@sher5nong If you choose to do the rebound thing, then rember to do "snap" the stick back up again, so you will get to the "home/cradle" position again. I preffer to do it in another way, by using a snap to hit the second note.
@sher5nong A way to learn the second method, is to se the way Weckl does the single stroke roll fast in the Back to Basis vid. He is in the cradle position, but he is using his two fingers on the top to pus it down into the drum. Do that after the first note you played with the left hand, so when it bounces back, you will snap it with your top fingers. It will give you to even and solid hits. Hope it helps!!
If you dont understand this, buy Jojo Mayer DVD "Secret weapons for the modern drummer"!
Well, I've seen Jojo Mayer's DVD and there's no big difference. Weckl says (and he's right) that wrists are more involved in german grip than in french grip. But fingers, on the other hand, are "dominant" in french grip rather than in german. Both grips require both wrist and finger control, it's just that one "favores" wrist, and the other "favores" fingers. In the end, when you listen to it, there is a big difference in sound when you're playing.

he's teaching technique wrong..you can use fingers in both the french and the german grip.. Jojo mayer explains and shows how to use your fingers in both grips. I cant believe this guy would say only wrists when in german grip.. He's a great musician, but a shitty teacher..If anybody wants to learn the proper way. pick up Jojo Mayers dvd. its 3 hours long, and its just focused on the hands, wrists arms and body movement..
why does my traditional grip always want to go to a perpendicular angle from my hand rather than staying obtuse like its supposed to? How can I fix this?
Aye me too! I looked at these videos, watched what he was doing, tried doing it myself.. and it felt awfully familliar... oh! This is how I play normally! Whew! =D
I'm not so good with my left hand though, and I need to practise the triplet Moeller stroke.
so in german grip its not good to use the fingers?

A lot of people use the Moeller technique if they're playing quite fast paced music.
