Its stupid to say one thing is more important than another. Battle of Britain showed Hitler wasn't invicible, sure, but this was a minor loss. Stalingrad was a clear turning point, meaning where the tides of the conflict have been affected so drastically the position of who is winning is unable to change. The Battle of Stalingrad was obviously the clear turning point because it began germany's retreat. However, there's also the Battle of Midway which began Japanese retreat. Its all point of view
Normandy = Capitalism = Steven Spielberg = Commercial
Normandy wasnt key point of WW2. It was keypoint of Cold War. Germany was losing war when D-Day happening. Germany didnt care Western Front. Cuz USSR was greatest threat. Normandy happened. Cuz Brits and USA wants to save many lands from comminism.
Normandy isnt heroic. Normandy is Swarm attack to Dead Man.
Eastern Front is heroic. But they didnt have hollywood and steven spielberg.
I think that Stalingrad was the announcement that Hitler could not win all battles, but D-Day was to show the world that Hitler was going to loose the war.
Yes, thats true. The main reason why Germany lost the war was because Hitler didnt listen to his generals and he made a lot of mistakes thanks to that.
I think that if you look at the damage and delays caused by Allied bombing of Germany, you'll see that this act also helped turn the tide, even in Stalingrad, as German tank production, munitions, bearings etc were all seriously hampered.
Also without the Canadian Navy running the gauntlet in the N. Atlantic, the Russians would not have been able to sustain their losses in materials and food supplies.
I won't go into the effects of Stalins policies of killing his own people...
Since when does Russia like Stalin? he hated everyone, Russia was too scared to try and revolt because he KILLED TWENTY MILLION PEOPLE! He's a worse murderer than Hitler...

The United Kingdom was the 1 country Germany did not want to fight. Hitler said so himself that it would mean a great blow to the Nazi invasion if they had to fight Britain's Air Force and Navy
Did the Americans HAVE to come and help in WWII? No they did not, so 1 casualty from us is 1 to many. Think about what you're saying before you say anything 3dmaloy

@3dmaloy Heroism is not a nationality, heroes could be american, russians or any other nationality. The battles in USSR were very important, also the D Day in Normandy.
@michelleconte Look if not Russia we would all speak German right now.You see its Russians who pushed the Germans out of USSR's territories.Germany would destroy the world with USSR captured.
@skiwojima well d-day was the invasion of germany through france and the landing zone was normandy so people can think d-day was normandy and technically be right but it would be better to call it the opening of the second front for germany
@JosephRoy15 D-day was the landing and drop zones, D-day was just for one day, the battles though Normandy and Brittony until they got to Paris was all Operation Overload.
@michelleconte The greatest heroes of WW2 are no doubt the German u-boat crews, with only about 40.000 man, they sunk more than 15.000.000 tons of allied ships, under dangerous and cloustrofobic conditions. no greater heroes can be found i think, may they all live happy in Walhalla!
@TheYamR6Sp It's not a contest of heroism! No doubt that the the German u-boat crews were couragous men. It's time to turn the WWII page and pray for so many victims. Now Germany is a powerfull member of the UE and a precious ally for the free world.
@TheYamR6Sp so sinking unarmed merchantships manned by civilians is a heroic act? Then you'll have to count the men responsible for the autrocities comitted towards the civilian population in WW2 as heroes too. There is no honour in killing civilians who are trying to make a living.
@TheYamR6Sp You do realise U-Boat crew were cowards who used to mainly target merchant convoys? And kill civililans, How can you call them heroes? They were just as ruthless as the S.S. The true heroes of the war, were foot soldiers caught in the middle of war between few cowardly men! But maybe most of all were the Civilians who payed the most cost during the war and after.
@martynrobin121 If the guys who dropped the bomb from Enola Gay are heroes, and the people for dropping bombs on Dresden and other major civillian cities are heroes, then THESE men are certainly heroes.
@michelleconte America could have saved a lot of soldiers they lost at d day they lost a lot of there men stupidly instead of disembarking somewere else were not most of the german heavy machin guns and bunkers were they decded to dismbark were the germans could make there strongest stand

