how does a band so talented, so sincere get so over looked so often? Rothery is a God... Still the Fish era was awesome. Glad we have both ears to listen to.
"Why did you hurt the very ones you should have protected?" honest lyrics, even better music. Unfortunately I don't know of more than about 10 percent of their music with "H" that comes close to this one, but this IS a great song as good as any they have done!

They're all great, fantastic, Kelly, Trewavas, Mosley, Rothery... but H rules. Brave's their masterpiece and one the best albums ever made, as rich as PF Dark Side of the Moon. Marillion forever!
well said - i was always a marillion fan, but with fish, this is magnificent - marillion have moved on and i love it and the comparison with floyd is justified - i am a huge floyd fan
I remember Marillion performing "The Great Escape" in Krakow in February this year. This was one of the highlights of that concert ;) And the album this song comes from is simply stunning!
i can't believe we are still talking about fish..u do realise that in the 30 years of the bands existance H was there for 21 years while fish was for 9..guys cmon..90% of their music is with H in it..
@JestersTear1 ye it does..it tells me that some marillion fans should start giving credit to H..u love marillion because of Fish or because u love the band?
@loufador My favourite era is Fish although I like a lot of H stuff (this is probably my favourite H song). My comment was not meant to be inflammatory - it just illustrates the fact that Fish was a huge part of the band's success and that is whjy he is stiil talked about.
Yeah men you´re right ;) this guy it´s great! but i like much more the classic stile i don´t know what but Marillion with Hogart sounds me so modern jeje but it´s great too!

Quote: "Hello? This is 2008 calling ... Fish has left the building. Its been 20 years now, see a therapist or something, but please just get over it!"
Well said. I wonder if these H haters poke pins in Ian Mosley voodoo dolls because Mick Pointer isn't still in the band. It's not like Fish was replaced by a member of the Backstreet Boys or something.
I just love this song, almost makes me cry. It's amazing how it changes from an euphoric moment to a great sadness when he plays the piano. A jewel...
Debate is never an insult when the arguments are informed and educated, what do you expect when the charismatic frontman of a popular band leaves and someone else takes on the mantle ? shall we talk about the weather ?
OK, Mr Informed & Educated. So a charismatic frontman left a band of five members 20 years ago, leaving the other four intact. Was the answer to change names? By your reckoning Pink Floyd would never have survived without Syd Barrett. The Conservative party would never have survived without Margaret Thatcher, America would never have survived without Abraham Lincoln. Think again, genius. H is certainly different to Fish, as all Marillioners agree, but better? That's just outdated opinion.
Please please stop all this complete dross about whether Fish is better or worse than Hogarth. Its just ridiculous. As a fan since the beginning I also remember the immense stage presence and excitement of those early days. These days the band is hitting new highs in musical performance and Hogarth is bringing his own musical talents and great lyric and voice. This debate is an insult to the great talents of the other band members who continue to produce such excellent music. Bring on N0 15
I think their biggest mistake was to carry on calling themselves Marillion , this more than anything has fuelled the whos better debate when the two music styles are very different, for my two pence worth the original is still the best... by far
The culminating song in a masterpiece. If comparisons of Hogarth v. Fish are in any way valid, let it be noted that Hogarth sang on and helped create Marillion's finest moment. They carry on, not resting on their laurels... nor supporting themselves with the foundation of a distant memory. For all progressive rock giants, this example has yet to be realized. Long may they exist on their own terms, with their own merit, and with an amazing body of work to delight us with.

