Now that i've seen this, I think it wold be funny to mount an opener way in the back of the garage and make like a 10 foot arm to lift the door. That would be crazy.
It was installed like that because the top panel of the door would have hit the opener rail. That panel could have been notched out, and it would have been fine, but somebody was lazy....I agree it is a weird install, but kinda cool if you ask me...BTW I DID NOT install this.
I am surprised the door bracket did not rip out of the door, with how hard that thing starts up when the button is pressed. The arm is so long it is pulling back more than it is up.
The last year for the squared off style was 2001 that was also the last year of the 1280 style belt on the belt drives.

Actually if you watch closely, the top panel bows a little before the door actually starts to go up.