@3dmaloy they are heroes in the sense that they kept more european countries from falling into the communist orbit after d-day. the communist led russians were almost as bad as the nazis overall. i mostly like to study the eastern front battles, and i agree that the russians bore the brunt of the fighting.hitler wouldve never have dared to invade soviet union if he knew their war production potential.
i get tired of hearing about d-day myself,it was important though.thx
@dickran2142battle 40,000 troops..R u mad??? Germany had 750,000 losses at Stalingrad alone and lost 4 and a half million troops dead in world war 2.Get your facts right before spitting it all over the internet. It just makes you look a total retard!!!!!
@3dmaloy actually there's no need to your sayings my friend. anyone who played call of duty ww2 series, they get your point. but please get some kindness, they're also heroes.
By the time of D-day, the Allies committed a force of nearly 3 million men: American,British,Canadian,Free French, against Hitler's so called invunerable Atlantic wall: His greatest blunder.
D-day was one of the biggest military operations in World War II and the biggest in history. it was the beginning of the end for Hitler and Nazi Germany.
It matters to Canadians, proud of our individuality, our contribution and our heritage. My father served his entire career in the Canadian Armed Forces and - having been around the world some - I know how highly regarded Canadians are around the world, in no small part because of our part in this war.
what is that flag for Juno beach. it looks kind of like the Ontario provincial flag. shouldn't it be the union jack, since Canada didn't adopt the maple leaf flag until about 20 years after d-day.
@kfrcandjelko Or we could of just left the extra troops from those countries and let Germany, Russia, Japan etc etc take over the planet....Yeah that would be fun.
Yes an American probably did make this, much like the airplane, the automobile, the lightbulb, the nuclear bomb, the television, telephone, the computer, the internet, this website.. Hey now that I think about it weve pretty much created everything important in the last 100 years!
justin..John Logie Baird was not an American (British), nuclear bomb? helped by other people from nationalities, computer? Alan Turing also not American, Telephone? now your going too far mate..Alexander Graham Bell from Helensburgh Scotland UK.
@justink8996 Ooops. the lightbulb was invented in England, (Edison made a stronger filament), the telephone was a joint venture by Bell and some Canadians, the television was Baird, a Scotsman, the atomic bomb, penicillin, insulin, (which has saved more lives than any other discovery), were all done by a German, a Brit, and a Canadian, respectively.
Please explore things before you utter them. You only prove the ignorance of Americans.
Stalingrad and D-day were both extremely significant events of the war. D-day could still have gone ahead without the Soviet victory at Stalingrad, but it would have been a lot tougher and might have failed, as the Germans would have fully concentrated on the west and would have had resources (oil, gas etc) from their new Russian province. This could even have led to a successful invasion of the UK. So actually, i think Stalingrad was marginally more important in the long run.
@ApproachWithCaution but you also have to remember sure stalingrad very significant on the german front but if the allies didnt put up another front in france the germans would have used the recources that they used on the wesern front to fight the russians and at first right after stalingrad the russians was barely winning and were pushing bck the axis slowely but as soon as the second front opened up it gave them some breathing room so i think D-day and stalingrad are equally as important.
@ApproachWithCaution Even with all there Resources,Supplies and help from Soviet Union the Axis Alliance was humiliated when they tried to invade Britain 1940, Research the battle of britain(The R.A.F humiliated the Luftwaffe 3-1). The Main battles of the war was Battle of Britain,EL Alamein,Moscow,Stalingrad,Kursk,Lenningrad,Prussia. D-Day wasnt even vital, In the East there was countless millions of Soviets and countless thousands T-34's going to Berlin, With nothing to stop them.
I am only asking this: what happened in the north, beyond Sword beach? Seems as if the Germans *could have* swept down on the British part of the invasion. No?
From my knowledge of WWII history that WAS the allies left flank for much of the war on the western front held their by Monty while the Americans wheeled to take Cherbourg.
Brave Soldier's holding onto critical road junction, and the Germans thinking that the Normandy Invasion was a diversion for the real invasion. I think that is why.
D-Day was a German blunder, all allied advances should have been destroyed. It was a very risky move by the western allies that paid off because of German mistakes.
D-Day was a masterfully planned operation that threw 8 divisions against German defenses. Omaha was a near thing, up until 2:00 when a US Navy destroyer moved close on shore and took out the fortifications using precision aimed fire from close range.