Yes some might say that Steve is a better vocalist than Fish but he will NEVER have the charisma or stage presence that fish commanded . Gokce you say that fish with marillion was "cheesy prog" well i will give you that on the misplaced childhood album but Hogarth and co can only dream of repeating the brilliance of the script and fugazi albums
Fish and Hogarth have polar-opposite voices and deliveries. Fish's "angry" sound isn't anger; it's passion. While I still appreciate post-Fish Marillion, I regret to say that I find Hogarth's voice to be a bit whiny. It often sounds as if he's singer over or under the music; Fish was "one" with it. (Sorry if that sounds a little touchy-feely.)
okay marillion are marillion wiv fish or wivout marillion are great wiv H, becuse there not going to keep there 80's style it wouldent work with 21st century and to be fair i think they have done brilliant with H and he can do french really well!! And plus the fact Fish had his own style marillion wanted something diffrent in the first place!
...not better but another band...that´s an easy solution for this "dilema"...change the band name and go ahead...freely to another music style...don´t maculate the glorious past...forget the old name...forget the old fans... live us to "rest in peace" with our memories!!!
Please, can we stop referring to that pathetic old Scotman as Marillion? The band had to drop him because he no longer fitted the direction they wished to follow. Fish was a great Peter Gabriel impressionist, nothing more. Does that sound harsh enough? Actually I loved Fish as much as I love Hogarth, but I love Marillion more than either. Forgive me, therefore, if I find your argument weak.
More than harsh enough, I'd say. Calling Fish a "pathetic old Scotsman" is not only inaccurate, but uncalled for. I'd bet that what he's done with his life exceeds what you've done with yours by a factor of about 10.
Further, the band didn't drop him -- he left the band. And as I understand it, that's one of the reasons Mark Kelly was so mad at him for so long.
As for the "Gabriel impressionist" remark, that just displays your ignorance.
Now please go back and look at what I was responding to. Were my comments really borne out of ignorance or annoyance? In truth I adored Fish for what he did with Marillion at the time, but that time has gone. Over 20 years ago. Btw I also follow Mostly Autumn, so I do know a bit about Fish.
My life isn't even remotely comparable, so let's not go there unless you want me to bore you to death defining what the word 'exceeds' really means.
I wouldn't want to speculate where your comments were born out of since I don't know you. And of course I can't read your mind. All I had to go by was what you said, which I found a bit harsh.
You also seem to be contradictory in that you called Fish a "pathetic old Scotsman," then you say you adored him. People don't typically call someone they adore "pathetic." Besides, it's not like he's playing Vegas these days with a lounge band and singing "Kayleigh" every night.
Lastly, I hate to argue with a fellow Marillion fan, but I just thought your statements were hyperbole and needed to be challenged. Sometimes it takes an exchange like this for people to sort out what they really think and express it properly. No worries -- we can bat around differing opinions and still be amicable. :-)
Once again, Ken, fair enough. Sometimes the links on here don't work (as on this occasion) so I should explain better.
My annoyance, and therefore the context of my remarks, was aimed at a much earlier message referring to Marillion as 'pathetic' with H as singer. Hence the over the top response aimed solely at that comment. I wouldn't normally berate Fish like that, so I need to calm down a bit.
I certainly did not mean to offend other fans, so I apologise if I did.
Okay, I scrolled thru several previous pages of this thread and found the post you're referring to. Obviously that guy's comments were provocative and ignorant, and I guess I can understand your angry reaction. Sometimes I have to restrain myself from doing the same thing. It's not always easy.

as a huge marrilion fan this song had a profound affect on me. when i played this song for the first time it suddenly dawned on me marrilion were CRAP!

My childhood was an awesome rendez-vous with the Aylesburian. They let me believe in this world, 'cause their music ... "you couldn't understand" said Steve...
I saw Marillion at a small club in Pittsburgh in '95. People in the crowd were calling out for Grendel and Misplaced Childhood. But the band played almost all of BRAVE and it fuckin' rocked! Hogarth was mezmerizing by doing his subtle act - with ocassional twitches - ya know, just tellin' the story. BRAVE's as great a concept album as Pink Floyd ever did.
When you listen to the words as well as the music, you realise just how wonderfully well thought out this track is. The two are so beautifully inter-twined.
If I had to choose one song from Marillions great work, this would have to be it. Such great arrangement! And Stever Rothery shines on the guitar, while Steve Hogarth delivers a top performance on vocals. Of course it would be a close race with some of the Marbles like The Invisible Man, Ocean Cloud and Neverland.
Hogarth's presence on stage is awesome. The group is simply perfect performing.absolute precision and sound quality. They transmit emotion on every song and audience feel a quick connection .
the songs marillion produce produce are beautiful and steve hogarth is fantastic, i have followed marillion since they were formed in 1982 as silmarillion, and they just keep getting better!!!
Sublime. I have a tattoo saying "A bridge is not a high place. Icarus would know", Because I have "fallen from the Moon".
