What about the animal-like squawks on the intro? Sorry that ain't no voice. I'd swear he's playing with a wah especially since right at the end of the warble (before the rhythm guitar kicks in) you can hear him click off the wah.
If you went to see Montrose in the early 1970's,you saw 2 ramps on either side of the stage, like the ramps skateboarders use..Ronnie Montrose would run back and forth up the ramps..He was NEVER stationary..This album is Top 5 of my faveS..Get Yer Ya Yas Out, Wheels of Fire,Highway to Hell, Montrose,Lynard Skynard Live from the Road..All GREAT albums
absolute awesome album light years ahead of its time, rock candy, how immense is the drumming and the guitars that drop in space station # 5 at 0:43 seconds - PROPER ROCK N ROLL!!!
This was an incredibly influential and very underrated album. The first time I heard Van Halen's debut LP I said, "This sounds A LOT like `Montrose'";I didn't find out until much later that it was produced by the same guy (Ted Templeman) and that Eddie VH had specifically cited "Montrose" as a template.
I think that American hard rock from about 1975-1985 was a series of footnotes to the Montrose debut LP.
Hagar sang for Montrose early 70's. He's on the cover of the album with the songs "Bad motor Scooter" and "Rock the nation" Then he went solo and cut "Standing Hampton" including songs like "Heavy Metal". Then him and Neil Schon, Journey's lead guitarist started a band in the 80's. Can't remember the name. "Hammer"? Or just their names?
Hagar, Schon, Aaronson, Shrieve was the one band you are thinking about. The other one could possibly be Schon/Hammer that was Neal Schon and Jan Hammer and that also is a great album.
pitch control using is not possible.I only get it a littele bit to slow or to fast. Next uploads from vinyl i´ll resample with a special software. If i put in the length which is print on the cover, the software change it to.
No problem. You do the best you can do with what you have to work with. :-)
Rather than hassle with resampling & all that, I'd think it might be easier to just buy the CD and use that as the source. If it's still available, that is (I haven't checked). Just thinking out loud.
Ronnie´s comment for the intro: "After recording a backing acoustic guitar track, i put a microphone into my "Big Muff" distortion box, which went through a leslie speaker cabinet and then through tape delay in the control room. All sounds other than the acoustic guitar were my voice tracks processed through that setup, including the "synthesizer" sounds."
@taxirock I know this is late but i always wondered about the space beginning for this track? So the notes at the beginning over the acoustic are from his voice? Amazing cause me and a drummer used to fool with this tune and i would try to get the most spacey fat sound i could from effects, and it was cool but we needed the acoustic in the background to make it complete..It just wasn't as molten liquifying sounding, Right before the main riff starts"bird sounds"is just like ending on 6 was 9
good god almighty.....best song and group ever... I remember listening to this on the only FM station playing hard rock (the 70's, when FM was new) thanks for the flashback!!!
Can't count how many times we've seen Montrose in all his incarnations. This music is so relevant today! He's a prince of a guy, too. Signs autographs and replies to emails. :)
my friend got this from the library 25 years ago during high school. No one...including him..new anything about the album or their songs. Shortly thereafter the album was being lent all over the high school. We couldn't believe how good an album it was...and still is!

These Guys Rocked the Nation and rode the Baddest motorscooters on the planet!!!! Thank you Ron, Sammy and the rest, for the best rock of 1974, and going strong!!!
That's what i'm talkin about.Montrose's first album "Montrose" is one of about ten of the heaviest album's ever.Ronnie Montrose is proof that you don't have to play thousands of notes a minute to be good montrose proved it.

Is it me or is this version slightlt different? Sammy's vocals seem different on this vid or maybe I just was paying more attention to the guitar.

You´re right. The soundfile is from my old vinyl.
My turntable is sick...
In spite of pitch control!

Nothing wrong with the vocal pitch here, sounds the same as my vinyl and digital versions.Sound quality here, is a bit thin though.
Nice upload.

Back in the 80's there was this new band, and I could have sworn it was Sammy Hager singing.

The "Montrose" Album is rock guitar 101. Learn all those songs and you've got the best stuff down.
Where did Ronnie learn all these licks from? No tab books and DVDs back in '76! Respect!!!!!

No offense to the chap who posted this, but why is it sped up so much? Sammy sounds like a chipmunk! The pitch is way off.
There's another version of this on this site -- the one with the Montrose album cover -- that's at the correct speed.

The main reason you don't buy a CD is they suck an album sounds 10 times better.

Is he using a theremin for those sounds in the beginning? I always wondered about that.
