What the electrician says is kind of correct, it all depends if the feeder cable between the main outside and the sub that he is looking at, is a 3 or 4 wire cable. Some cities have not adopted the current electric code that requires a 4 wire cable and still use a 3 wire feeder cable between the two panel boxes and still consider the sub, that he is looking at, as the main. He is correct if the feeder is a 4 wire (2 hot, neutral and equipment ground wire), he is wrong if a 3 wire cable.
excuse me, could you please tell me about the gauge (copper conductor size) system you guys in usa have, if possible could you show me a table, ie 6mm squared of copper conductor is a gauge 4 or something along those lines, also what do you have to do to become a electrician in usa, i was planning on staying in cali (any where warmer than the u.k,lol) for a year,so i would have to work part time, as i am not rich or anything thankyou
