god damn thing, its just sitting there doing nothing. people say it could have been used but after a certain period of time a building is just sitting abandoned you have to do something, i mean it was just sitting there. did u all want to wait another 15 years for someone to finally come up with a plan for it, i don't. I believe in cases like this "Out with the old in with the new". now that its gone hopefully we can put something there, a mall rivaling chicagos watertower?
SO many great memories of Tiger Stadium. The greatest of which was being at the Championship game of the '84 World Series. One of the high points of my life. Also when a $20 bill floated down into my lap at a Tigers/Royals game in '89. AND being allowed to watch the '68 World Series during school. RIP, old friend.
I remember them wheeling a TV into our classroom so we could watch the Series. Went to Cooke on the westside. It was a weekday day game. Dont see those any more.
i've seen many games there - and it's sad to see the old place go, but the new stadium is awesome and that part of downtown is in great shape since the superbowl. you can actually go there and walk around - AT NIGHT! the old ball park was in a crappy part of town with no parking. it needed to go - take that money and put it into growing from the center out, redo Cobo and bail out the casino.
Detroit is a great old city with a lot to offer. The critics have obviously never spent any time there. One of the best sports towns in the U.S. Henry Ford Institute, Greenfield Village and casinos. Great independently owned cafes, bars and restaurants not overshadowed by the chain and franchises that clutter most U.S. cities. Corktown definitely has promise. I run the Detroit-Windsor Marathon every year and I'm impressed with the support the runners get from the community.
Yes, I have spent time there. I was in the USCG stationed in Detroit for 7 years. I have seen first hand all that Detroit has to offer. Abandoned buildings, potholes the size of Texas, a Mayor who belongs in prison, cop killers roaming the streets. Crooked cops, etc. Should I continue? Keep your eye on the ball, Detroit. Old buildings like Tiger Stadium require MONEY. Lots of it. Who's gonna pay that bill???? Get the crime under control, then think about tourists.
This stadium could have been preserved and used for tour groups, home run derby contests and old timers events. The chamber of commerce types combined with politicians only care about seat licenses, tax abatement for fat cats and it means lining the pockets of Detroit politicians who will get free tickets in the new sterile colorless stadium.
Who fucking cares? I mean Jesus, just take a look around Detroit. The whole town is a dump. It's a shame no one could have tied up Kwame before the demolition began.
That is a damn shame! Tiger Stadium could have been a cornerstone of development for the Corktown neighborhood. More evidence that the mayors office and city council are criminally incompetent!
In case you havent noticed, Corktown has turned into a shithole. Your probably just another suburb rat who only came downtown when you needed to. So go back to Troy, or Canton. Quit crying over this big eyesore.
I truly hate with all my heart to see things like this happen. Not being from the area myself, I'm guessing its money-motivated destruction here? My heart goes out to all of you. Keep your warm, lovely memories safe in your hearts at least, and do what you can to pass them down, keeping it alive. What a shame, what a sad sad waste. A part of me feels sorry even for the Youth who will never understand the history in Landmarks like this. God Bless *hugs*
This is a god damn shame and a disgrace! That money grubbing asshole Illich is a weasle and a dirtbag. Tearing down Tiger Stadium is a crime. I was planning to have my ashes poured on the infield, but now they will be spread on the beach in my hometown in Florida. Screw those responcible for this outrage!
shut up fag! dude its more than just a ball park and if you were any kind of tiger fan you'd understand why people are pissed about this. what if someone tore down the house you grew up in? this is bullshit...all i'm going to say.
My grandpa was a ballboy at Tiger Stadium for the visiting teams way back when they couldn't afford to travel with the team, he had some great stories of playing cards with Babe Ruth and the likes in the clubhouse, my last game there was in 84', what a great place to watch a baseball game, the new parks will NEVER carry the same atmosphere, nothing is sacred anymore when it comes to the bottom line what a shame....
It's sad to see Tiger Stadium go,but if no effort was spared for it's upkeep then it would have turned into the other buildings in Detroit.I don't agree with it coming down, but it would be better than seeing it decay.Plus with the economy we're in right now,who would flip the bill or want to flip the bill for the presevation? The people of Michigan can't afford to put money there, when it's needed elsewhere.
I've never been to this stadium, but driving by it or catching it years ago on news channels. It is so sad when someone like that man who seen it all is torn by demolition over this place. It's just sad. I think a lot could have been done to prevent this from happening. I feel sad for the fans.

All those memories! My first game as a kid went to extra innings and I can never forget it. Watched a lot of moments and characters I'll never forget. Mark 'the bird', Gibby, Darrell Evans, Cecil, even Rob Deer. The list is to long. Our memories too short. Hold on to them, they are all that is left.

I've been to Tiger Stadium countless times, too, but for it to just sit there with no income or revenue is just a waste of prime real estate.
Tiger Stadium IS an emotional building but to blame it on the Ilitches who've already done so much more is just retarded business sense.
